Title: The Holy Spirit Post by: Gaurav on October 12, 2009, 03:06:38 AM I am beginning to get a little concerned with regard to the Holy Spirit. Not at the spirit itself put the understanding people show towards it. I have recently left my gospel choir, because of family commitments. In this choir we sang a song with the words 'Holy Spirit we worship you.' Yet I have never read anyone worshipping the holy spirit in the bible. With some very limited study, I came to the conclusion that it is the Holy Spirit that allows us to have a relationship with God and worship him - finally, I concluded that the Holy Spirit should not be worshipped.
Perhaps I am going over board, but it seems that the church is beginning to lose its ability to discern and understand God's word. Surely if we don't act in accordance to the word of God, then this would allow us to follow trends that I believe are not from God e.g. Toronto blessing. Please discussion your ideas here. I may not agree with them, as I am asking God to help me discern what I read here but anything you do write, please back up with scripture - if you can. First, I want to say that this is a worthy topic of discussion. It addresses the foundational question of "Who is God?" What does it mean when a Christian says that they love and serve God? The answer to the first and most important question is: 1) God the Father; 2) God the Son; 3) God the Holy Spirit. This is who Almighty God - the Godhead is. They are unique, but the The Three Holy Ones are One. Accepting and understanding this basic but precious truth makes it possible to understand much more than just God's Plan of Salvation. 1 John 5:1-13 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. The above portion of Scripture speaks volumes and it is worthy of diligent study. Understanding this portion of Scripture will help one to understand many other portions of Scripture. Hi Gaurav, I believe you are right, the Holy Spirit should not be worshiped, but the Holy Spirit is not an “it”. He is a person who can teach and comfort (and even be offended). However, He never calls attention to Himself, but He testifies of Jesus. (1 John 5:6-8) When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. John 16:13-15 Jesus told us to worship the Father. (John 4;23) Jesus said He did not speak His own words, but what He heard the Father saying. (John 8:28)(John 5:19) He told us not to ask Him for anything, but to pray directly to the Father. (Mat 6:9)(John 16:23) The Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus and communicates the things of God, but He does not seek glory for Himself – only for the Father and the Son. I believe (know) the Holy Spirit speaks to us today, but whatever He says is always in agreement with the words or intent of Scripture. It’s my opinion (and I think Scripture backs me up) that when people worship the Holy Spirit, it probably causes Him grief, since it does not glorify the Father or the Son. I find it interesting the God does not correct His children more concerning the errors we practice. Since we have the Scripture, there will be many things to account for. Now this is a fascinating question. One I have never heard before. Of course that is not saying much, but still it is new to me. My first thought was , sure why not and then the answer came quickly. It is the HS who will guide us in all truth and knowledge and will always point us to Jesus. John 16:12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. Academic discussions of the Holy Trinity can get confusing, and it's sometimes difficult to try and understand what someone is saying. The easy part would be saying something like, "I love and trust Almighty God". A statement like that from me would refer to the Holy Trinity - my Heavenly Father, my Lord and Saviour, and my Guide and Comforter who lives in my heart. We should all know how much God likes for us to come to Him in childlike faith.
