Title: Is the Bible the Word of God? Yes / No?
Post by: Loki on March 21, 2004, 02:02:12 PM
Hello, on one of the forums I hang out in of the posters is an avid United Methodist, yet he seemed totally unable to give a straightforward answer to this rather central question, despite me pointing him in the direction of hundreds of UM websites that stated unequivocally that the Bible was the word of God!

So do you think the Bible is the undisputed word of God?  Please give reasons.

Hello Loki,

UM??, Are you claiming to be a Norse deity in your profile shown in every message, or simply a follower of a Norse deity?

Yes, the Holy Bible is the WORD OF GOD.

hokey, all clear now!!

And strangely enough I am not a norse deity really, I'm Swedish and quite interested in Viking mythology, not that I believe it.

So are there any on here who believe the bible is NOT the word of God in its entirety then? Old and New testaments of course because they're both part of the Bible. And if not why?

If you are searching for a ‘dissenting opinion’ (i.e. a ‘no’ answer) on a Christian forum, I doubt you will get any (except from visiting non-Christians).
If the Bible is not the inspired Word, we are wasting our time in our faith.  I can promise you – our time is not wasted.  :)

John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Period and Amen.

Yes!

 Exodus 24:12.  And the Lord said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.

 Numbers 15:23.  Even all that the Lord hath commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day that the Lord commanded Moses, and henceforward among your generations;

Deuteronomy 4:2.  Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.

1 Corinthians 14:37.  If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

A few verses in the Bible that come into the heart by way of the Holy Spirit and tell one that what they are reading is of God. There are many more. In fact, all.

OK thanks well the message seems to be unequivocal: You lot believe the Bible is the Word of God, no question.

I can't understand why this United Methodist guy was wriggling so much, he refused to state his opinion either way, instead preferring to throw passages and parables at me which did not give me an answer to this simple question!  I even pointed him to 227 web pages written by United Methodists where they stated the Bible was the word of God and asked him if he could find a dissenting opinion anywhere?  But still he refused to be drawn.  I was puzzled because this question seems to be rather central to the faith so every devout Christian should have an unequivocal position on the matter!

Mind you, the guy is none to bright.

Despite the name of this forum, posters here don't represent a very broad cross section of Christianity.

Calling the bible the Word of God can be unhelpful, as it can lead to confusion with THE Word of God - Christ.   So then you get into asking what do you actually mean by the title 'the Word of God'?

Oklahoma Howdy to Loki,

Maybe it would be more accurate to change "devout" above to "real". A real Christian has no doubt at all that the Holy Bible is the Word of God. Some folks play act at being Christians and don't have a clue. The Holy Bible, all of it, is the Word of God, even for a real Christian beginner. It makes no difference at all that the entire Bible DOES NOT consist of direct quotes from Jesus Christ. God breathed the words of the Holy Bible, and the writers of the Bible were inspired by the Holy Spirit what to write. So, from cover to cover, the Holy Bible is THE WORD OF GOD.

Loki,

The Word is His inspiration. However, some of the books have been taken out or are missing.

Look at a 1611 version of the KJV bible and compare it to the modern KJV. Go back even further and read the Septuagint (LXX) and compare the changes over the years.

There are many things, factual, worth looking into.

As for the Word, yes, His inspiration. And, yes, man has made some changes and tampered with it. And it still is happening today. Compare the NIV to the KJV. The scriptures are being watered-down as we speak. Don't just take my word for it, search the matter and pray for the truth, He'll show you the truth if you really want it.

I believe the Bible is the true Word of God. Both the Old and the New testament (I know there are groups that say only one of the two really matters). I have nothing to add to the scriptures quoted. As for that United Methodist: many people refuse to accept the Bible as the Word of God, because it works like a mirror. It demands some action and people rather want to walk their own ways instead of God's. There are words not translated well, but those are few. There are two kinds of Bibles: one that translates the Bible word by word from the original texts and one that translates thought by thought. I use both if I want to understand a verse.

Just some thoughts.

Amen Jippia, both the OT and the NT are the Word of God. It does demand action and they don't want to follow through with the responsibilities Christians have as believers.  Walking their own way is much easier.

As for scriptures go there is this one also:
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,"  2 Tim 3:16

It's easy to quote verses, but it's by our faith that we believe it to be true.

God bless

The witness we have today, just in the shape of the world, confirms what the scriptures tell us about man, Israel. good, and evil. All a person has to do is read the whole thing with a heart open to God, trusting Him to be potent enough to preserve His truth, and the truth will bear witness within us as to the veracity of it. If God cannot preserve for us the truth and Jesus did not rise from the dead, then we are the most miserable of people, as the scripture tells us.
The Bible is so unique as a book, that there is nothing that even comes close to it. It is not just a book of axioms, but one that is full of the truth about the blood shed and the evil and loss suffered by man as God's creation. Yes, there will be many that try to chip away at the veracity of God's Word and therefore make God impotent, but even that is foretold to us in His Word.
Just the prophecies concerning Israel, popping up in 1948 and the end of Gentile domination of Jerusalem in 1967, should be enough to shock anyone into realizing the truth of God's Word if one has a heart ready and willing to seek and know the truth.
The unregenerate spirit will do all it can to preserve its own pride and position against submitting to the truth of God, preferring, rather, to hide their deeds in darkness - and what better way for them to justify their own darkness and sinful deeds, but to throw doubt upon the truth of God's Word. The last days will produce many that try to turn the truth of God's Word into fables and regard them as mythology or even lies. I am glad we have an anchor for our souls in God's living Word, and that our God is a mighty God and able to keep us through that living Word - Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Romans 1:18  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Romans 9:1  I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,

Ephesians 1:13  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

2 Timothy 4:4  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Hebrews 6:18  That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
19  Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
