Title: Pre Existance
Post by: Gayle on February 19, 2004, 05:02:51 PM
I am a fairly new Christian.  I attend church regulary and bible studies.  I was rasied sort of Morman, I mean that because my parents weren't active, but my mom still holds on to some of their beliefs.  I am trying to bring her to what the bible teaches.  She made a statement the other day that I couldn't back up yet.  She said that she believes we pre-existed in heaven as spirits before being born.  Can someone please help me with this?
thank you so much.
I am struggling with having the right answers to her questions at the times she asks me.

We were "FOREKNOWN" by God as in Romans 8:29. However, we did NOT exist because we are all born with a FALLEN nature. Our spirits are dead and it is ONLY thru the new birth that we are born again, regenerated, new creations in Christ, and capable of knowing God. The Mormons believe that God was once a human, married, and Jesus and satan are brothers I believe. No wonder they have problems with spiritual concepts such as you have raised. May God bless you as you witness to any Mormon.

Hope this helps. We were and are always on His mind. Read Ps 139 if you want a blessing, but don't wear socks.

Grace to you,

aw

Gayle:

Welcome to this forum. To answer your question, there is not one single Scripture to back up any such teaching as "we pre-existed in heaven as spirits" before being born. Spirits in Heaven are either angels or "the spirits of just men made perfect"  -- those who were justified by faith in Old Testament times and are now in heaven (Heb.12:23).  The context will reveal which one it is.

If your mother seriously wants the truth from the Bible, obtain a Strong's Concordance and look through every reference to "spriit" and "spirits".  You will not find any teaching regarding spirits of people existing in Heaven before birth and then being sent down to earth to take human form.

This Mormon teaching actually originated in the Kabbalah and Gnosticism, where they teach that spirits originate in God and then evolve back into God, which is exactly what Mormonism teaches.  It also teaches that Christ evolved into God, Adam evolved into God, etc. God the Father is supposed to be Adam, and according to them has a body of "flesh".

There's a good possibility that your mother does not really want the truth, since that would mean she would have to repent of all false teaching, including her beliefs as derived from Mormonism. If your mother is not clearly saved, then she simply needs the Gospel, not every reason why Mormonism is false. When the Gospel is presented from God's Word, the Holy Spirit convicts and convinces sinners of their need for a Saviour.  That's probably what she needs before anything else.

AMEN Sower

One should approach a situation in hopes to point out what is wrong but instead approach it as to educate.

Talk to you mom on what you learn through your study.  Come home from Church and tell her what a great time you had, what songs you sang, what books you learned.
Invite her to come with you on Sunday mornings.  Invite her to become a part of your life as Christ has become a part of yours.

Above all pray for your mother as you should pray for all in your family, saved or not.  Talk to your pastor and ask him to pray as well.  And be patient.  Remember that God does not work on our time but on His time.  Do not lose heart, but continue and be faithful.

I will pray for you and for your mother.  May God bless you and provide you with the wisdom and knowledge to help your mother.
