Title: The truth about Valentine's Day
Post by: Whitehorse on January 23, 2004, 12:26:32 AM
Valentine was a Roman cleric who died for the sake of the gospel.

Any way to reclaim the ancient meaning?

Bonus prize for the one who can guess: What is Whitehorse's spouse going to give Whitehorse for Valentine's Day? It's always something good. I will say that. :)

Your guesses, reflections, and commentary here:

I didn't mean anything carnal by it. We don't give each other raunchy presents.

Oh, you are one of THOSE couples. Wearing wide brimmed hats and bonnets, farming for a living. Does you Community know you have a computer? ;D ;D ;D Hey, do they made you get a licence to drive the carts into town? ;D

I heard the story of St. Valentine. Legend says a newly-wed Christian couple was to be thrown to the wolves, but he went in their place. I was really young, so I remember the cool part, I forget he rest. Something about he would had out these letters that had messages or something. Again, I was young, and  was more fun then secret letters.

Then again, people getting torn apart by wolves are still more fun...

I'm going to make one heck of a Priest, eh? ;D ;D ;D ;D

Oklahoma Howdy to Whitehorse,

Could it be one of those huge, old-fashioned family Bibles bound in thick leather that may last 200-300 years? I recently had the pleasure of carefully looking at a massive family Bible given to my Great-Great-Grandfather on his wedding day. It was well used but still incredibly beautiful, especially the print, illustrations, and cover.

Did I guess right?  If not, please tell my wife of over 30 years that I want one.   :D

Love In Christ,
Tom

Mhm! Hazelnut Rochers, please!.

Or trail food, like dehydrated goodies. Beef stroganoff to go with my homemade stove. Mmm.  My spouse offered to give me a stove for my birthday, but I opted to make our stoves together instead. It was great fun!

What does everybody want for Valentine's Day?

How do you pronounce "rocher"?

Rocker?

Or rosher(to rhyme with kosher)?

Getting back to the original question, for Valentine's Day I'd like to serve the Risen Savior.   That's all that matters.   :)

In Jesus' Name...

Um, we're not thinking of doing anything rash here, are we, Whitehorse?

    ???

ABTW, what IS the story of St. Valentine, anyway?  (or, as tibby would say, "anyways" --  ::)).

Oklahoma Howdy to All,

Someone has already said it, LOVE! A couple of extra hugs and kisses from my Valentine for over 30 years will be just fine. UM??, Valentine and Fine rhymes, did you notice that?  :D

Love In Christ,
Tom

According to what legends I've read (its been awhile):
St. Valentine was a priest who cared for widows and children, and when the Government (king? Ceasar?) forbid soldiers from marrying, performed secret weddings for the young men and their sweethearts. He was thrown in jail for this. Some sources say that the orphans, whom he'd been kind to, threw "love notes" into his cell, supposedly where we get today's "Valentines". He was martyred by the government.
