Title: What is blackeyedpeas
Post by: Brother Love on June 29, 2004, 05:18:53 AM
What are blackeyedpeas? Is it a christian rock group? Is it food? Is it something roman catholics eat on certain days of the year? Should Bible Believers eat them? Do you put blackeyedpeas in donuts?

What is blackeyedpeas?

A. Back in the days of the Wild West, Southern gentility, and Northern hostility, our celebrated blackeyed peas were used strictly for the feeding of cattle in the South. During the Civil War battle of Vicksburg, the town was under siege for over 40 days. No supplies went in and none came out The entire town was on the brink of starvation. So they ate those humble "cowpeas," thus starting a southern tradition. Nowadays blackeyes are eaten every New Year's Day to bring good luck for the coming year. All the way back to the days of the Pharaoh, blackeyed peas have been a symbol of luck and fortune. The superstition is that those who eat blackeyes, an inexpensive and modest food, show their humility and save themselves from the wrath of the heavens because of the vanity they might have. Blackeyed peas are neither a pea nor a bean. They are lentils.  ;D

Oklahoma Howdy to All,

Sincereheart gave the most accurate description of black-eyed peas.   ;D  I don't know anything about the music group.

Black-eyed peas are a very simple, but delicious, lentil that folks in the South really enjoy. Yes, they are also known as cow-peas. There are tons of popular dishes that contain black-eyed peas. However, one of the best meals has black-eyed peas as the main course.

Here's one of my favorites:

You slow cook some black-eyed peas with some bacon bits and a touch of jalapeno as the main dish. One must add fresh cornbread and buttermilk for a meal fit for a king. We are talking about:

Finger lickin', lip smackin' GOOD!

I would give more details about the cooking procedures, but I fear that Northerners might steal the recipe.   ;D

Love In Christ,
Tom

4 lbs ham - cured
1 lbs blackeyedpeas

Soak peas 8 hours.
Rinse.
Simmer peas on low 2 hours.
Chop ham into one-inch cubes.
Add ham to blackeyedpeas.
Season with everything you like.
Simmer until ham falls apart.
Eat a bowl.
Freeze the rest in individual serving size bags.
Eat everyday for the next 30 days.

On alternate days, add cornbread, jalapenos or whatever flies your kite.

At the end of 30 days, repeat recipe.

You will never starve - guaranteed!  ;D

Oklahoma Howdy to JudgeNot,

;D  Well, the price of black-eyed peas just went up. In fact, those Yankees might corner the market on them now.

Here's a little piece of trivia about black-eyed peas. They still grow wild in many parts of the South. They are very hardy and require almost nothing to grow. If you plant black-eyed peas on purpose in a tilled field and take care of them, you are almost sure to have a BUMPER CROP in the South. They don't thrive very well in colder climates, but there are some hybrid varieties now that can stand more cold.

Stop along the roads and take a look at what grows wild. I think that you will be surprised. However, it really shouldn't be that much of a surprise that God did provide nourishment for his creatures and man.

Love In Christ,
Tom

My husband is from MN and I am from SC.
When we first got married, he had never heard of black eyed peas.
When I told him what they were, he said he'd never touch them ever!
I made bep soup and told him he'd have to cook for himself or go hungry that night unless he ate the soup. I promised him that if he tried the soup and didn't like it, I'd never make it for him for supper again.
He tried the soup and didn't mind gobbling down his words as he gobbled down the second and third bowl full.  :P
Now he requests bep soup at least twice a year in the winter.  :)

;D  Those Yankees might be dangerous if they got a taste of Southern food, so don't give them any ideas.

I don't know what we would do if they ever found out about grits, fresh biscuits, and sausage gravy. They would probably drop their little English tea cups and crumpets.   ;D

What I don't understand though, is why they are served at just about every meal....they remind me of "Red River" cereal, or "Cream of Wheat" (disgusting stuff, that - it's the next best thing to cement if you let it sit long enough).

How about a Froferbridie?
My family participated in an 18th-century festival last month...we worked in the food booth, and one of the items on the menu was the Froferbridie, a Scottish meat pie. Every year, that item gets more fun. This year we had a retired school teacher stop by to argue vehemently over the spelling; three hundred years ago, no one definately decided how this word should be spelled, but people argue anyway.
One man asked what the "for fat brides" were.
Someone wanted to order a "fur pie".
Some called it "fluffy-birdie."

Mmm, those things are good.

Up north we have a use for grits.  It makes our sandpaper work - and we can get them in all varieties but adding butter would not help.

Aren't butter milk biscuits like dinner rolls except mealy and made from milk that has gone bad?

They kind of all lump together in your mouth as you chew them and stick to the sides of your throat when you try to swallow.

Kind of like the larva form of English Muffins I think.

Yuk!

No, Michael, this time you are wrong. They are wonderfully fluffy....hot and flaky and smothered with butter....mmmmmm

If you've had the kind you describe, then the cook should be punished!

I like 'em fried, like pancakes.

You like what fried? The bugs or the grits? And if the grits, how can you fry that sloppy mess of white stuff?
I have no idea how to fry it. I've tried, and it just turns into brown slop instead of white slop. But my great-uncle fries it and loves it, and I like HIM, so...yeah, I like 'em fried.  :P

 ;D  Evangelist

Ring that dinner bell, and we'll all come a runnin'.

YUM!

Deep fried turkey is wonderful. You inject it with your seasonings before you drop it in. Most folks let it sit for a day and drink in the flavors. Cajun style is great. WOW!

Finger lickin' - lip smackin' good!!

Yep, plenty of stomach  ;D.........unfortunately, all 38" of it!! :(

Actually, it's the jalapenos that have made it possible....they burn up all the bad bacteria and other yukkies that eat holes in the lining of the stomach and cause ulcers....you know what they say, "a jalapeno (or 4) a day keeps the doctor away".  Hehehehe.

Fatback is similar to bacon, with more fat and less meat, highly salted and cured. Slice it into strips and use it for seasoning peas, beans and cabbage, or fry it until brown and crisp....usually requires several fryings and drainings.

Turney is fried in a special pot (about a 64 qt. size or larger), with a special rack. After seasoning (injection and rubbing), the turkey is put down in the oil (peanut oil is best, cooks hotter without burning), and left for x minutes based on weight. My, my.....you'll come back for more!!  Check at your local sporting goods store, or Academy, or even Wallyworld. You can usually the fryers. They come with a special stand, and a propane burner. Best to do the cooking outside, too!!

Did I forget to mention I love jalapenos? If you want an interesting treat, pick up some fresh jalapenos. Slice in half and remove the seeds. Lay out on a cookie sheet, salt well (garlic salt is nice), and bake in the oven for 45 min. @ 300.  Remove, place on paper towel to soak up juice, then refrigerate. Mix up some tuna fish with onion, pimentos, and dice in some finely chopped pecans, then stuff the jalapenos with the mixture. Makes a FINE nibbler!!! :)

Evangelist, have you ever thought that this:

Fatback - more fat and less meat, highly salted and cured

might be the reason for this:

all 38" of it!!
  ;D

...Sorry, I couldn't resist. I've fought the losing battle against the bugle all my life.

It sounds yummy, but I doubt I could get back into my clothes if I ate too much of that....and I wonder if my heart would rebel at all that oil.... (although peanut oil is good!)

Anything that has the potential to burn off my tongue is not going in my mouth....I like talkin' too much  ;D But I like tuna fish & pecans....maybe I'll try them in a pita.

Thanks for the ideas!

Welll.......I keep telling myself that since my waist size is the same as it was in high school (50 years ago), and my weight is only 5 lbs more (245) than when I played football, and although my chest has shrunk from 58 to 55 and I've lost a little height from 6'5 to 6'4, that a few more bites won't hurt  ;D ;D ;D........'sides, I only do the fatback 4 or 5 times a year ( or maybe it's 10 or 12  ;) )
