IN BRIEF
Hillary Continues to Absolve Bill of Any #MeToo Guilt1

Thomas Gallatin

The biggest apologist for Bill Clinton’s record of sexual misconduct has been and remains to this day Hillary Clinton; she’s still standing by her man. In an interview on CBS’s “Sunday Morning,” Hillary was asked by Tony Dokoupil, “In retrospect, do you think Bill should’ve resigned in the wake of the Monica Lewinsky scandal?” “Absolutely not,” Hillary responded. Dokoupil then asked, “It wasn’t an abuse of power?” Clinton shot back, “No. No.” Once again Dokoupil pressed the issue, noting, “There are people who look at the incident of the ‘90s and they say, 'A president of the United States cannot have a consensual relationship with an intern; the power imbalance is too great.’” “Who was an adult,” Hillary interjected.

Wait a second — wasn’t the #MeToo movement ignited precisely because of instances of powerful men using their positions of influence to take advantage of women in vulnerable positions beneath them? The Clinton/Lewinsky scandal is a textbook example — she was a 22-year-old intern and he was the 49-year-old president of the United States. And that’s not to mention Bill’s even more horrific record when he was governor of Arkansas. In fact, according to National Review’s Katherine Timpf, a total of 14 women2 have made accusations of sexual misconduct against Bill — anything from groping to exposure to actual rape. Hillary’s retort is a flailing attempt to distort the record on her husband’s abuse by suggesting that Bill isn’t guilty since Lewinsky was an adult at the time.

This is the same Hillary who has often criticized women who declined to vote Democrat, and more specifically failed to vote for her. Recall back in March when Hillary blamed her loss on women3 who succumbed to “pressure to vote the way that your husband, your boss, your son, whoever, believes you should.” Aren’t these women adults who are able to make their own decisions?

Meanwhile, Hillary’s record as a champion for women is little more than a facade. Over the years, she has repeatedly castigated and belittled women who dared to come forward with their stories of Bill’s abuse, calling them “sluts” and “whores.” Back in 1992, when allegations of Bill’s sexual misconduct surfaced during his presidential run, Hillary reportedly said, “Who is going to find out? These women are trash. Nobody’s going to believe them.” So much for her more recent contention, “To every survivor of sexual assault… You have the right to be believed.”

Hillary has demonstrated once again that she is a purely partisan animal. She is only interested in listening to women whose stories are politically expedient to her own desired aims, not the cause of actual justice. How else can she declare with a straight face that Justice Brett Kavanaugh is unfit for the Supreme Court due to the mere existence of unsubstantiated and refuted allegations from over 35 years ago, while at the same time insisting that the corroborated allegations against Bill are essentially insignificant?

Arizona: The Patriot vs. the Pretender4

Nate Jackson

If Democrats want to capture the Senate in November, winning the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Jeff Flake5 is paramount. But that race took a wild turn in recent days as past comments from Democrat Rep. Kyrsten Sinema have surfaced. Sinema has held a slight lead in most polls, but her mouth might cost her the race against Rep. Martha McSally, a retired Air Force combat pilot6.

The Washington Examiner reports7 on emails of hers from 2002, when she was a community organizer for the Arizona Alliance for Peaceful Justice. “When AAPJ attended May Day (sponsored by the Phoenix Anarchist Coalition), we knew that their guidelines differ from ours,” Sinema said in an email to a fellow protester. “They are okay with weapons and property destruction in some instances, and so those of us who chose to attend the event knew that it would be inappropriate to ask someone to not destroy property or to carry a weapon.”

To Sinema, destroying private property is fine … for a cause.

In 2003, Sinema opined on whether people could join the Taliban to fight against American Armed Forces Patriots, “Fine. I don’t care if you want to do that, go ahead.” She co-founded a group in the early 2000s to resist “U.S. terror in Iraq and the Middle East,” and the group depicted8 U.S. soldiers as skeletons with machine guns.

So while McSally was fighting for her country, flying combat missions in the Gulf War, Sinema was giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

Sinema also evidently thinks Arizonans are “deplorables,” to borrow a word. She has declared Arizona to be the “meth lab of democracy,” and said, “Over the past several years, people would watch what’s going on in Arizona and be like, ‘Damn, those people are crazy,’” On another occasion, she told leftist activists in Texas, “I want to talk to you about some of the things that I think that you can do to stop your state from becoming Arizona.” It’s probably not a good idea to habitually make your state the butt of your jokes when you’re running to represent your state in the Senate.

FEATURED ANALYSIS
‘Disappearing’ Dr. Kermit Gosnell26

Arnold Ahlert

“There was blood on the floor. A stench of urine filled the air. A flea-infested cat was wandering through the facility, and there were cat feces on the stairs. Semi-conscious women scheduled for abortions were moaning in the waiting room or the recovery room, where they sat on dirty recliners covered with blood-stained blankets.” —what FBI and Pennsylvania Department of Health officials stated27 they saw upon raiding the abortion clinic of Dr. Kermit Gosnell on Feb. 18, 2010

“Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer” premiered last Friday. It chronicles28 the shockingly true story of a man convicted of murder for killing babies born alive following abortions, involuntary manslaughter for the death of 41-year-old Nepalese refugee Karnamaya Mongar following a botched abortion procedure, and several felony counts for performing late-term abortions past the 24 week gestation limit imposed by Pennsylvania law. In 2013, Gosnell was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Like the vastly under-reported29 story it was when it occurred, the same American leftists and their media allies who view abortion as something akin to a religious sacrament hope the movie suffers a similar fate.

In fact, leftists have attempted to abet that scenario. Indie movie producers Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney, who turned their own best-selling28 book into the movie, were banned from raising funds for it at crowdsourcing giant Kickstarter. National Public Radio refused to run sponsored ads for it because organization’s legal department laughingly asserted that describing Gosnell as an “abortionist” in those ads violated the network’s “value-neutral” agenda. And Facebook, which routinely denies accusations of bias against conservatives, banned advertising for it altogether.

After Kickstarter declined the use of its platform, McAleer and McElhinney turned to crowdfunding site IndieGoGo. The “crowd” responded30 with a record-setting $2.37 million.

Yet they still weren’t out of the woods. Despite the book’s popularity — conspicuously ignored31 by The New York Times, which refused to list it on its bestseller nonfiction list, even when it was No. 3 on Amazon’s bestseller list, and No. 1 on its “Hot New Release” list — some actors walked off the project. Film distributors remained hesitant. “Each one would say: ‘Great, important film — just too controversial for us,’” Phelim McAleer stated32 in an interview with The Federalist. “It’s been one thing after another.”

And after finally securing national release last year, Judge Jeffrey Minehart, who presided over Gosnell’s trial, filed a suit to block its release, insisting33 he was portrayed “as a villain in their story of the righteous versus the wicked.”

“All we can say about that is that it was resolved,” McElhinney tells The Federalist. “Unfortunately, that’s all we can say.”

In an interview with Life News, film director Nick Searcy, who also directed “The Shape of Water,” took issue34 with the idea that the film is an anti-abortion screed. “We all agreed we did not want to make a polemical movie,” he said. “I have always despised and rejected movies that tried to tell me what to think about a given story, rather than just telling me the story and letting me decide.”

So what kind of movie did he make? “We did not make a pro-life movie or a pro-choice movie,” he explained. “We made a movie about a crime that happened. No matter what side you are on, you can watch this movie.”

Perhaps. But pro-abortion leftists have long disdained35 anti-abortionists’ efforts to show graphic images of the procedure, or those of fetal development to the public, and/or ultrasounds36 to pregnant women. And when activists David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt caught Planned Parenthood executives on tape discussing the buying and selling of fetal parts, leftists were not only outraged, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra filed37 felony charges against them for filming people without their permission. The charges were ultimately dismissed38, but the message is clear: When the topic is abortion, leftists will pursue any means necessary to prevent the public from becoming fully informed.

Even more so with regard to Gosnell. In a 2013 column entitled “What I Saw at the Gosnell Trial,” J.D. Mullane revealed39 that what happened at Gosnell’s clinic transcended the worst of Hollywood horror films. “Tiny severed feet and hands stored in jars over a sink in the ‘procedure’ room,” and babies who survived an abortion, only to have their spinal cords severed and their brains removed by suction, were “placed in a waste bin for disposal,” he reported.

That procedure is euphemistically referred to as a “snip.” Stephen Massof, one of Gosnell’s fellow butchers, testifying at the trial in exchange for a plea bargain where he was charged with “only” two instances of third-degree murder, described40 it as “literally a beheading — it is separating the brain from the body.”

The movie pulls no punches, depicting41 severed feet stored in jars in the freezer, medical waste bags filled with fetal remains, and a quick look at the late-term aborted fetuses recovered from Gosnell’s abortion factory, lined up on an autopsy table awaiting further examination. Much of the screen play is pulled word-for-word from grand jury testimony and the trial itself, including a warning from the judge to the prosecutor not to politicize abortion rights in any way — even as a scene shows the state health inspector admitting that, despite complaints, Gosnell’s clinic remained unreviewed for 15 years because the state governor’s office did exactly that: Abortion clinics were explicitly exempted from scrutiny.

The film also shows something just as damning. “The movie is as much an exposé of the media as it is of abortion,” McElhinney stated42 in an interview with NewsBusters last June. “The media who ignored the story will have to explain to millions of people who will see the movie why they censored this story.”

No, they won’t. A mainstream media that avoided the trial for 56 days until public outcry and multiple letters from House members virtually forced their hand, will remain as conspicuously uninterested as ever. Philadelphia News reports43 that reviews by mainstream movie critics are virtually “non-existent,” and that the film’s availability is geography-based. “It’s downright easy to go see the Gosnell movie if you live in places like Texas or Alabama, while there’s literally only one movie screen in all of Manhattan showing the film,” it reveals.

Manhattan is part of New York City — where more black American babies are currently aborted44 than born.

In a 2011 column illuminating the societal consequences described by Daniel Moynihan as “defining deviancy down,” Manon McKinnon wrote something just as compelling, asserting45 that deviancy and normalcy have “swapped places.” Thus, the bet here is “Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer” will remain under the radar. Not because it should, but because in a morally adrift nation where the 60 million abortions performed since Roe v. Wade became the law of the land is celebrated as “reproductive freedom,” it must.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Jeff Jacoby: “More than ever I admire those celebrities who steadfastly resist the temptation (or the hectoring) to talk politics. There are still some of them, including Bruno Mars, Mark Wahlberg, Reba McEntire, and Josh Duhamel. They follow in the footsteps of one of the greatest entertainers in American history. At the peak of his long career, Elvis Presley’s influence on popular culture was unparalleled, but about politics he would say nothing. A classic illustration occurred during a pre-concert press conference at Madison Square Garden in 1972. It was at the height of the antiwar movement, and Presley, an Army veteran, was asked for his thoughts on the Vietnam War protests. ‘Honey, I’d just as soon keep my own personal views about that to myself,’ he answered modestly. ‘I’m just an entertainer and I’d rather not say.’ Faced with the pressure to get political, Elvis knew how to shake it off. Would that could still be said about Taylor Swift.”

SHORT CUTS

The Gipper: “We are too great a nation to limit ourselves to small dreams. We are not, as some would have us believe, doomed to an inevitable decline. I do not believe in a fate that will fall on us no matter what we do. I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing.”

Braying Jenny: “The blue wave is African-American. It is white. It is Latino. It is Asian-Pacific Islander. It is made up of those who’ve been told that they are not worthy of being here. It is comprised of those who are documented and undocumented.” —Georgia Democrat gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams

The BIG Lie: “The census is supposed to get a full and accurate count of the U.S. population. By weaponizing the census, this Administration is violating the idea that everyone counts.” —Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) on a question asking about respondents’ citizenship

Hot air: “Climate change is real, it is being driven by human activity, it is happening right now. These are facts; they are not in dispute. Our scientists know it, our businesses know it, the world knows it, and the American people know it. But, too many senators on the other side of the aisle just put their head in the sand. … If we would do more on climate change, we’d have fewer of these hurricanes and other types of storms. Everyone knows that, except a few.” —Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY)

Civility: “There are babies being ripped away from their parents at the southern border in the name of the American people. Make no mistake, this is part of an evil plot by the Trump administration, and it has to stop.” —Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (D-NJ)

Non Compos Mentis: “[Donald Trump] is just trashing American values the way he talks about people, the way he makes fun of people, the way he denigrates folks. I got to tell you, I think there is a method to his madness because he wants you to get down in the mosh pit with him.” —Joe Biden, just days after Democrats’ brutal character assassination of Brett Kavanagh

Dezinformatziya: “President Trump says ‘Robert E. Lee was a great general’ during Ohio rally, calling the Confederate leader ‘incredible.’” —NBC News, which TWO DAYS LATER issued a correction: “An earlier tweet misidentified the general President Trump described as ‘incredible’ at a rally in Ohio. It was Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, not Gen. Robert E. Lee.”

And last… “If the Left will accept [Sen. Elizabeth] Warren as ‘Native American’ because she might have had one Native American in her family tree sometime between 180 and 300 years ago, then they have embraced the end of identity politics. By that measure almost everyone in America is a minority.” —Matt Walsh
