Title: New on the Shelves

“Heretic” by Bernard Cornwell
I just finished this novel.  I think it is only availbe in hardback, now - but should be available in paperback soon.
I’ve found nothing about the author indicating whether he is a Christian or not, but other that some objectionable language and a lot of violence, I found it an agreeable depiction of the times.
It is a story of an Englishman in the mid 1300’s who finds himself in a half-hearted search for the Holy Grail, and in his search becomes excommunicated by the church.  It ends in a classic battle, shortened somewhat by the onslaught of “black death” (the plague).  Thomas (the book’s main character) is an archer by trade – he is basically a mercenary and his skills as an archer are second to none.  It is a story of battle, love, survival and “the church”.  It reflects how, when there was only one church, ultimately all was controlled by the church – regardless of which side of the battle field one stood.
Cornwell is known for historical accuracy in his novels, and this is no exception.  The language and violence, I believe, are a direct depiction of how those in those times would have spoken and reacted.  If you are a student of history I believe you will find the book very interesting – particularly in the descriptions of the various armors worn by the knights, and the selection of arrowheads the archers used to penetrate the defenses.  It is also an admirable study of the 13th century – including the people, the hierarchy and church influence.
On a scale of 1 to 10 – I would rate the book a 7.  Of course – I really enjoy historical literature.
Happy reading!

I don't know if this book is new or not, but there is a book called JOHN 1:12 I bought at Barnes and Noble. The book traces several months of bizarre supernatural events that happened in Dallas. It was documented in a journal. It's a fascinating read. ;D

Has anyone read the first book of the "Binding of the Blade" series? I'd like to read it (its supposed to be Christian-themed fantasy, like Middle Earth) but it isn't at our library and I don't wanna buy it.  ;D

Also, "Buried Alive" is an interesting read; a real-life exploration of neanderthal evidence by a Christian scientist.
