Horses are beginning to sound good again - only if we could solve the exhaust problem.   ;D

You guys in America are lucky though. I filled up my car with petrol last week and i worked out the diffrence in price of petrol in the UK and the USA. Once i had converted the money, it worked out that i pay over $7 US a gallon  :(

Joey,

WOW!!!!, I had no idea gas was so high in the UK. I would forget about the exhaust problem and ride a horse.   :D  Is that the reason why bicycles are so popular in many countries? You would almost have to be rich to drive a car.

Love In Christ,

Bro Tom. A huge percentage of the petrol price over here is taken up by Tax. I'm not sure of the exact figure but i think it is something like 75% (figure taken from the BBC) of the price of a gallon is taken as Tax for the UK goverment and the oil companys get what is left.
A few years ago, Truckers and farmers, outraged by continuing price hikes in fuel staged blockades at the fuel depots around the country, resulting in the country grinding to a stand still as there was no fuel at the filling stations. I remember getting up one morning at 3am so that i would have a better chance of finding fuel. You literally had to queue up for an hour or so just to fill up your car with petrol.
Prices in the UK for fuel have this past week passed the price of two years ago, when the protests started so it will be intresting to see if protests happen again. I sure hope that isn't the case as it was worrying not knowing if you would be able to run a car.

 :o thats expensive!

Also keep in mind the size of the country. People in the UK don't commute 80+ miles to work either. I am sure that there is some factor there. Ya think people in the US would actually buy a hummer H2 getting 13 mies to the gallon if they had to pay $7 a gallon........

I would hope not ;D

My wife and I get about 24 in town and about 30 on the road with our Honda mini-van. We don't do a lot of traveling, but we can still barely afford gas. I don't know how normal people afford those gas hogs.

:D  My son has a friend with a Hummer who is lucky to get 7 miles to the gallon. I guess it's lucky that he's single and has no family to support. On top of everything else, it costs an arm and a leg to purchase a Hummer. I'm told that it rides like a Sherman tank, and I can't figure out why anyone would want one.

:D  If gas prices get to $7 a gallon here, my wife and I will be driving a 2-seater moped.

Brother Richard,

I think that we are all doing a lot of praying these days. When we think of such things, we can and should give thanks that we aren't walking.

I was just thinking that all Christians are rich in all of the things that make any difference, with or without any modern conveniences.

I remember kidding my wife several times about making life simple:

selling the house and car
getting a tent
forgetting about electricity, etc.
catching or raising our own food

My wife told me to write every now and then and let her know how I was doing.  ;D

Love In Christ,
Tom

Matthew 17:5  While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Brother Richard,

I've always wondered what it would be like to leave the rat race behind and live a simple life like the Amish. I know they work hard to survive, but I really don't think that hard work ever hurt anyone. If I remember correctly, they still do nearly everything the old-fashioned way, including home and barn raisings with neighbors and family. I guess the only expenses they would have is taxes and buying necessities they can't make or grow. It doesn't really sound all that bad.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Brother Richard,

My little pension check would work well then. I guess it's time to see if my wife will let me put one of those Amish work aprons on her.  ;D  I already know that I can handle the exhaust of that horse and buggy.

Just read this thread for the first time tonight.  Considering that the Amish don't pay taxes, etc. isn't this what the bible calls living in the world but not of the world?

Don't kid yourself. Good drinking water is going to become very expensive.  Our water infrastructure is very old and crumbling.  They need tax money to rebuild but nothing is being said about it, probably because they don't want us to panic.

Go buy yourself a diesel.  They can run on crisco oil! ;D  Don't know if it would be any cheaper than gasoline, though. ;D

Since last week we have been paying more for a litre of gas then for a standard loaf of white bread. You guys have nothing to complain about. I earn R 3500.00 a month and pay more then R5 for a litre (not a gallon) of the valuable fliud. I spend at least 1/4 of my salary on gas.

ForHisGlory -
You are absolutely right - we have nothing to complain about. Complaining seems to be a national passtime. Americans are spoiled that way.  Why, just the other night my steak was too done, and...
Oh - never mind.   ;D

Maybe that's another reason we have such high immigration - "cheap" fuel.  :D

Come on over, ForHisGlory,  We'll sell you a few liters...   ;D

Judgenot, I don't think it's an American thing. It is a global phenomanon. You see it every where these days. No function or party is a success if it does not have a good pessimist.

ForHisGlory,

Forgive me, but what is "R" 3500.00 and "R5"?  How does that equate with the American sum of $3,500.00.  Is it the same?
Also, I would like to ask how many gallons or litres you get per mile?  What kind of automobile?

I've heard that the European cars are much more gas efficient than those here in America.  I understand you're from South Africa, but was thinking the S.A. autos would be as gas efficient as the European ones.  Am I correct?  The cars here can get anywhere from 8 miles per gallon to 40 miles per gallon, I think.  I think some of the SUV's only get about 8 miles per gallon, but don't quote me on that because I'm not sure.  Maybe someone else here on the forum would be better that this than I am.

Grace and peace,
cris
