I decided that I needed to spend some extra time in God's Word today. I've been slipping in my reading.

I think devotionals are great, but I get more when I just read the Bible on my own.

In my daily Bible reading I started with the book of Ruth (because that is where my book marker was). I love that book! I promised myself that if I made it through 1st and 2nd Samuel then I would get to read Ruth again today.
I only made it to 2nd Samuel 12.

I always learn so much about the love and patience the Lord has for us when I read about David and his struggles. Yet, he was considered a man after God's own heart. God remained faithful to him, even when he fell.
I not only stumble, I fall flat on my face!
I'm so thankful God doesn't give up on me.

Oh well, I can always read Ruth again anyway. It will probably remain one of my favorite books of the Bible because it represents such a beautiful and pure love.

Paul was another awesome man of God who we can learn a lot from.

It reminds me constantly that no matter how petulant I am, no matter how self-righteous I may be, no matter how much I concentrate on what I want, that God is faithful and just, and produces miracles of salvation in spite of me, (the sailors on the ship, the great city of Nineveh), and teaches me lessons about myself in the process (the vine and the worm).

Job
"I shall rain on the just and the unjust".
"Now I have seen thee with mine eyes....and I abhor myself......"
"I know that in the last day, I SHALL SEE my Savior stand upon the earth".

I have many favorites. If I had to narrow it down to two, it would be Romans and Ephesians. If I had to choose one, it would have to be Ephesians.

Understanding God's Grace, HIS Love, and HIS Gift to us is beautiful. Understanding THE CROSS and what Jesus Christ did for us and why is the most precious event in human history. This is our hope and what we cling to in a dark and dying world. In short, Jesus is our LIGHT and SALVATION!

I keep coming back to Ephesians because it reveals and glorifies THE LIGHT.

You know it started out because of the mention at the very end about that God cares about the Cattle.  But in my walk with God, I've gone back over and over and find there's a million other reasons.

One of them is that Jonah learned that the path of least resistance isn't always set up by the Lord, there for him to find.

Sometimes I get this idea in my head that I'm going to do this or that and wala it's already set up for me.  People even say the things I want to hear.  The Lord, however, is always there with a big fish.   ;D

 ;D  Does anyone out there share with me the working knowledge of the insides of a belly of a fish?   ;D

Then there's the part--my favorite concept is that as Christians, we can't go around hating sinners.  The Ninevites were in fact terrible to the Isrealites and there were solid reasons for folks to not like them.  It's up to us to live out God's love.  It's up to God to punish folks.  It's up to us to live the example and live the standard and see that we fail the standard and then make mercy for other people to fail also and still love them.   It's up to God to give us the strenghth to do so.  And in His mercy, He will send big fishes  ;D when necesary.  It makes me LOVE my Lord even more.  Does anyone ever think about this when they see the symbol of the Jesus fish??

It's sort of a fear or the Lord, and the big fish He might have to send, sign for me.   ;D  And yet in His mercy we can trust Him to do that for us.

New Testament?
Mine fall in order:
The Gospels - Acts - Romans then the rest of the letters - Revelations.
And I think they are in that order for a good reason.

I won't spell those reasons out... But if someone wants to take a stab at why they are in the order they are in I'd read your reasoning. ;D

Woops - maybe that's for a different thread?  I don't want to mess with the question at hand...

I think Old Testament is really up for grabs.  There are some I love to read, and then a few I find "numbing" (who begat WHO!).  How can you rate History against Songs against Prophesy?  I think it depends on one’s mood.  Then, I guess one’s personality comes into play…  What suicidal mind-set wouldn’t prefer Lamentations?   ;)
Although Ecclesiastes rates WAY up there!  ;D

My favorite is the book of Sirach (Ecclesiasticus).  The prose is absolutely beautiful.

My favorite is the book of Job. The book of Job shows what faith can do, if you are faithful to God.

I just finished reading 2 Chronicles.
I'm starting to think that my favorite book of the Bible is whichever book I happen to be reading at the time.  ;D

I love the Acts of the Apostles.  It's nice to see the similarities in the Early Church and the Church I belong to.

Yes, I attend a church that is definately a New Testament church.

But is it THE New Testament Church?

Of course it is!
We follow Christ's ways just like in the NT.

I'm Not Roman Catholic.

I'm Eastern Orthodox.  There is a huge difference.    

I haven't noticed a huge difference, but that's best saved for another thread.

Other than the gospels of Matthew and John, I love Ecclesiastes. No man supasses the wisdom of Solomon.

Of the Gospels, I think Mark and John are my favorites. If I had to pick one, it would be Mark.

Maybe that is because Mark had a more journalistic approach to his writing and in college I majored in journalism.

My favorite book of the Bible at this point in my life is Proverbs.

The wise sayings of a man that at a young age realized his dependence on God and yet inspite of all  God's blessings in his later years lost that dependence and yet much of his writing show us how we must never allow our blessings to remove us from His presence.

It speaks of the practical affairs of ones life and emphasises Righteousness and the Fear of God.

I like Acts. I like the conversion of Saul.  It reminds me that we all do bad things and can be forgiven.  

I also like Job.  It reminds me to constantly thank God for all he has done.  The past few years have been extremely rough and it's easy to fall into a pit of despair given the circumstances, but I am reminded to keep my head up, thank God, and be happy b/c nothing is so bad that we can not overcome it.  

I also think the book of Acts is the most interesting book in the bible and actually a compilation of the whole NT. I read thru that book more than any other and of course the book of Romans is the next book I read after that.
    I think the book of Ezekiel in the OT is one of the most interesting books and I read that with Revelation as it appears to follow that book pretty closely and actually helped me interpret revelation a lot.

One evening I was reading Ephesians and discovered the whole function, plan, and synopsis of God, His plan, Jesus's
and our place in the whole matter of life.   This is in chapter three of Ephesians beginning in verse 14 through 21.  I will not write it out because I have little time left on here.  

If you read slowly, it will show you everything in a nutshell.  I share this whenever the opportunity comes up.  It was such a found jewel.  Thanks for the opportunity to share it.  

I think the whole book of Ephesians is wonderful.

 john because it goes into detail about Jesus idenity and life.
 
1 john teaches us to love and that God is love.

and psalms because well, their uplifting when ever im down.

The book of Isaiah is my favorite because the prophet's writings are beautiful, on point and indisputable.

I have many favorites, but the one that stands out in my heart is Job. Not the parts about Job's suffering, though I have great compassion for what he went through. And God did bless him mightly afterward.

What I LOVE is when God talks about himself. When He asks Job - where were you when I.....

At the end Job says: I knew ABOUT you, now I KNOW you.

Extemely inspiring!

Talk about a mighty God we have. Beyond words that I can put together.

I don't really have a favourite book but I have a favourite chapter: PSalm 23. It's the first thing I read properly and it really blessed me; I think it's not just my favourite passage but others as well.

I like the book of Provrebs though. I like to use it on my sister, if you get what I mean.

I can't exlain it properly, but I have my reasons for liking the book.

For me, Romans. And particularly chapter 8. It seems so very complete in God's desire, purpose and hope for my life.

I guess my next favorite would be the Gospel of John. It seems to be a more personal account of Jesus' life...sort of a bio on Johns' "best buddy". It's more intimate than the others and that's the kind of relationship our King desires of us...very intimate.
