Title: Parenting - being a father
Post by: Gaurav on August 14, 2009, 11:24:03 AM
I have recently become a father. I am enjoying this experience but I am also having some tough days. I'm find this area in my child's development (4 months) rather tough, particularly as he is unable to tell me what he wants. In all honesty I have always thought that this time would be hardest for me as a parent - I am looking forward to the time my son is able to speak. does anybody have any advice (preferably biblical) so that I no longer fret.

Thank you
Gaurav

CONGRATULATIONS!

There are many Biblical instructions for the raising of children, but your son is really too young for most of them. I think that the best you can give him right now is love, care, and attention. Some studies indicate that children of that tender age hear and start soaking things up quicker than we think. As a result, some Christian parents start singing Sunday School songs and reading Bible stories to them even earlier than 4 months old. It certainly couldn't hurt anything, and all children enjoy their parents reading and singing to them.

As Christians, we are to bring our children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. One of the biggest thing is obviously LOVE. Children are a gift from God, and God has placed them into our care. As you do unto the little ones, you do unto Jesus Christ. Jesus makes it clear that little ones have a special place in His Heart and the Heavenly Kingdom. They belong to Him.

Matthew 19:13-14 KJV  Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.  (14)  But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 18:1-6 KJV  At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?  (2)  And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,  (3)  And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.  (4)  Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  (5)  And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.  (6)  But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

I hope this helps some.

Love In Christ,
Tom

I would like to thank you for your speedy response. I understand that at this age I need to give a child love; I suppose it's difficult being out of my comfort zone. You see, I am a secondary school teacher - I find I can relate to older kids better - babies scare the life out of me! Nevertheless, fathering is a great honour and though I have found it tough, it really is far more a blessing than tough.

You're most welcome.

I didn't mention the most important thing - Christ is the head of the home, and frequent prayer by Christian parents brings wonderful results. God is with us, and He helps us - guides us - leads us - and directs us. Your care and concern is evidence in my opinion that you're going to be a good and Godly parent. So, the most important FIRST thing is for Christ to be the Head of the Home and the parents yielded to Christ.

One of my favorite Scriptures:

Romans 8:28 KJV  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

It's amazing how well things work in Christian homes where God is Loved and given His Rightful Leadership role in the home. Children with Godly parents yielded to the LORD is God's Plan.

Love In Christ,
Tom

My son is now 4 and a 1/2 and I am the opposite of most men that I know. I loved it when my son was an infant. Loved getting up and feeding him at night and just looking at his eyes. My buddies could not wait till their sons got much older. Don't get me wrong, I'm having the time of my life with my son now that he is able to do so many things, but in my opinion just try to remember what a great gift God has given you and that this gift that He gave you must be well taken care of, cherished and loved every single moment. You think this is hard, wait till the terrible twos and the teens. My son is just now getting out of the terrible twos (who knew it would last two years) and his transformation has been amazing. Keep the faith brother and just think about what real love is. Real love is taking great care of  your new child and loving him each and every minute.

Hello Keno90,

The time will come before you know it that your children are grown and gone - take my word for it - it seems like overnight. I enjoy reflecting back on times when my kids were little, but I also get to watch three grandsons right now (ages 9, 6, and 2). Time flies, so take plenty of pictures and try to enjoy every moment.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Hello Keno90,

Welcome to Christians Unite forums.

My wife had a hard time delivering our youngest son and then had to go through surgery shortly after. Fortunately I was able to take off work during that time. I became the primary caregiver for him for the first 3 mos of his life and took care of my wife at the same time. It hurt to see my wife go through what she did but I did thoroughly enjoy that time taking care of them both.

Brother Tom is right. It doesn't take any time at all for them to grow up. All of mine are grown and on their own. I do get to enjoy our grandchildren now though and even they are growing up so fast.

My oldest I remember he would get up in the middle of the night, I would get up and get his bottle.  Then I would sit in the recliner and feed him.  Then we would both lay down on the couch and he would fall asleep in my arms.  That is where mama would find us the next morning.

Ahhh...the good ole days...

They hit 2 and hate life.  They hit 12 and think they are 20.  Then they get that 'teen' word put after their age....and they think they know it all.  And wait until you get your $600 phone bill.  First car, first motorcycle, first girl friend, first dance...oh the stress...no wonder I followed Paul and shaved my head....it was all falling out anyways.

Would not trade it for the world...well maybe the phone bill I would. ;D

I think I will have to pay against a $600 phone bill (although)  ;D

I meant pray against, not 'pay against'.

Woops

I had to "pray" about how to "pay" for it, so I think that both of your posts are correct.
