Title: Desert Island - Three books Only - What Are They?
Post by: AVBunyan on May 22, 2004, 04:49:40 PM
You are fixing to be banned to a desert island - your tormentors are gracious and give you three "spiritual" books along with your Bible .

What are they and why?

Mine?

1. "The Pilgrim's Progress", John Bunyon
Will teach me the about myself and the Christian walk

2. Matthew Henry's Commentaries
Will get me through the Bible - some good doctrine but more for my heart

3. "The Christian's Directory", Richard Baxter
Covers all the areas of the Christian life

Your choice - no debating - not mocking - just wondering

May God bless

That would depend on if they count the complete 20 volume history of Middle Earth as a single book or not... And how cute the native girls are... ;D ;)

Smile on the Face of God:  Adrian Plass
Either another CS Lewis, or Alien at St Winifreds (Plass)

Along with the KJV:

"Strongs Exhaustive Concordance with Greek/Hebrew/Chaldee Dictionary"

"Vines Expository Dictionary"

"Nichol's Pocket Bible Encyclopedia"

I would like a fourth: "The Interlinear Bible Hebrew/Greek/English"

1. My scriptures, the ones I use everyday that have all my lovely notes in them. I don't want just any scriptures.  I'm rather attached to my personal set.
2. Kingdom and the Crown (if you count this trilogy taking place at the time of Christ as one book).
3. A Dr. Suess book (if you stretch meanings you can find a spiritual meaning).

1. "Strong's" would be good.
2. Either "The Complete Works of Shakespeare" or “War and Peace": I want something that will last long enough for me to forget the beginning by the time I get to the end.  :)
3. A blank journal with lots of pages.

I hated War and Peace.  The first time I read the Bible cover to cover I was in the Navy and made a pledge to read the Bible on one cruise (lovely name for forced servitude don't you think   ;D) and read War and Peace on the next.  I made it through the Bible but War and Peace was awful couldn't keep all the weird names straight.  Since then my wife has read War and Peace and loved it though so who knows?

My choices for three spiritual books in addition to the Bible are:

Strong's Concordance
The Catholic Catechism
Thomas Aquinas - Summa Theologae

I would only need one book; the bible. It has everything I need to know about my purpose in life.
