Title: Yo yo, Hunting!
Post by: Yoyostick on June 26, 2004, 04:27:55 PM
Does anybody here hunt?? ??? That is a sport isn't it?

I never was much for larger game (deer, moose, elk, bear, etc.) but I always enjoyed bird hunting.  I also enjoy fishing (which is a form of hunting, right???).

Basic rule my father taught me: never "harvest" anything you aren't going to eat - doesn't matter if it is a potato or a rabbit.

Is it a sport?  I suppose that depends on how seriously you take it.  If you stay in super good condition to hike ten miles, harvest a dear and carry it back before the meat spoils, then it is a definite a sport.  For the kind of hunting I enjoy (a leisurely stroll in the Sierra foothills followed by a feast of quail) – nope not a sport.  More like ‘shopping’.  ;D

We're a family of hunters! 'Cept for me these days... :-[ I just get to cook and eat!  ;)

When the freezer is full, the hunting is done for the season. None is wasted! The kids take turns going out with my husband and they come back TIRED! Lots of walking... They've all learned so much about animals. What's been where by the tracks, rubbings, and droppings :-X. Re-loading and math.... FPS, grams, etc. Too much for me!

My husband was walking back with the oldest daughter one evening. It was almost completely dark. I saw them coming up and said that I thought it was really cool that a teen girl was coming out of the woods at dark and wasn't the least bit fearful. My husband said; "She's a blonde with a gun, why should she be afraid?"  ;D

A sport? Yes! Lots of hiking through varied terrain. And those deer stands have rungs to climb!  ;D

Someday (I'm dreaming, don't worry) I'm going to go to Africa and hunt Kudu and Gemsbok and Cape Buffalo (maybe). But first I have to get a big grizzly, and a moose, of course, and a caribou . . . somebody stop me, I'm drooling.  ;D 8) :P

So there's only armchair quarterbacks around here? What has happened to the hunters? Did the grocery stores kill them off?  ;D

Beef, pig, buffalo, goat (well – lamb), ostrich, turkey, duck, goose, salmon, halibut, trout – Safeway DOES seem to do most of the hunting and fishing now days…I guess if they sold a good quail I’d have no reason to hunt at all!  If they had good striped bass, large mouth bass, crappie and sturgeon I could give up fishing, too!
 ;D

But, then - what would I do with my boat and my shotgun?  :-\

Hm.  I guess I'd develop a taste for meadow lark and carp.  ;D

My late daddy used to take me hunting in Northern,California where I was born.  Also to the Black Hills of Wyoming every winter from the 1960s to the 1970s.

I still like deer meat, it's much leaner than beef is. I have eaten Elk, Moose, and many others. My daddy was an avid outdoorsman!

Yee Haw! So hunting ain't dead!  ;D  :-X

JudgeNot, It's a good thing you don't live here..... we have a local grocer that DOES sell quail! :-X You'd have no reason to hunt!  :'(
Course my husband says it tastes better when you follow the 'do-it-yourself' way!  ;D

But, then - what would I do with my boat and my shotgun?
Now that would be a huge problem!  ;)

I know a guy who said the best thing he's ever eaten is turtle stew. Doesn't make for a very challenging hunt, though.  :P

ROFL! Nope, not challenging at all.  ;D

No, the most challenging hunts are the ones that produce the worst meat. Like bear. That same guy said that bear meat is essentially nothing but lard and is rather unappetizing (he's eaten it, too). But bear are one of the most challenging game in North America. It doesn't seem quite fair.  ::) :P

You egg and flour it, season to taste. fry in a cast iron skillet for a few minutes, (med-low heat) turn it over and in a few minutes you have good meat.

Before I got hurt, I use to hunt elk. Hiking 5-10 miles into the woods, tracking my prey. I love the taste of elk, Yes it is a sport.

But even if you can't hunt anymore, you can be here and I'm thankful for that!  :D

Okay, get ready for a long story.

When we lived in Colorado, my dad shot a 13-point (non-typical) elk. He was up in the mountains near Pagosa Springs. He was waiting near a creek when an elk came trudging through the woods. He raised his .308, aimed, and let off three shots. The elk dropped. When my dad came up to it, he noticed a wound on the elk's rump. He had been aiming for the shoulder, and he couldn't believe his aim had been that bad. Well, later my dad met a friend of his. It turns out his friend and taken a pot shot at a running elk. He figured he had wounded it, but it got away. He was kicking himself because he should have known better than to shoot at a running elk. Well, it turns out that the elk my dad had shot, and the elk his friend had shot were the same one. Now there's a coincedence for ya.

I don't really remember what the meat tasted like, but I know it was good. We had elk for dinner for a LONG time after that.  :P

I note in the news, recently, they are looking at legalizing cat hunting in Wisconsin.  According to what I’ve read, feral cats are responsible for the deaths of between 47 million to 139 million songbirds every year – and that’s just in Wisconsin!

I should note that it is legal to hunt cats in some other states.

What do you all think?  Is cat hunting a sport?  ;D

If it is as challenging as herding cats, I would say it’s definitely a sport!  :D

I don't think it's very sporting. Although it's not a bad idea. :P I've seen lots of cats that I could very easily pick off with my .22. Not nearly as hard as deer hunting. 8)

2ndT - If you want to know the truth - I would rank that right up there with 'Bull Riding'.  Both in skill and the amount of brains it would take realize it may not be something the average guy wants to do...
 ;D
(For bear give me my model 94 in a .44  :) )

Just for the record, I wasn't suggesting it....lol   Just pointing out what I would consider an extreme sport  ;D

People do that. A well placed arrow is just as dangerous as a bullet. The hard part is hitting the right place with your arrow. It's a whole lot easier to just line up the crosshairs and pull the trigger. :P

out and ready whilest this fellow bears down on you...pun intended  ;D

Of course, you could whip out your nail clippers and forego the bow and arrows.   He looks like he's in need of a manicure.

Yes, I'm a hunter been doing it since I was very young. I hunt deer, turkey, small game, and upland game. I'm glad to see this post here!

I love the Lord and hunting so some friends of mine and I have started a group called the "Fellowship of the Outdoors". I don't want to spam so if you are interested in seeing what we are doing send me a PM and I'll send you the address of our site.
