Lets have some ideas.

Dogs are great for showing you love and affection!  Sometimes...too much affection...but that's ok.  They've got surgery's for that sorta thing.   :D

A dog is good for running and rolling around in the yard with kids. Ever seen a cat do that by choice?  :P

Dogs are great hunters:

Retrievers: Waterfowl
Pointers and Setters: Upland Birds
Afghan Hounds: Gazelle Hunting (seriously)
Dachsunds: Badger Hunting (I'm not joking)
Chow-Chows: Food (seriously . . . Chow? anyone?  :P)

Tis true.  In China, long ago, the Chow was bred for food.   That's why I keep tellin' my weiner dog that he's one step away from dinner... ;D

Actually, dachsunds were originally used for badger hunting. Their tubular shape was perfect for sliding down badger burrows and pulling out the contents.  8) :P

According to some sources, Chows are descendants of bears, and so it isn't quite the same as eating dog. You'd just be eating mostly-dog.

Who was the genius that decided to breed bears and dogs? Doesn't that sound like a plan that would end in a fat bear and one dead dog?

Well, actually my AKC book doesn't mention bear ancestry in Chow Chows. It also doesn't mention dachsunds going down badger burrows, but it does say that they were used for hunting badgers. In fact, dachsund is German for "badger dog".

There are some other interesting things about dogs. Basenjis don't bark. They only make a sound described as a mix between a chuckle and a yodel. They only make it when they're happy, the book says. Sort of like they're laughing.  :P

Also, borzois where originally used to "hunt" wolves in Russia. A bunch of hunters would go riding off on their horses with three borzois each. As soon as they found a wolf, the hunter would let his borzois go, and they'd go tearing off after it. After a long chase the borzois would manage to catch the wolf and pin it down. Then, according to the book, the hunter would come riding up, jump off his horse into the fray, and bind and gag the wolf. After a few minutes the hunter would untie the wolf and let it go. Now that's a sport for ya!

No, they don't bark...BUT they will make every other noise they can!!! Our neighbor bought one, thinking that a barkless dog is a quiet dog. Haha. They will make every other noise possible, all the time! lol

ha ha. Basenjis can also smell animals from up to 80 yards away. Superhunters!

My husband has my little one's Cocker Spaniel trained to 'herd' the chickens!  :-X

Cocker Spaniels are very strange little dogs.  :D :P

Oh yeah!  :-X Very strange! Guess that's why God gave them the 'cute factor'!  ;)

That's what I was referring to. They are very strange looking. VERY.  :P Long ears, long fur, that "I don't know what I'm doing" look,  :D. But hey, they're dogs. That's good enough for me!  8) ;D

My dog is good for taking off your socks.  Only good if he doesn't get carried away and try to rip off your toes along with it.

He isn't much good for protection.  Someone would come into our house and he would probably lick them to death.  Either that or hide under the bed.

He also loves to chase our cats.  Once he found a "pretty kitty" outside and stank for almost 4 months.

He is also good for making messes, be it shredding things, stealing from the garbage or digging up the backyard.

The only thing that he alarms us about is if someone is getting close to his personal space.  He will let out a warning howl while kicking out all fours and laying on his side on the floor.

He is also good for entertainment.  I love to see him jump for the cotton tree seeds and try to catch them.  Every once in a while you'll see him hack on one.

Yep, I have a genious for a dog.

The "kitty"...that's the Lab, right? Mighty hunter? And don't cotton tree seeds look a little like sheep - so that's him getting in touch with his collie side...chasing fluffy white things...

Acually, he's showing his retrieving side, probably.

Dogs make great Dishwashers when mom and dad aren't around to baby sit! (Personal experience speaking...) :P

Dogs also make great prayer companions and gift openers  ::)

I've experienced the first one, too! Nobody that visits our house knows that the dog has licked almost all the dishes at some point or another! ;D

My dog is my night night buddy,and laundery buddy.  If you yell laundery buddy or night night buddy he comes running to the spot that you are going to go.  He knows the difference.  Lately he thinks he's one of those little frew frew dogs.  He tries to climb and sit on my lap, he just doesn't believe that he is a 60 pound boarder collie.

Your dog does laundry?  ??? Goodness, I don't even do it often enough...

No he just gets in the way and rolls on the stinky socks.

I have two elderly dogs, one 13 and one 14. Their only jobs now are as lap warmers. As guard dogs, one retired 13 years ago and the other one retired 14 years ago.   ;D

They give unconditional love, and their little heads are soft and smooth from petting. They do perform one other valuable task, cleaning up left-overs after meals.   :D  AND, they do a great pre-wash on plates. The only problems they get involved in is whose lap they are going to sit in. There's a problem when both of them want to sit in the same lap.   :D  In terms of guard duty, we guard them.

Yeah, I've never actually petted one.  Had'm close the house though.  I open the back door.  Their tail automatically goes up; and they adopt this defensive posture.

they sure are funny to watch.  the cat just sits there and stares are him.  he sits there and stares back.  sort of indifferent to each other.

hehe.  the DOG is ANOTHER story.  hehe.  He comes back smelling like...GUESS WHAT.  PYUUUUUUWEEEEE.

Yes the pretty kitty was a skunk.  It took about 4 months for the smell to go away.  We are afraid to let him out at night.  You should have seen what happened when my dad went to the store to get tomato sauce.  He walked through the isles and past the water.  A lady got a manager and said that the water was bad or something because it smelled funny.

Pre-wash?  You mean you have to wash the plates after the dog cleans 'em off? Hmmmmmm, note to self...

Well, I guess if the plate was clean enough for the dogs to lick, it's clean enough without an additional washing.   ;D
