THE FOUNDATION

"Shame on the men who can court exemption from present trouble and expense at the price of their own posterity's liberty!" --Samuel Adams

Obama and Stephanopoulos
EDITORIAL EXEGESIS

"President Obama didn't make much news on his round of five Sunday talk shows ... with one notable exception. The President revealed a great deal about his philosophy of government and how he defines a tax increase. It turns out the President thinks a health-care tax is not a tax if he thinks the tax is for your own good. ... Mr. Obama was asked by [ABC] host George Stephanopoulos about the 'individual mandate.' Under Max Baucus's Senate bill that Mr. Obama supports, everyone would be required to buy health insurance or else pay a penalty as high as $3,800 a year. Mr. Stephanopoulos posed the obvious question about this kind of coercion when 'the government is forcing people to spend money, fining you if you don't [buy insurance]. ... How is that not a tax?' 'Well, hold on a second, George,' Mr. Obama replied. 'Here's what's happening. You and I are both paying $900, on average -- our families -- in higher premiums because of uncompensated care. Now what I've said is that if you can't afford health insurance, you certainly shouldn't be punished for that. That's just piling on. If, on the other hand, we're giving tax credits, we've set up an exchange, you are now part of a big pool, we've driven down the costs, we've done everything we can and you actually can afford health insurance, but you've just decided, you know what, I want to take my chances. And then you get hit by a bus and you and I have to pay for the emergency room care, that's...' 'That may be,' Mr. Stephanopoulos responded, 'but it's still a tax increase.' (In fact, uncompensated care accounts for about only 2.2% of national health spending today, but that's another subject.) Mr. Obama: 'No. That's not true, George. The -- for us to say that you've got to take a responsibility to get health insurance is absolutely not a tax increase. What it's saying is, is that we're not going to have other people carrying your burdens for you anymore...' In other words, like parents talking to their children, this levy -- don't call it a tax -- is for your own good. ... Mr. Obama complains that 'My critics say everything is a tax increase,' as if that is his political problem. His real problem is that the individual mandate really is a tax, but the President doesn't want voters to think of it that way, because taxes are unpopular." --The Wall Street Journal

INSIGHT

"Men use thought only to justify their wrongdoings, and speech only to conceal their thoughts." --French writer Voltaire (1694-1778 )

"Words, like eyeglasses, blur everything that they do not make more clear." --French writer Joseph Joubert (1754-1824)

"We resent all criticism which denies us anything that lies in our line of advance." --American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

"If you ever injected truth into politics, you would have no politics." --American humorist Will Rogers (1879-1935)

THE DEMO-GOGUES

You lie! "My critics say everything is a tax increase. My critics say that I'm taking over every sector of the economy. You know that. Look, we can have a legitimate debate about whether or not we're going to have an individual mandate or not, but ... I absolutely reject that notion [that it's a tax increase]." --Pinocchio Obama

Except what they're saying about you is mostly true: "Are there people out there who don't like me because of race? I'm sure there are. That's not the overriding issue here. I think there are people who are antigovernment. I think there's been a longstanding debate in this country -- that is usually that much more fierce during times of transition or when presidents are trying to bring about big changes. The things that were said about FDR were pretty similar to the things that were said about me. He was a communist. He was a socialist. Things that were said about Ronald Reagan when he was trying to reverse some New Deal programs were pretty vicious as well." --Barack Obama

Captain Obvious: "I think it's important to realize that I was actually black before the election." --Barack Obama to David Letterman (Actually, he is also half white -- before and after the election. It's not politically correct to mention that, though.)

Derision for votes: "I want those people talked to. I want them interviewed. I want journalists to be all over those rallies and those marches with the birthers and the teabaggers. Let's find out what they think." --Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), repeating the crass reference to Tea Party protesters

He'll allow profits -- for now: "Look, bringing about change in this town is always hard. When you've got special interests that are making billions of dollars, absolutely they're gonna want to keep as much of that, the profits that they're making, as possible. And by the way, those insurance companies even during these down years have been making terrific profits. We don't mind them making profits, we just want them to be accountable to their customers." --Chairman Barack Obama

Global warmism: "We understand the gravity of the climate threat. We are determined to act. And we will meet our responsibility to future generations." --Barack Obama to the UN (Ironic coming from the guy stealing from future generations to fund his big government dreams.)

UPRIGHT

"President Obama vows not to raise taxes on any American family earning less than $250,000 a year. Yet he backs legislation that would force every American to carry health insurance or pay a hefty penalty to the IRS. Such an 'individual mandate' is included in all the major health care bills making their way through Congress." --columnist Jeff Jacoby

"This isn't just about the partisan activists on the left or right. It's about an ever-growing sense on the part of regular Americans that their government isn't just clueless about their priorities and the realities of their lives; worse, they're beginning to believe that elected officials hold them and their views in outright contempt." --columnist Carol Platt Liebau

"In a sense, the health care debate and the foreign policy debacle are two sides of the same coin: For Britain and other great powers, the decision to build a hugely expensive welfare state at home entailed inevitably a long retreat from responsibilities abroad, with a thousand small betrayals of peripheral allies along the way. A few years ago, the great scholar Bernard Lewis warned, during the debate on withdrawal from Iraq, that America risked being seen as 'harmless as an enemy and treacherous as a friend.' In Moscow and Tehran, on the one hand, and Warsaw and Prague, on the other, they're drawing their own conclusions." --columnist Mark Steyn

"Iran's ruling mullahs will be delighted to learn that the West not only is unserious about preventing them from acquiring nuclear weapons and the missiles to deliver them, but prefers to remain defenseless as well. They will view this as weakness. And they will find such weakness provocative, as tyrants always do." --columnist Cliff May

"Are they agendas for the betterment of America? Or are they agendas for the betterment of the rest of the world? I'm referring to President Obama's policy agendas. Despite how much he reasserts that we 'must' embrace this or that policy simply because it is 'the right thing to do,' it's becoming increasingly difficult to claim that Obama's stated plans and intentions advance any sense of American wellbeing." --columnist Austin Hill

DEZINFORMATSIA

Slobbering sycophants: "[Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress] was, to say the least, a broad and forward-thinking speech. On the rhetoric and the phrasing and the pacing and the design of the speech itself, there seems to have been a touch of greatness." --MSNBC's Keith Olbermann

Playing the race card, ad nauseum: "In a season of angry protests, there are ugly signs that some of it is not rooted in bailout fatigue or suspicion of big government. Mixed in the anti-Obama crowds over recent weeks, racial slurs against the president of the United States." --NBC's Andrea Mitchell

About those right-wing extremists: "House Speaker Pelosi [is] worried about the opposition, the tone of it, perhaps leading to violence as it did in the '70s. There's more recent examples of anti-government violence -- occurring even in the mid-'90s. Do you worry about that?" --NBC's David Gregory to Barack Obama (Memo to Gregory: Pelosi herself is guilty of using inflammatory rhetoric -- "carrying swastikas," "Astroturf," etc.)

"Let me ask you a little bit about the tenor of this debate. It seems to me that there is a sort of meanness that's settled over our political dialogue. It started this summer at these town hall meetings. We saw this outbreak when you spoke to the joint session. Some people clearly just don't agree with your policy. But there seem to be others that are just, just mad and angry. President Carter is now saying that he thinks it's racial. Nancy Pelosi says it could be dangerous. What do you think it's all about?" --CBS's Bob Schieffer to -- guess who?

Sucker: "It's been not even a year since this country elected Barack Obama, a man who ran not to be the black president but the president. As he stood there that night in Chicago, and again a few months later in Washington on the steps of the Capitol, he pledged not to divide the country but to heal the divisions. What happened?" --columnist and cable pundit Susan Estrich (He lied and you fell for it.)

VILLAGE IDIOTS

Government as parent: "The American public ... just like your teenage kids, aren't acting in a way that they should act. The American public has to really understand in their core how important this issue [of climate change] is." --Secretary of Energy Steven Chu

Village victimitis: "We all know that women are more likely to work part-time or to work in small companies or businesses that don't provide any insurance at all. Women are affected because, as we heard, in many states, insurance companies can still discriminate because of gender. And this is still shocking to me. ... These are the kind of facts that still wake me up at night." --First Lady Michelle Obama pushing for a government takeover of health care

A nut talks about ACORN: "Everything, I mean, you know, there are boneheads in all organizations. We've worked for them. We know that they're there. But do you kill the whole thing? And I don't think so. A lot of people think that you should kill it. But you can't answer, you can't tell me where those people who become even more disenfranchised go. Because we know the Republicans aren't going to take care of them. ... So now where do they go?" --Whoopi Goldberg of ABC's "The View"

Shoot at our allies: "We are not exactly impotent little babies. [The Israelis] have to fly over our airspace in Iraq. Are we just going to sit there and watch? ... We have to be serious about denying them that right. That means a denial where you aren't just saying it. If they fly over, you go up and confront them. They have the choice of turning back or not. No one wishes for this but it could be a 'Liberty' in reverse." --Zbigniew Brzezinski, former Jimmy Carter national security adviser urging Obama to make it clear that if the IAF tries to launch an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities via Iraqi airspace, the U.S. Air Force will shoot down the Israeli jets ("This is insane on several levels. The USS Liberty was a U.S. ship that the Israelis accidentally attacked during the Six Day War in 1967 -- although conspiracy-minded anti-Semites suggest the attack was deliberate. Is Brzezinski a conspiracy minded anti-Semite, or is he suggesting that he would like to see the U.S. shoot down Israeli planes accidentally?" --Wall Street Journal columnist James Taranto)

Drool on the chin: "I can't tell you how satisfying it is to watch you work." --"Late Show" host David Letterman to Obama

SHORT CUTS

"Of all the poisonous, ugly and intellectually vapid controversies ginned up in my lifetime, the current breakout of St. Vitus' Dance over the 'racist' opposition to Barack Obama may be the most egregious. Al Sharpton tells CNN's Larry King that decent and racially sensitive Americans shouldn't let a small minority make health care into a 'racial issue.' Someone in the control room surely yelled, 'Cue the laugh track!'" --columnist Jonah Goldberg

"He's been on everything but the Food Channel." --Sen. Lindsey Graham on BO (Don't give him any ideas!)

"President Obama scrapped the missile defense system designed to protect Poland from Russian attack Thursday on the seventieth anniversary of Russia's invasion of Poland. This explains why Obama removed the bust of Winston Churchill from the Oval Office and sent it back to the British Embassy. He wanted one of Neville Chamberlain." --comedian Argus Hamilton

"The president thinks defense against long-range missiles is not so important any more ... Maybe an enemy will be considerate enough to dispatch short-range missiles. Maybe the Russians will help get a resolution through the United Nations condemning Iran's nuclear-weapons program. Maybe Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will repent and find a peaceful religion. We can hope for change." --Washington Times editor emeritus Wesley Pruden

"The fall season is a little different this year -- even squirrels are distancing themselves from ACORN. Because of all these scandals, the executive director of ACORN said she will fire any employee who's 'too stupid to understand they're not reaching professional standards.' Why can't we get this rule for Congress?" --Jay Leno
