THE FOUNDATION

“We should be unfaithful to ourselves if we should ever lose sight of the danger to our liberties if anything partial or extraneous should infect the purity of our free, fair, virtuous, and independent elections.” —John Adams (1797)

IN BRIEF

Democrats Lose With Anything but ‘Grace’10

“The grace with which she met that defeat on an unfair, unlevel playing field with the secretary of state perhaps rigging, in part, that election … is inspiring stuff at a time that our democracy is so badly broken.” So said Beto O'Rourke, the media darling who lost his bid to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas, about Stacey Abrams, the media darling who lost (and still refuses to concede) her bid to win the Georgia governorship last November.

Except that Abrams has been anything but gracious.

First of all, Abrams founded a nonprofit through which she flooded then-Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s office with incomplete, inaccurate, and outright fraudulent voter applications — only to cry “racism!” and “voter suppression!” when some of those applications were thrown out. And that was before the election. In other words, she seeded the narrative for her loss even before her defeat.

Second, as our Louis DeBroux noted in November11, “Democrat Abrams lost her race for governor with more votes (1.9 million) than current Republican Governor Nathan Deal won reelection with in 2014 (1.3 million).” Yet she stubbornly clung to her “voter suppression” narrative, frequently airing her phony grievances since the election. Indeed, she now insists record turnout among minorities only “led to even more of those voters being subjected to voter suppression.”

And Beto calls that “grace”? He does need the 2020 votes from minorities, after all.

That brings us to Abrams’s New York Times op-ed just yesterday, titled “Why I Am Determined to End Voter Suppression12.” Spoiler alert: No she’s not; she’s committed to perpetuating and expanding the myth for nationwide political advantage.

She claimed, “My home state, Georgia, for example, suffered a vicious blend of electoral malfeasance, misfeasance and mismanagement during my race for governor last fall. But Georgia is not alone.”

Neither is Abrams alone. Democrats in general are sowing distrust13 in the American electoral system, all while claiming it is Republicans who are undermining elections. And Dems are pushing numerous rules changes — from dumping the Electoral College to blocking citizenship questions on the census — that would stack the deck in their favor14. Meanwhile, people like Elizabeth Warren are telling the American people that “if all the votes are counted, [Democrats will] win every time.”

If this is “grace,” we’d hate to see spiteful, divisive partisan bitterness.

Democrat-Run Cities Drown in Debt15

Truth in Accounting, an organization founded in 2002 “to educate and empower citizens with understandable, reliable, and transparent government financial information,” recently released its report16 on America’s 10 most populous cities and their corresponding taxpayer burdens. The report notes, “Collectively, taxpayers in these 10 cities face an average combined per-taxpayer burden of nearly $50,000, including county, state, and ‘off-balance-sheet’ city government entities. This compares to a per-taxpayer position of $19,000 for their city government alone.”

Topping the list of cities with the highest taxpayer burden is Chicago, coming in at a whopping $119,119 per taxpayer. New York City is a distant second at $85,600. The rest of the list is as follows:

Los Angeles: $56,390
Philadelphia: $50,120
San Jose: $43,120
San Diego: $35,410
Dallas: $33,490
Houston: $22,940
San Antonio: $16,660
Phoenix: $13,290
Much of this burden is due to unfunded retirement obligations that have accumulated over a number of years. In Chicago alone, it’s $39 billion in promised retirement benefits, including $28 billion in unfunded pensions, and $842.9 million in unfunded retiree health care benefits. Interestingly but not surprisingly, of these 10 cities only two — San Diego and San Antonio — are not currently run by Democrats. In fact, Chicago last had a Republican mayor way back in 1931. For Philadelphia, it was 1948. In other words, Democrats’ big-government polices are proving to be fiscally untenable and overly burdensome to taxpayers. And that’s to say nothing of the violence and cultural degradation in these urban poverty plantations.

Meanwhile, is it any wonder many people are fleeing these high-tax locales for lower-taxed, fiscally responsible states like Tennessee? In U.S. News & World Report’s new rankings17, Tennessee really is, as our Robin Smith wrote three years ago18, the “model for America.” In fact, of the top 15 states in the rankings, 12 voted for Donald Trump in 2016. And the top three — Tennessee, Florida, and South Dakota — have no income tax. The general lesson is that spendthrift Democrats lead their cities and states into insurmountable debt, while low-tax Republicans tend to be more fiscally responsible.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Tony Perkins: “Right now, overpopulation should be America’s last concern. The number of babies born last year in the U.S. just hit a 32-year low, worrying anyone with an eye on the country’s future workforce. Only 3.79 million children were born in 2018 — a two percent drop from the previous year. We’re been hovering under America’s replacement level of 2.1 for decades, but this new report is a frightening snapshot of where the country is headed. Fewer babies means fewer workers, and fewer workers means less economic growth, and a smaller tax base, and even less consumer spending. If we continue down this path, the country will have a workforce too small to support their parents’ generation of retirees. And what does the Left want? More abortion.”

SHORT CUTS

For the record: “Madam Speaker, did you bring your handcuffs?” —Attorney General William Barr’s humorous quip to Nancy Pelosi after her threat to charge him with contempt

Non sequitur: “No one cares more about border security than those of us who live there. … We are a nation of laws. That border must be respected. … This president is turning [migrants] away at the legal ports of entry, forcing them to cross in-between those ports of entry. Not only do those walls not manage this situation, they also contribute to death and suffering.” —Beto O'Rourke

Intraparty infighting: “I will be damned if the same politicians who refused to act then come back today and say we need a ‘middle of the road’ approach to save our lives.” —Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Friendly fire: “Tell [AOC] to check the statements that I made and look at my record. She’ll find that nobody has been more consistent about taking on the environment and the Green Revolution than I have.” —Joe Biden

Braying Jenny: “I’ll probably never put my hand over my heart. I’ll probably never sing the national anthem again.” —U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe

Non compos mentis: “At its heart, these attempts to wield control over sex come from a desire to reassert total control over our bodies and our reproductive rights. But really, it’s about power. Whoever controls reproduction has power. … A #SexStrike is a way to target straight, cisgender men so they may feel the physical consequences of our reproductive rights being systematically eliminated.” —Alyssa Milano and Waleisah Wilson

Alpha Jackass: “I had an abortion when I was young, and it was the best decision I have ever made. Both for me, and for the baby I didn’t want, and wasn’t ready for, emotionally, psychologically and financially. So many children will end up in foster homes. So many lives ruined. So very cruel. … If Georgia becomes inundated with children who are unwanted or unable to be cared for, it will be hard to find great fostering for them all.” —actress Jameela Jamil

And last… “I think at this point I’ve heard every attempt at a coherent argument for abortion, and I still haven’t heard one that makes any logical sense. I try to find the good arguments for the other side of an issue so I can know what to say to them. With abortion, they just don’t exist.” —Allie Beth Stuckey
