THE FOUNDATION

“He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.” —Thomas Paine (1791)

TOP RIGHT HOOKS

Both Candidates Attack Gold Star Families1

Two presidential candidates. Two incredibly stupid things said about Gold Star military families. So let’s compare.

At the Democrat Convention, Khizr Khan, the father of a soldier killed in Iraq, gave a speech in which he directed this to Donald Trump: “You have sacrificed nothing and no one.” Khan also asserted that Trump wouldn’t have even let his son into the country. Khan is a Muslim, and his wife stood behind him wearing a head covering. That’s where Trump first focused his attention, responding, “He was very emotional and probably looked like a nice guy to me. His wife, if you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say, she probably — maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say.” Trump then launched into some talking points about terrorism. Challenged on the sacrifice question, Trump first asked, “Did Hillary’s scriptwriters write it?” Then he pointed to the sacrifices he’s made like … creating jobs and working for a Vietnam memorial. Ok then. In another venue, Trump insisted that Khan had “no right to stand in front of millions of people and claim I have never read the Constitution.”

“Here’s a handy rule of life,” says2 Iraq veteran David French. “Always honor Gold Star families. Always.” Indeed, if Trump wants to be the commander in chief, he’s going to have to do better than attacking Gold Star families, policy disagreements notwithstanding. Given his history of declaring that the military will obey him3 even on illegal orders, he has a long way to go. But that’s what you get from a man who speaks just about everything that pops into his head, with little or no filter.
That’s bad, but Hillary Clinton’s calculated lies are far worse. Pat Smith, the mother of Benghazi KIA Sean Smith, spoke at the Republican convention, and again reminded the country that Clinton lied to her face about the cause of the attack. Addressing the families in 2012, Clinton said, “We’ve seen the heavy assault on our post in Benghazi that took the lives of those brave men. We’ve seen rage and violence directed at American embassies over an awful internet video that we had nothing to do with.”

Clinton lied and has been lying about her lies ever since, all while accusing Smith of lying. Over the weekend, she responded to Smith’s RNC speech, saying, “I don’t hold any ill feeling for someone who in that moment may not fully recall everything that was or wasn’t said.” Just because Clinton is an expert in reiterating, “I don’t recall,” doesn’t mean Pat Smith or the other family members of the slain don’t remember what Clinton told them.

Worse than the lies are the deaths — Clinton is responsible for the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi. And worse still is the fact that the Obama-Clinton foreign policy team is to blame for hundreds of thousands of deaths4 and general chaos in the Middle East.

Trump says dumb things with regularity, while Clinton is cold, deceitful, and based on her own record is utterly disqualified from serving as commander in chief. Welcome to the 2016 election.

A Tale of Two Ships5

The Navy has a long history of honoring great Americans by naming ships after them. Recently the Navy endowed this honor on retired Marine Col. Harvey Barnum, a Medal of Honor recipient. Barnum was one of only two MoH recipients to be denied a ceremony at the White House because of all the negativity surrounding the Vietnam War at the time. It’s fitting that the USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr. be named in his honor, especially recognizing his acts of valor in serving our nation in the field of battle.

Conversely, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, continuing the Obama administration’s homosexual constituency appeasement, announced another ship naming that is disgraceful. A John-Lewis class oiler will be named for Harvey Milk, a Korean War Navy vet and homosexual activist. Milk was murdered in 1978 in San Francisco, and became a martyr for the homosexual movement. In 2009, Barack Obama posthumously bestowed upon Milk the highest civilian award — the Presidential Medal of Freedom — and in 2014, had the USPS issue a postage stamp his honor. What Obama did not mention at either ceremony is that Milk was a predatory pedophile, and his relationship with young boys was documented by his homosexual biographer and close friend Randy Shilts, who died of AIDS in 1994.

Two ships. One named in honor a genuine heroic Patriot, and the other to honor a homosexual’s activism. Obama, Hillary Clinton and their leftist cadres — none of whom have ever spent a day serving our country with honor, or in uniform — keep leaving their putrid stench wherever it will create the greatest offense.

Voters and the Obama Malaise6

If it feels like listening to a broken record each time disappointing economic numbers come out, it’s because, yes, you’ve heard this disappointment before. It appears to be the new normal under Barack Obama. “The U.S. economy expanded less than forecast in the second quarter after a weaker start to the year than previously estimated,” Bloomberg reports7. While surveyed economists predicted growth of an unimpressive 2.5%, it actually clocked in at a downright anemic 1.2% — and that followed just 0.8% growth in the first quarter, revised down from 1.1%. Furthermore, Bloomberg reports, “The new breakdown shows a more pronounced slowdown in the economy heading into 2016. The year-over-year growth rate cooled from 3.3 percent in last year’s first quarter to 1.9 percent in the final three months of 2015, rather than the previous downshift from 2.9 percent to 2 percent.”

Obama’s streak of sub-3% economic growth continues. He is the only president in U.S. history to never have annual growth over 3%. Naturally, he blames George W. Bush. But it was Democrats who sowed the seeds8 of the 2008 economic crisis.

Yet Nancy Pelosi argues that anyone voting Republican is doing so in spite of themselves. “I think that, so many times … non-college-educated white males have voted Republican,” she said this week. “They voted against their own economic interests because of guns, because of gays, and because of God, the three G’s, God being the woman’s right to choose.” The economic numbers would argue otherwise.

And with tepid growth like this it’s no wonder Hillary Clinton is so confused. In her coronation speech9 Thursday night, she at once lamented the pathetic economy and said Obama and Biden don’t get enough credit for saving it: “Too many people haven’t had a pay raise since the crash. There’s too much inequality. Too little social mobility. … Now, I don’t think President Obama and Vice President Biden get the credit they deserve for saving us from the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes. Our economy is so much stronger than when they took office. … But none of us can be satisfied with the status quo. … I’ve heard from so many of you who feel like the economy just isn’t working. Some of you are frustrated — even furious. And you know what? You’re right. It’s not yet working the way it should.”

So which is it? Economic malaise, or incredible and underappreciated prosperity? We think voters know the answer. The question is whether they’ll vote for more of the same.

FEATURED RIGHT ANALYSIS
Dick Morris Corrects the Record on Hillary Clinton18

Dick Morris is a nationally recognized political campaign adviser, analyst and author. He was the senior political adviser to Bill Clinton19 before and after his occupation of the White House. He was campaign manager of Clinton’s 1996 re-election, and the architect of his successful “triangulation” rhetorical ruse. Clinton’s communications director George Stephanopoulos said of Morris, “No single person had more power over [Bill Clinton].”

This week, in a message entitled “What Bill Left Out20, Morris corrected the record regarding Clinton’s glowing remarks21 about Hillary Clinton22, her personal attributes and professional achievements. Morris’s insights into the Clintons are priceless.

What follows is a transcript of Morris’s comments:

"Bill Clinton talked at length about Hillary’s idealistic work in college and law school, but he omits that she was defending the Black Panthers who killed security guards; they were on trial in New Haven. She monitored the trial while she was in law school to find evidence that could be grounds for reversal in the event they were convicted.

"That summer she went to work for the True-Haft (SP) law firm in CA, headed by True Haft who is the head of the CA Communist Party and that’s when she got involved with Saul Alinsky, who became something of a mentor for the rest of her life.

"Then Bill says that she went off to Massachusetts and he went to Arkansas, and eventually Hillary followed her heart to join him in Arkansas. He omits that she went to work for the Watergate Committee and was fired from that job for taking home evidence and hiding documents that they needed in the impeachment inquiry. Then she took the DC Bar exam and flunked it, she went to Arkansas because that is the only bar exam she could pass.

"He talked about how in the 1970’s she took all kinds of pro-bono cases to defend women and children. In her memoirs, she cites one which was a custody case and that’s it. In fact, in 1975 she represented a guy accused of raping a 14-year-old girl and got him off by claiming the girl had had fantasies of sex with an older man. In 1980 she gave an interview about it and she joked that she knew the guy was guilty but got him off anyway.

"Then Bill discusses Hillary’s legal career at the Rose Law firm. He doesn’t mention that she made partner when he was elected governor and was only hired when he got elected as attorney general.

"He makes as if it was a public service job — it wasn’t. Her main job was to get state business, and she got tens-of-millions of dollars of state business, then hid her participation and the fees by taking an extra share of non-state business to compensate for the fees on state business that she brought in. Her other job was to call the state banking commissioner any time one of her banks got into trouble to get them off.

"Bill speaks at length how Hillary was a mother, juggling career and family, taking Chelsea to soccer games and stuff — that’s non-sense. Hillary was a mother but Chelsea in the Arkansas governor’s mansion had a staff of nannies and agents to drive her around and people to be with her, and Hillary didn’t have to bother with any of that. All of that was paid for by the state.

"He says she became the warrior in chief over the family finances and that was true, and the result is she learned how to steal.

"She accepted a $100,000 bribe from the poultry industry in return for Bill going easy on regulating them, despite new standards. Jim Blair, the poultry lobbyist, gave her $1,000 to invest in the Futures Market and lined up seven to eight other investors and their winnings were all deposited into Hillary’s account. She made $100,000 in a year and she was out. That essentially was a bribe.

”[She did] a phony real-estate deal for Jim McDougal and the Madison Bank to deceive the federal regulators by pretending someone else was buying the property. She was called before a grand jury in 1995 about that but, conveniently, the billing records were lost, couldn’t be found and there wasn’t proof that she worked on it.

“Bill talks about her work on the health care task force but doesn’t say the reason it didn’t pass was the task force was discredited because the meetings were all held in secret. A federal judge forced them open and fined the task force several hundred thousand dollars because of their secrecy.

"He says that after the health care bill failed in 1994, Hillary went to work on adopting each piece of it piecemeal — mainly health insurance for children.

"That is completely the opposite of the truth. The fact is when that bill failed, I called Hillary and I suggested that she support a proposal by Republican Bob Dole that we cover children, and she said, ‘We can’t just cover one part of this. You have to change everything or change nothing.’ Then in 1997 when I repeated that advice to Bill Clinton, we worked together to pass the Children’s Health Insurance Program. I found a lot of the money for that in the tobacco settlement that my friend Dick Scruggs was negotiating.

"Then Bill extols her record in the U.S. Senate. In fact, she did practically nothing. There were seven or eight bills that she introduced that passed; almost all of were symbolic — renaming a courthouse, congratulating a high school team on winning the championship. There was only one vaguely substantive bill, and that had a lot of co-sponsors of whom Hillary was just one.

"Then he goes to her record in the State Department and manages to tell that story without mentioning the word Benghazi, without mentioning her secret emails, without mentioning he was getting tens of millions — $220 million in speaking fees in return for favorable actions by the State Department.

"Also totally lacking in the speech was anything about the war on terror — terror is a word you don’t hear at the Democratic Convention.

"Bill says that Hillary passed tough sanctions on Iran for their nuclear program. The opposite is true.

"Every time a tough sanction bill was introduced by Senators Menendez or Kirk, Hillary would send Deputy Secretary Wendy Sherman to Capital Hill to testify against it and urge it not to pass, and it was over Hillary’s objections that those sanctions were put into place.

”[Liberal columnist] Maureen Dowd called the speech by Bill Clinton “air brushed.”

“It was a hell of a lot more than that — it was fiction.

(Also see Morris’s comments after Clinton’s DNC acceptance speech23. "It’s strategy and message will be interdicted by reality at every turn. … She basically has no message. … Her entire campaign is, ‘I’m a woman and I am running against Donald Trump. … She bean her speech by saying let’s compromise and work together. Is there any woman in the world less likely to compromise?”)

OPINION IN BRIEF

Peggy Noonan: “The Democratic Party is turning left. It’s not about ‘Bernie’ now, and his followers are not going away. It is about the political impulses of the party’s young, which is to say its future. They are part of a tide of the passionate, the ideological and the underinformed. They have no idea what socialism is or what it has done in the past to great nations, and they appear to want it. I guess we’ll have to go through that argument again. They have already pushed Mrs. Clinton left and, should she become president, will push her further, against her wishes. But she has a new base to keep close. This shift is a real historical development.”

SHORT CUTS

The Gipper: “We who live in free market societies believe that growth, prosperity and ultimately human fulfillment, are created from the bottom up, not the government down. Only when the human spirit is allowed to invent and create, only when individuals are given a personal stake in deciding economic policies and benefitting from their success — only then can societies remain economically alive, dynamic, progressive, and free.”

For the record: “As I listened to Barack Obama’s speech the other night, I noticed he didn’t have any domestic accomplishments to brag about after 2010. Republicans had stopped him and collected more than 900 state-level seats and swept both houses of Congress in two wave elections that brought more limited-government Republicans to Washington than have been here in our lifetime. But because voters demand purity, and politicians keep promising and failing to deliver it, the entire project felt like failure. So primary voters blew it all up.” —David Harsanyi

Braying Jackass: “In my first year as [Virginia] governor, my legislature decided to put … ‘marriage is between a man and woman’ issues on the ballot and the more I listened to the reason they wanted to do it the more I realized I can’t be with those guys, because they’re doing it to try to make the state a hostile place for people I care about.” —Tim Kaine on why he flip-flopped on same-sex marriage

Subterfuge: “I think what the [Supreme] Court said about there being an individual right [to bear arms] is in line with constitutional thinking. And I said in the convention, I’m not looking to repeal the Second Amendment. I’m not looking to take people’s guns away, but I am looking for more support for the reasonable efforts that need to be undertaken to keep guns out of the wrong hands. … That right, like every other of our rights, our First Amendment rights, every right that we have is open to and even subject to reasonable regulations.” —Hillary Clinton

The BIG lie: “Director [James] Comey said that my answers were truthful, and what I’ve said is consistent with what I have told the American people, that there were decisions discussed and made to classify retroactively certain of the emails. I was communicating with over 300 people in my emailing. They certainly did not believe and had no reason to believe that what they were sending was classified. … I take classification seriously.” —Hillary Clinton continuing to peddle lies regarding classified emails29

Late-night humor: “Hillary Clinton gave her big speech at the Democratic Convention [Thursday] evening. And there was an awkward moment when she finished the speech and said, ‘Now where’s my check?’” —Conan O'Brien
