THE FOUNDATION

“A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.” —Samuel Adams (1779)

IN BRIEF

Left Longs for Politically Induced Recession10

In June of last year, HBO’s Bill Maher asserted11, “I think one way you get rid of Trump is a crashing economy. So please, bring on the recession. Sorry if that hurts people, but it’s either root for a recession, or you lose your democracy.” A few weeks ago, Maher again acknowledged12, “I’ve been hoping for a recession. People hate me for it, but it would get rid of Trump, so you shouldn’t hate me for it. … It’s worth it.” On Friday, he admitted anew13, “I’ve been rooting for a recession. … You should wish for a recession. ‘Cause that will definitely get [Trump] unelected. … We have survived many recessions. We can’t survive another Donald Trump term.”

So on at least three occasions now, Maher has clamored for more unemployment, more bankruptcies, lower wages, and deteriorating stock-market portfolios due to his animosity toward Trump. And if workers’ livelihoods must languish to purge Trump from office, then that’s a noble sacrifice in his warped mind. Of course, it’s easy for elitists like Maher to feel that way because they wouldn’t be significantly affected by a recession. Maher makes millions of dollars every year by giving his devoted audience ridiculous lectures on TV. But those of us he sees as deplorables are necessary collateral damage in a recession that will, the Left hopes, result in Trump being a one-term president.

The Media Research Center’s Brent Baker rightly responded, “Maher couldn’t have provided the people in ‘flyover country’ with a better example of the disdain for them from a coastal elite. Maher puts his personal hatred of President Trump ahead of the welfare of the American people. No wonder middle America has so embraced Trump as a fighter for them against the elites.”

No kidding. Sadly, even the leftmedia supports Maher’s sentiments. According to The Washington Free Beacon14, “NBC News foreign correspondent Richard Engel … sided with … Maher after he expressed desire for an economic recession to help defeat President Donald Trump in 2020.” Engel went so far as to say, “Short-term pain might be better than long-term destruction of the Constitution.” Engel is what some would consider a “journalist.”

Late last year, our own Mark Alexander ominously wondered, “Will Democrats Get the Impeachment Recession They Want?15” Alexander noted:

Caught in the Democrats’ political crossfire are tens of millions of American workers and their families whose jobs and income prospects will fall victim to the Demos’ politically induced recession — the direct result of having thrown economic confidence under the bus in order to attack Trump. May I remind you, there is precedent for Democrats seeding economic recession under sitting Republican presidents ahead of presidential elections. Recall how, in 2006, they set up the 2008 mortgage financial crisis (almost collapsing the entire banking system) just in time for Barack Obama to ride that wave of fear into office.

And make no mistake, the Leftmedia is doing its darnedest to make it happen, much to the joy of Bill Maher. According to Reuters, “‘Reasonably good’ is not what Trump promised to deliver during his 2016 campaign, and at this point he heads into a reelection year short of the key economic goals he set and worried a recession could undermine his bid for a second term.” In a piece titled “Is the economy turning against Trump?” Washington Post columnist Robert J. Samuelson surmises, “There is growing evidence of a possible recession. If one materializes, President Trump could lose his most powerful argument for reelection: a strong economy.” And just for good measure, The Washington Post’s Aaron Blake delved into “How a recession could doom Trump’s 2020 reelection.”

Memo to voters: If Democrats truly cared about your welfare, they wouldn’t be hankering for your livelihoods to crater for the sake of their political agenda.

DHS Updates Immigration Rule Limiting Welfare Recipients16

On Monday, the Trump administration released its update to rules on immigration applicants that aims to limit the number of impoverished immigrants allowed to legally enter and remain in the U.S. Acting Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli explained, “This is really an example of President Trump enforcing long-standing law that required people coming to the country or that wanted to be here long term to be self-reliant. That self-sufficiency is a core American value, and it is central to the purpose of this rule.”

Under the update, U.S. immigration authorities will view applicants’ use of government assistance programs as a negative mark against them when considering their eligibility for a temporary visa or a green card. National Review notes that “the rule change will affect those migrants seeking to enter the U.S. and those who entered the country illegally but wish to obtain legal status. [Department of Homeland Security] officials will take into account would-be immigrants’ education, skills, employment history, health, and a number of other factors to determine whether they are likely to become dependent on the government.”

The change broadens the scope of the “public charge” rule that in 1996 had been limited to only cash-assistance programs to now include non-cash government assistance programs. The change is aimed at limiting the number of new migrants who take advantage of the nation’s welfare programs. As The Wall Street Journal reports, “The use or potential use of a benefits program such as Medicaid, some types of housing assistance or food stamps could disqualify an applicant.”

The idea that the kind of immigrants who the U.S. should seek are those who are primarily motivated by the opportunities afforded by Liberty and not those looking for government-provided handouts17 has been long held throughout most of America’s history. And this latest effort by Trump is intended to restore this perspective on immigration within the U.S. government. Preventing further abuse of America’s arguably overly generous welfare programs is the goal.

TOP NEWS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MCCABE SEEKS REVENGE: “Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe sued the Justice Department and FBI on Thursday for his firing last year, which he says was politically-motivated retribution for failing to support President Donald Trump. In the complaint, McCabe accuses the Justice Department and FBI of ‘unlawful retaliation for his refusal to pledge allegiance to a single man,’ a reference to Trump.” (The Daily Caller24)

GUN-CONTROL NONSTARTER? “Sens. Pat Toomey, a Republican from Pennsylvania, and Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, are lead sponsors of a bill to expand background checks to include gun show and internet sales. … But there are significant differences in what the two parties would be willing to accept in a gun control measure, and that wide gap is not bridged by the Toomey-Manchin bill. House Democrats, for starters, say the Toomey-Manchin background check bill doesn’t go far enough.” (Washington Examiner25)

NRA FALLOUT: “Julie Golob, a professional sport shooter and a strong public advocate for gun rights, announced Monday she was resigning from the National Rifle Association board before the end of her three-year term. She is the fourth member in the past two weeks to leave the board of the NRA in a sign of further upheaval within the nation’s most powerful gun rights group.** (The Washington Post26)

ESA ADJUSTMENTS: "The Trump administration announced on Monday it would change how it implements the Endangered Species Act. … The revisions announced in the new rule were a culmination of more than a year of efforts to loosen restrictions written to protect hundreds of species judged to be under pressure. The Interior Department has argued that a streamlining is necessary to update how it enforces the 1973 law, including allowing the federal government to begin to measure the economic costs of protecting some species.” (Politico27)

EPSTEIN UPDATE: “Jeffrey Epstein was found hanging in his lower Manhattan jail cell with a bedsheet wrapped around his neck and secured to the top of a bunk bed,” according to the New York Post28. The New York Times adds29, “One of the two people guarding Jeffrey Epstein when he apparently hanged himself in a federal jail cell was not a full-fledged correctional officer, and neither guard had checked on Mr. Epstein for several hours before he was discovered.” Meanwhile, NBC News reports30 that “FBI agents raided Jeffrey Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean on Monday in a vivid display that the probe into his alleged sex trafficking ring is continuing despite his death.”

ASSAILANT’S FRIEND CHARGED: “Federal prosecutors announced charges Monday against Ethan Kollie and accused him of buying weaponry used by [the assailant] in last week’s mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio. … Benjamin C. Glassman, the U.S. attorney for the southern district of Ohio, said Mr. Kollie bought the body armor, large-capacity drum magazine and a part of the AR-15-style weapon Betts used in the Aug. 4 attack.” (The Washington Times31)

RECIPE FOR VOTER FRAUD: “California’s ambitious effort to automate voter registration at Department of Motor Vehicle offices produced almost 84,000 duplicate records and more than twice that number with political party mistakes, according to an audit released Friday by state officials.” (Los Angeles Times32)

VILLAGE ACADEMIC CURRICULUM: “The Land of Lincoln will require public schools to incorporate LGBTQ figures into history lessons. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Friday signed House Bill 246, which mandates the following: ‘In public schools only, the teaching of history shall include a study of the roles and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in the history of this country and this State.’” (The Washington Times33)

POLICY: “Red flag” laws are the wrong solution to mass shootings (National Review34)

POLICY: Universal background checks are constitutionally suspect (National Review35)

HUMOR: Buttigieg: Trump “mirrors Hitler’s rhetoric” by using “a very similar alphabet” (IMAO36)

OPINION IN BRIEF

Cal Thomas: “It would be a convenience, to say the least, for [Jeffrey] Epstein to be out of the way before his trial and it wouldn’t be the first time someone got knocked off in prison for revenge or to guarantee their silence. Whitey Bulger, the Irish-American crime boss, was killed by inmates shortly after arriving at the U.S. Penitentiary, Hazelton, in West Virginia, last October. An old joke says, ‘Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you.’ And just because conspiracies might make you suspicious, doesn’t mean this might not be one. Let the investigation begin, let it be thorough and let it be conducted without favor to anyone.”

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who do not want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public.” —Booker T. Washington (1856-1915)

Braying Jackass: “I’m very proud of my brother [Rep. Joaquin Castro] and my brother took what is publicly available information that newspapers, other publications regularly do about people who maxed out, made the maximum contribution to President Trump here in San Antonio and he put that forward as he said as a lament to say, ‘Wow, just look.’ I believe that my brother had every right to do that and people should know who was funding that campaign of hate.” —Julian Castro

Non Compos Mentis: “I watched what happened when the kids from Parkland marched … when I was vice president.” —Joe Biden, who was a year removed from the White House when the shooting occurred

The BIG Lie I: “I think the election was stolen from the people of Georgia. I don’t know that empirically I would have won, but if you add together the thousands of people who faced extraordinarily long lines, who faced hurdles that should not happen in a democracy, the votes that we know were not counted, the secretary of state, who was also my opponent in the race, purged more than 1.4 million voters over basically an eight-year period.” —Stacey Abrams

The BIG Lie II: “The warnings of the scientists 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 30 years ago, unfortunately, were accurate.” —Al Gore

The BIG Lie III: “After the tragedies in El Paso and Dayton, there have been 255 mass shootings in 2019 — more than days have passed in the year. Our children are twice as likely to die from gun violence than cancer.” —Andrew Yang

The BIG Lie IV: “5 years ago Michael Brown was murdered by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.” —Sen. Elizabeth Warren

The BIG Lie V: “Michael Brown’s murder forever changed Ferguson and America."—Sen. Kamala Harris

And last… "If you believe the Clintons crafted a genius plan to murder Epstein you’re going to have to explain why Hillary wasn’t even able to find Wisconsin on a map.” —Ben Shapiro
