Title: Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Broken on February 20, 2004, 08:45:47 PM I'm not trying to start a debate...
I was just wondering who here has things like crosses, religious rings, T-shirts, posters, pictures, that sort of thing. Adornments, I think I'd call them (thats a nice word, eh?) So what have you got? ::Emma:: Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Early57 on February 20, 2004, 09:11:18 PM I have a Bumper sticker
Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Whitehorse on February 21, 2004, 12:32:13 AM A fish, several crosses, etc. (Jewelry.) I don't generally use the Tshirts, but I did receive a couple as gifts so I do wear those. And of course my wedding ring has a lot of religious significance in its design, although no one knows that unless I explain it to them.
Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Broken on February 21, 2004, 09:51:13 AM For myself, I have a ring with "Jesus, keep me safe" written on it in Russian, a cross made out of icons (also from Russia - my dad has been visiting there a lot lately), and my grandmother's rosary.
Oh, and a plain cross on a necklace that I sometimes wear. Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Whitehorse on February 21, 2004, 11:38:15 AM That's neat-I like the idea of having an inscribed ring like that. That would be a good thing for our guys in the military to have, too.
Here in the sixties during the Vietnam war, people were engraving and distributing prayer bracelets with the names of prisoners of war. About 7 years ago a friend of mine showed me hers. I can't remember where she got it from; she was still wearing it. Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Tibby on February 21, 2004, 12:37:55 PM I’m not one for Christian Commercialism. I do own a hand made cross a friend gave me, which is my trademark necklace. Other then that, I’m clena of any kind of “Christian” apparel.
To be brutally honest, I think it is kind of tacky... :-\ Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: sincereheart on February 21, 2004, 01:17:07 PM I do have one tee that has a picture of the knees of jeans that are worn out that says; "Pray without Ceasing" that I wear with.... you guessed it; my favorite pair of jeans that have the knees missing! ;D
Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Symphony on February 21, 2004, 08:33:13 PM Wow, Whitehorse, a POW bracelet. I sure remember them.
I tend to agree with Tibby here. The commercialism. I don't wear much of any adornment--no "signs" whatsoever. I'm thinking about onestarfisher's posts here though. 'Really liking her ideas. And, I'm casual most all the time. So just painting short slogans, or a scripture verse, or a reference would be simple, tastefully hand-lettered. No cutesy ornamentation, or adornment; but slogans that just say something. I like Early57's verse a whole lot, from Luke 2: "Unto us a child is given..." Maybe the whole verse. It doesn't really "challenge"--at least confrontationally--certainly doesn't judge or condemn; on the contrary, suggests instead a nice "ray" of sunshine. I might just paint that on my clothes. So far I'm really liking that idea. But I'm self-employed, so I wear what I like. If you're an employee, it's a little different. NIce question, though, Broken. Thank you. Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Gracey on February 21, 2004, 08:45:43 PM I wear one of these, when it goes with my outfit ---> †
That's about it, though. I do have my dad's rosary as a rememberance, a token, but that's not what I consider jewellery at all. It's just something that was dad's....didn't even mean anything to him. Gracey Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Broken on February 21, 2004, 08:50:35 PM I quite agree about the commercialism - some of the stuff I've seen in the Christian bookshop near me....ugh. Thats why the stuff I've got tends to be unusual/good cause. In other words: the money goes to an individual church rather than to a commercial company - I'm all in favour of giving money to little churches, which is why I buy so many bookmarks and bits and pieces off them. Thats where my icons and that ring I have came from - a small church in Moscow. Apparently.
Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: NateyCakes on February 21, 2004, 09:11:12 PM I have a couple great Tshirts that praise the Lord on it. I dont have any jewelry per say. Although, that ring sounds very neat. I have 2 Bumper stickers (not very big) on the back of my car that says Jesus <//>< and another one that says: Jesus The Way, The Truth, The Life.
Im not into the whole crucifictions necklaces or wall plaques. Thats just me. Like some of the other post, there is too much Jesus commercializing (just my opinon). I refer to Keith Greens Book No Compromise when he said ppl were just using the Lords name to do nothing more then sell items like ashtrays with the Jesus Saves & even condoms that says Jesus saves! I mean to me, that is sick. I do like the WWJD bracelets. I enjoy seeing the young kids wearing them in school & Not being embarrassed to love Jesus. But I do agree, some of the items have gone a little far. Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Early57 on February 21, 2004, 09:48:03 PM I have a tee that has HeavenlyDivineSon to look like a HarlyDavidson Tee. Sleeves are missing and there is the Vee that I cut into the neck.
Another Tee is the BaseBall player pointing to the fence and saying "This ones for the Lord" Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Broken on February 21, 2004, 10:58:35 PM The reason I'm into wall stuff is just because I really like the icons - they're beautiful, some of them. I used to have a print of that wonderful Dali painting, Christ of St John of the Cross - just amazing. I saw the painting once, and its better than the print because its enormous.
I'd been looking for a ring for a while, because I've looked at the T-shirts and all that, but I don't like the ones I've seen. They tend to be tacky (maybe its just the UK?) and remind me of the vicars with guitars (shudder) or very catholic and so just look fashionable. Which is beside the point. But a ring, I thought looked good - but I never found one. My dad quite by chance came back with a nice one - no big sticky out crosses or fishes that make you look like you're wearing knuckle-dusters, very simple. And a conversation piece ;D If, by some miracle, I get a digital camera that works, I'll show you a picture sometime. Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Symphony on February 22, 2004, 01:18:14 PM ...vicars with guitars (shudder)... hehe. where's Tibby, here?? ;D Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: JudgeNot on February 22, 2004, 09:09:12 PM I asked for a silver cross on a silver chain for Christmas but didn't get one. :(
I once considered having a cross tattooed over my heart - but then, since Jesus is already in my heart, I decided it was repetitious. :) I have a fish on my truck. :) Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: grateful girl on February 24, 2004, 10:11:59 AM Ok, this may sound odd, but I have a Jesus action figure on my window sill above my bed. He has moveable arms which are always raised towards Heaven. I love this figure. However, I do believe it was being sold as a ...well..not joke, I refuse to believe that, but I don't think it was being marketed towards people who love Christ. I don't like that way that sounds but it's the only way to explain it. I bought it at Urban Outfitters.
I've bought my son several crosses and he always breaks the chains that they're on. I'm going to wait until he's a little older to give him his next one, he just turned 12. I myself cannot wear jewelry, it's very uncomfortable. If I could I'd wear a small cross around my neck. Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Shylynne on February 24, 2004, 10:19:37 AM Christian Commercialism?
Who coined that phrase? Someone run out of "christian" phrases so they had to make one up? Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Tibby on February 24, 2004, 02:37:13 PM I just did. Problem?
Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: Shylynne on February 24, 2004, 07:23:05 PM lol...no problem at all Tibby...I just never heard that expression before ;)

However, I do believe it was being sold as a ...well..not joke, I refuse to believe that, but I don't think it was being marketed towards people who love Christ. I don't like that way that sounds but it's the only way to explain it. I bought it at Urban Outfitters. I've seen them! I thought they were being sold as a joke as well, but when I picked up one and looked at the back, the advertising blurb didn't sound like they thought Jesus was funny. I mean, the "wash your sins away soap" and "nodding Jesus" are obviously meant to be funny, but the action figure didn't seem to be. Perhaps it is meant for children to play with? Though I have to admit to being fond of religious tack. For some reason, European Catholics do it the best. Only they would buy (not as a joke) a lighting-up waving Jesus statue! I once bought a friend of mine a dressyup Pope doll which he loved. I think that sort of thing is great. If I ever go to Spain or Rome I'm definitely going to get some, tack is good. I like a bit of humour in religion - and those types of tacky stuff are produced by believers for believers, they're not meant to be offensive. Quote I've bought my son several crosses and he always breaks the chains that they're on. I'm going to wait until he's a little older to give him his next one, he just turned 12. I myself cannot wear jewelry, it's very uncomfortable. If I could I'd wear a small cross around my neck. I've seen some necklace type things that have stronger chains that your son might prefer. Actually I think they're intended for men and boys, being chunky. I don't know where you'd get them though, depends where you are. The ones I've seen are made of pewter, a thick cross on a thick, metal chain or on a leather rope thing. I think they look nice, myself, and they're also of a similar style to the sort of jewellery boys and teenagers wear anyway. Title: Re:Christian Jewellery &tc Post by: grateful girl on February 25, 2004, 08:51:37 AM Hi Broken! Thanks so much for your suggestions. I just asked him if he would want one, if he liked gold, silver..etc. He said the metal didn't matter (great kid) and that he would like it to be small and wear it under his shirt. We're a very very conservative family when it comes to dress. My kids have never followed the trends of other children. This is one of many areas that I am blessed beyond what I could have thought possible. To see children in clothing that makes them so vulnerable makes me want to cry. I love that my children let me protect them, and this is one way I can.
I used to think every christian wore crosses (before I found the Lord) and was afraid to wear them. I would have been punished. I wonder if this is the reason why I can't wear any jewelry at all...the association. I hope this post is understandable, it's the first one this morning and I think I need more coffee! |
