IN BRIEF

Dems’ Russia-Collusion Charade — The Criminal Investigation10

We learned Thursday that U.S. Attorney John Durham’s Justice Department probe into the origins of the Russia-collusion hoax11 — a hoax that began as an intelligence investigation known as Crossfire Hurricane12 — has now become a criminal investigation. As Fox News explains, “The investigation’s new status means Durham can subpoena witnesses, file charges, and impanel fact-finding grand juries.” This is a significant development because it means that Durham has uncovered some form of criminal activity, though exactly what the crime is and the degree and scope of it is not yet known.

This is clearly not the news Democrats, fully invested in their partisan anti-Trump impeachment campaign, wanted to hear. In a joint statement, Democrat House Committee Chairmen Jerry Nadler (NY) and Adam Schiff (CA) responded, “These reports, if true, raise profound new concerns that the Department of Justice under Attorney General William Barr has lost its independence and become a vehicle for President [Donald] Trump’s political revenge. If the Department of Justice may be used as a tool of political retribution, or to help the President with a political narrative for the next election, the rule of law will suffer.”

Noting the irony of Nadler and Schiff’s statement, Mark Alexander comments, “So now that the Mueller investigation built on a partisan deep-state coup collapsed, any criminal investigation into its origins must be partisan. We are in very dangerous territory here with respect to our Constitution and Rule of Law, given that deep-state operatives and the federal government attempted to overthrow the president, and now those who should be, ostensibly, overseeing those agencies have become their protecters.”

It now appears what triggered the probe’s change to a criminal investigation followed a recent meeting in Rome, Italy, where Durham and Attorney General William Barr met with “high-level Italian security agents.” Rome is a significant piece in this puzzle due to it being the location where Page met with Joseph Mifsud, a professor who first told Page that the Russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton. This may have been where a deep-state plot to tie the Russian-collusion hoax to then-candidate Trump was initiated. All roads lead to Rome?

There’s also news that Durham is planning to interview several FBI and CIA officials, which has prompted some to hire attorneys. Furthermore, there’s word that Durham wants to question both former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former CIA Director John Brennan, the latter in particular a key coup co-conspirator13.

Finally, Horowitz’s soon-to-be released report may shed more light onto the direction of Durham’s criminal investigation. But all we know now is that Durham’s digging has turned up something criminal, and it appears that some folks are beginning to run for cover.

Democrats Continue to Hide Whistleblower Identity14

Adam Schiff, chairman of the powerful House Intelligence Committee, lied about his contact with the so-called whistleblower15. He’s been holding closed-door hearings to keep the Democrats’ impeachment efforts shrouded in secrecy16. And he’s had the gall to say the whistleblower may not need to testify because other witnesses are proving to be damning enough. But we’re supposed to believe Democrats are conducting their attempted impeachment coup17 on the up and up.

Nearly two weeks ago, Schiff was already hinting that the whistleblower’s testimony “might not be necessary.” Several Democrats involved in the impeachment “inquiry” are now insisting it’s not necessary. “It’s quite clear we have a surfeit of evidence that corroborates in full every aspect of what happened,” said Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-VA). Rep. Jamie B. Raskin (D-MD) added, “The whistleblower will go down in history as a hero for kicking off this process. But the whistleblower is no longer integral to the investigation in any way.”

The whistleblower is a political hack who coordinated with a Democrat hack, but why quibble over semantics?

It’s true that President Donald Trump’s careless words to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky provided the opening for Democrats to pivot from their utterly failed Russia-collusion narrative after the nothingburger that was Robert Mueller’s report18 to Trump’s supposed improprieties in advance of the 2020 election. But it’s not exactly self-evident, as Democrats want us to believe, that Trump committed an impeachable offense by requesting help from an ally to investigate shenanigans in the 2016 election. Shenanigans that, by the way, involved Democrat contacts in Ukraine.

And given what we already know about Schiff and the whistleblower, it’s clear that Democrats, who are carefully scripting the impeachment narrative via strategic leaks and the like, know that having the whistleblower testify won’t actually help their case. Beyond that collusion, there are unanswered questions about the whistleblower reporting form19 — questions Democrats almost certainly don’t want answered by giving Republicans a chance at cross-examination.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Gary Bauer: “The Crimson, a conservative student newspaper at Harvard University, [is] facing protests and boycotts because it requested a comment from ICE on a recent immigration related story. That’s it. The paper’s opponents apparently feel that ICE has no free-speech rights and that the paper should lose its rights for attempting to talk to ICE. Keep in mind that this hostility to free speech is happening at one of our nation’s most elite and prestigious universities. This is where future congressmen, senators, justices, and corporate leaders are currently being educated. And it’s not just Harvard. Virtually every university campus is hostile to free speech and free thought, and this closed mindset is dangerous to a free society.”

SHORT CUTS

Observations: “What we have is a rogue Democrat Party in the House of Representatives that’s using the institution of the House and the impeachment clause to interfere with the 2020 election. They’re interfering with the 2020 election more than the Russians did, more than Ukrainians did, even though that was bad enough, and they’re using our tax dollars to do it.” —Mark Levin

No doubt: “If [Republicans] were doing this [closed-door impeachment], you would be beating the s—t out of all of us.” —Sen. Lindsey Graham to the Leftmedia

Friendly fire: “I don’t know what’s going on in those closed doors. We as members of Congress do not have access to the information that’s being shared. I think the American people deserve to know exactly what the facts are, what the evidence is being presented as this inquiry goes on.” —Rep. Tulsi Gabbard

Non sequitur: “All the facts must come out and those who are attempting to obstruct this fact-finding inquiry may regret the day when they said all they want to do is open up the process. Our Republican friends may get what they wished for — all the facts coming out.” —Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer

Foreign interference: “We have to work at the state and local level in terms of making sure that these voter ID laws are not passed, making sure that we have … monitors, lawyers, people watching the polls all the time, I personally want to ask the UN to come in. I’ve observed elections all over the world, and I think right now we need election observers from all over the world coming to monitor and to look at these tactics.” —Rep. Barbara Lee

Déjà vu: “Under my plan, if you negotiated an agreement for healthcare with your employer, union, or otherwise, and you like it because you’ve given up wages to get it, you can keep it.” —Joe Biden

More freebies: “It is a moral stain on our country that we have half a million or more people facing homelessness. … In a few weeks, we are going to introduce our ‘Homes For All’ legislation, which will, hopefully, guarantee a home for everyone.” —Rep. Ilhan Omar

Non compos mentis: “The people that are producing climate change, the folks that are responsible for the largest amount of emissions, or communities, or corporations, they tend to be predominantly white. … We can’t act as though the inertia and history of colonization doesn’t play a role in this.” —Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

And last… “The ones who were the loudest voices in spreading the Russian collusion hoax now also seem to be the ones most determined to prevent the truth about its origins from coming to light.” —Rep. Mark Meadows
