If you know anything about computers at all, I suggest building one yourself. That way you get exactly what you want and nothing you don't. If that's not an option, Dell usually has good deals and they let you decide what you want in it and what you don't. Hope you find what you're looking for!   :)

If you are unfamiliar with the inards of computers that would be a god way to learn.  I could help you build your own computer if you like.  I would even build it for you or with you if you live close enough. (shipping on a fully built system gets pricey).

I will also help you buy what you actually need based on your computing.  Dell sells cheap computers and that's what they are.  As soon as you try to get anything worth while it gets pricey.  I have beat them out and made money on a good quality system and for a $1000 you can build quite a machine.  The only thing I can't compete on is a monitor but I think everyone should make a trip to the local store and see what they like.  It's the biggest component of your system you interact with and can be kept from computer to computer.

I personally prefer HP over Dell but I also like AMD over Intel, and HP is the only large OEM that sells AMD systems.  Compaq is owned by HP so they are the same thing.

You let me know and I will direct you the best I can.  Start by telling me what you would actually like to do with your computer.
