Critics say they've never found a more systematic assault on liberty The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, which fights for the speech rights of students on America's college campuses, has released a video documenting a "thought control" policy at the University of Delaware. WND reported on the issue when the university's office of residential life was caught requiring students to participant in a program that taught "all whites are racist." School officials immediately defended the teaching, but in the face of a backlash from alumni and publicity about its work, the school decided to drop the curriculum, although some factions later suggested its revival. The documentary by FIRE, called "Think What We Think … Or Else: Thought Control on the American Campus," explains the "though-reform program." FIRE reports it was in the fall of 2007 when the "Orwellian program of ideological re-education aimed at coercing students to change their thoughts, habits, and values to conform to a highly specific ideological agenda" was established. More than 7,000 undergraduates in the Delaware dorms were required to attend training sessions, floor meetings and one-on-one sessions with resident assistants who followed the rules described in internal documents as a "treatment." "'Think What We Think... Or Else' serves as a reminder to college and university administrators that programs like that established at the University of Delaware are flagrant violations of students' right to freedom of conscience – and that colleges with programs that emulate UD's failed effort just might end up as the subject of FIRE's next documentary," the organization said. Foundation officials said they never had encountered a more systematic assault upon the individual liberty, dignity, privacy and autonomy of university students." Even Delaware professors Jan Blits and Linda Gottfredson described the program as a type of thuggery. "We read ResLife's online materials (most of which were later removed) and were appalled. ResLife was engaging students in mandatory activities designed to change students' thoughts, values, attitudes, beliefs, and habits to conform to a specific, highly politicized set of 'citizenship values' that had been pre-selected as the marks of responsible citizens. Anything deemed remotely 'oppressive' by anyone was to be stamped out, and resident assistants were being taught that '[a] racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality,'" they wrote, according to the FIRE report. The treatment of a female freshman class student was typical of the school's indoctrination, the program said. "A female freshman arrives for her mandatory one-on-one session in her male RA's dorm room. It is 8:00 p.m. Classes have been in session for about a week. The resident assistant hands her a questionnaire. He tells her it is 'a little questionnaire to help [you] and all the other residents relate to the curriculum.' He adds that they will 'go through every question together and discuss them,'" according to the report. When the student is asked, "When did you discover your sexual identity?" she responds, "That is none of your d*** business." Because she did not respond correctly, the residence assistant "becomes so appalled by her resistance that he writes up an incident report and reports her to his superiors," the report said. The mandatory "reprogramming sessions" even had the trappings of a cult, it said. Among the teachings from the Office of Residence Life Diversity Education Training documents was: "A RACIST: A racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. 'The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality. By this definition, people of color cannot be racists, because as peoples within the U.S. system, they do not have the power to back up their prejudices, hostilities, or acts of discrimination. ...'" The education program also asserted that "reverse racism" is "a term created and used by white people to deny their white privilege." And "a non-racist" is called "a non-term," because, the program explains, "The term was created by whites to deny responsibility for systemic racism, to maintain an aura of innocence in the face of racial oppression, and to shift the responsibility for that oppression from whites to people of color (called 'blaming the victim')." 'Professors are hired to teach all students, not just those who share their beliefs' Elected student leaders at American River College in Sacramento, Calif., have adopted a resolution that seeks to protect classmates from the "anti-religious and political indoctrination" of professors and others on campus. "I think we have accomplished a historic and very significant act today by passing this resolution to advocate for a Student Bill of Rights," said student Rep. George Popko, who authored the resolution. The measure was adopted by an 8-1 vote. "The purpose of the resolution is to go on record asking the administration to adopt the Student Bill of Rights as official campus policy," the 22-year-old councilman said. The resolution models activist David Horowitz's "Student Bill of Rights," a bill which was introduced to the California senate as SB 5 in 2005. Popko says he plans to present a Student Bill of Rights Resolution containing those provisions on May 3 before the General Assembly of the Student Senate of California Community Colleges, an organization representing 2.7 million college students. WND reported when the elected student leaders on the same campus endorsed Proposition 8, the ballot issue in California last through which voters embedded in their state constitution a definition of marriage limited to one man and one woman. The elected leaders since then have "been embattled with the leftist faculty, student organizations and administration on our campus," they have reported. When the conservative student leaders faced an unsuccessful recall because of their views, the Associated Press described them as "politicized Christian fundamentalists." But protections against anti-religious discrimination are needed, according to Victor Choban, president of ARC's Freedom of Speech club, because students "do not feel safe filing a complaint against a professor due to fear of their grade" "No student should be harassed or intimidated by their professor simply because they use their freedom of speech in a classroom discussion or essay," Choban said. The same student board in February approved a resolution to form a committee to investigate and respond to instances of anti-religious discrimination inside the school's classrooms, but the college president vetoed the plan. He cited the "potential" that such investigations and responses may violate his non-discrimination policies. The result was another plan that now authorizes the formation of a committee to address anti-religious discrimination. Resolution 09-03 calls for a "Committee on Anti-Religious Discrimination." It states: WHERE AS: There have been complaints and incidences regarding the presence of anti-religious discrimination and/or harassment on campus at American River College; and WHERE AS: The Student Council has the privilege and duty to take action to ensure students' First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and religious expression are protected; and WHERE AS: The Student Association Charter requires: "In accepting this charter, it shall be the duty of the student body to take upon itself the responsibility of self-government as set forth in the Declaration of Independence of the United States, and in so doing, to respect at all times the sovereign dignity and worth of the individual." And, WHERE AS: The Declaration of Independence states: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." BE IT HERE RESOLVED THAT: The Student Association of American River College establish a committee on Anti-Religious Discrimination, made up of at least three (3) students, selected by the Council. The committee shall seek ways to raise awareness to District anti-discrimination policies and procedures as well as evaluate the effectiveness of the current process. A monthly report of the committee's findings and/or recommendations shall be presented to the Student Council, or at the Council's request. No action taken by this committee shall interfere with established anti-discrimination policies of the District or of the college itself. The students cited the 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure, adopted by the American Association of University Professors, "Teachers are entitled to freedom in the classroom in discussing their subject, but they should be careful not to introduce into their teaching controversial matter which has no relation to their subject." They said in 1967, the AAUP's Joint Statement on Rights and Freedoms of Students affirmed the inseparability of "the freedom to teach and freedom to learn." In the words of the report, "Students should be free to take reasoned exception to the data or views offered in any course of study and to reserve judgment about matters of opinion." The students' bill of rights document also notes: "Professors are hired to teach all students, not just students who share their political, religious and philosophical beliefs." Popko told WND the attacks have been legion, from a Christian club unable to find a faculty adviser willing to work with students to obscene graffiti targeting student council members because of their religious beliefs. Prof alleges he was branded as bigot for defending Jews A judge dismissed a lawsuit against DePaul University brought by a professor who contends he was branded by school administrators as racist and bigoted for challenging a student's allegation that Israel treats Palestinians the way Hitler treated Jews. And while school administrators at the Chicago-area university allege that Professor Thomas E. Klocek behaved violently in the argument, the professor disputes the charges. His attorney, Andy Norman, told WND that he suspects Klocek was both suspended and publicly criticized by DePaul, not for any misbehavior in the context of the argument, but for the content of his views. "I think it's certainly a large element of it," Norman said. "Klocek was singled out because he took a pro-Israel stance and argued it vigorously with students who were very anti-Israel. The students' viewpoint moved to DePaul's administration as well. I think the content was a factor in what DePaul did." The defamation suit was launched in 2005 after DePaul suspended Klocek without a hearing for disagreeing with Muslim activist students over Arab-Israeli issues, Islamic terrorism and other issues in an out-of-classroom debate. Following the argument and a subsequent complaint filed by students, two university administrators wrote separate accounts of the incident – one printed in the school paper, the other published in Denver's Rocky Mountain News – contending that Klocek had "verbally attacked" the students over their religious beliefs and ethnicity. The university then suspended Klocek without pay and refused him further employment until he made apology. Klocek sued the school for maligning his "integrity and professional competence." Klocek's attorney at the time explained in a statement: "When [school administrators] characterized that professor Klocek attacked students' 'religious beliefs and ethnicity,' DePaul hung a Scarlet 'R' of racism on a loyal and much loved professor who has served DePaul University for 14 years without complaint. DePaul worked to ruin Klocek's reputation because of the content of his comments, not his conduct." Two judges independently ruled in the case that Klocek's complaints against DePaul University for defamation and invasion of privacy could proceed to trial. Judge Charles R. Winkler of Circuit Court of Cook County, however, reversed the decision and dismissed the case. As WND reported, Klocek's case began at a student activities fair, after he happened to visit the table of the Students for Justice in Palestine. When the professor took a handout that showed an Israeli bulldozer destroying a Palestinian house, he began discussing the Middle East with the students manning the table. Klocek says one of the students likened the Israeli treatment of the Palestinians to Hitler's treatment of the Jewish people – a statement to which he took offense. The professor challenged the students by quoting an Arab source concluding that although most Muslims are not terrorists, most of today's terrorists are Muslims. The student group subsequently filed a complaint against Klocek with Dr. Susanne Dumbleton, dean of the School for New Learning, resulting in his suspension. The dean took action without the normally required hearing. Writing about the incident in the school paper, Dumbleton stated: "No student anywhere should ever have to be concerned that they will be verbally attacked for their religious belief or ethnicity." DePaul President Rev. Dennis Holtschneider also wrote a letter slamming Klocek, which was published in April in Denver's Rocky Mountain News. Wrote Holtschneider: "Last September, Klocek acted in a belligerent and menacing manner toward students who were passing out literature at a table in the cafeteria. He raised his voice, threw pamphlets at students, pointed his finger near their faces and displayed a gesture interpreted as obscene. … DePaul offered to give Klocek a spring quarter class assignment if he met with the students to apologize for his behavior and if the program director could drop by his class to ensure that the health issues that affected his teaching were resolved. He refused." Norman told WND that Holtschneider's letter is an example of the libel alleged in the lawsuit, since the professor claims there was no shouting, throwing of paper, threats or obscene gestures exchanged during the argument. Following his suspension, Klocek further rejected DePaul's demand that he apologize for what he said. "My question: For what specifically?" Klocek asked. "An apology for the content of my speech? For what I said? It would be wrong indeed to censure the students for their ideas and beliefs. However, the university administration, realizing that apologizing for my opinions would amount to an unwarranted censorship of ideas, now asks me to apologize for conduct in which I have not engaged. "The draconian penalties to which I have been subjected are deeply distressing in light of the central issue here: free speech," Klocek said. A statement from Norman promises an appeal of Judge Winkler's dismissal of the case. "We believe that Winkler is in error and are confident we will have his decision reversed in the appellate court," states Norman. "We still look forward to a public trial where DePaul students and the public can judge for themselves whether certain administrators silenced Tom Klocek because a few Muslim activists wanted his opinions repressed." Students' lawsuit against California college moves forward Attorneys representing two students who have been threatened with expulsion by a California college because of a prayer for a sick professor say a federal judge has refused the school's efforts to have the case dismissed. "It's outrageous," said Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute, which is working on the case brought by students Kandy Kyriacou and Ojoma Omaga of the College of Alameda in Alameda, near Oakland. "Since when does praying for a sick teacher to get well – with her consent – earn a suspension? This is not just a constitutional violation; it is a complete lack of common sense. These students were not looking for a fight, but since the school to this day insists that it can expel them if they pray again, we will have to resolve it in federal court," he said. The public-interest legal group said the decision by a San Francisco federal judge means the lawsuit will move forward. The case was prompted by an incident just before Christmas in 2007 in which the students went to deliver a Christmas gift to a professor. "Kandy found the instructor alone in her shared office," according to Pacific Justice. "When the instructor indicated she was ill, Kandy offered to pray for her. The instructor bowed her head, and Kandy began to pray – until she was interrupted by another faculty member, Derek Piazza, who walked in and said, 'You can't be doing that in here!' Kandy quickly left and rejoined her friend and fellow student, Ojoma Omaga. Piazza followed Kandy outside and repeated his rebuke." While the students reported they were surprised by the teacher's aggressive behavior, they were stunned when, days later, they both got letters notifying them of the college's retroactive "intent to suspend" plan. The letters, however, provided no facts on which to make such a threat, listing only vague references to "disruptive or insulting behavior" and "willful disobedience." School officials informed them during administrative hearings that Kyriacou was being disciplined for praying for the sick teacher. Omaga was not part of the prayer, and her offense apparently was that she was with Kyriacou a short time later. The lawsuit was filed when the college refused to rescind the letters, leaving the students in peril of suspension or expulsion for any other offense, such as praying on campus. 'Actions of Day of Silence supporters are speaking louder than the silence' At least one pro-family organization that has opposed the pro-homosexual "Day of Silence" is being targeted with hate e-mails and telephone calls, including suggestions that officials go and kill themselves. "You may not be gay, but you may be next," said one e-mail, which included a photograph of a casket, according to Karen England, executive director of the Sacramento-based Capitol Resource Institute. England said the hate has flooded in since her organization joined the "Day of Silence Walkout." She also confirmed to WND that she has filed a police report on the threats. WND reported earlier this week on a multitude of organizations across the nation that oppose the DOS promotion in public schools sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network. Laurie Higgins of the Illinois Family Institute noted the goal cited by GLSEN is to reduce bullying on school campuses, especially bullying perceived as targeting homosexual students or those with other "alternative' sexual lifestyles. "No one supports bullying," she told WND. "Every school has more than ample anti-bullying policies in place. … For GLSEN, the means by which they want to end bullying is to normalize volitional homosexual conduct." England told WND that another message was, "I wish you would just go kill yourself." "If this is the kind of atmosphere we get just for asking kids to stay home, in an e-mail, can you imagine what is like for kids refusing to stay silent?" she said. She also said teachers should focus on academic subjects, not changing minds about sexual issues. "The actions of Day of Silence supporters are speaking louder than the silence," England said. She said she is urging the walkout "because students should be free to support traditional marriage and relationships, without their peers seeing them as bigots." The official day for the event is today, but opponents note some schools observe it on other days. England said the Day of Silence "falsely equates being anti-harassment with being in favor of social activism in the schools. CRI strongly opposes all harassment. Teachers and students, however, should always be able to speak at school. The classroom is not an appropriate setting for social activism and protest." "Many people who support traditional values are called right wing extremists, and Homeland Security says it is concerned about us. Maybe Homeland Security should be more concerned about assessing the threats we are receiving than about us as a threat to others," England said. GSLEN has sponsored the nationwide silent protest every April for the last 12 years. The event is said to be a showing of support for "gay," lesbian, bisexual and transgender victims of violence and bullying. According to GSLEN's 2005 National School Climate Survey, four out of five LGBT children experience harassment in school. The organization claims 64 percent of "gay" students feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation and 41 percent because of their "gender expression." GLSEN claims there are about 4,000 homosexual clubs now in American high schools and middle schools. A ninth grade history project at Pueblo County High School started out as a straight forward writing assignment, but it quickly outraged some parents. It was an assignment meant to teach kids about terrorism, and while some call it a misunderstanding others say it was just down right irresponsible. On Thursday, 110 freshmen at Pueblo County High School were given an assignment that many felt was questionable. At least one parent was shocked when her daughter explained the assignment to her. "She said you have two minutes to write down on a piece of paper what your act of terrorism would be if you were to come up with an act of terrorism," said parent Gini Fisher. The teacher claims the assignment was to illustrate an act of terrorism by a foreign government on American soil. Meanwhile, District 70 Superintendent Dr. Dan Lere says all of the assignments will be collected and destroyed immediately. Homosexual group founder handed federal Education Department post The founder of the homosexual activist group GLSEN, which promotes homosexual clubs in high schools, middle schools and grade schools and is the driving force behind the annual "Day of Silence" celebration of homosexuality in many districts, has been handed a federal appointment where he will be responsible for overseeing "safety" in the nation's public schools. Linda Harvey of Mission America, which educates people on anti-Christian trends in the nation, said it is nothing more than a "tragedy" for an open homosexual who has "had an enormously detrimental impact on the climate in our schools" to be in such a position. The appointment of Kevin Jennings was posted – with little fanfare – on a government list of federal jobs recently. He was named by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan to be the Assistant Deputy Secretary in the Office of Safe Schools. He previous worked to raise money for the presidential campaign for President Obama. In the new post, he'll be working on "safe schools" programs for educational institutions nationwide, said Harvey. "In his own writings and books listed on the GLSEN [Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network] Website, I've reported, Kevin Jennings has given tacit nods of approval to sex between young teens and adults," Harvey told WND. "In addition to that, the writings and books, many of which I've read and are incredibly graphic, seem to normalize early teen same-sex sexual behaviors." "It is unconscionable. This is educational malpractice and child corruption," she said. On Jennings' own website, a biographical sketch talks about how his work as an activist started when he used a school assembly in a district where he was a teacher to announce his homosexuality. He soon started the GLSEN activist group and, the report said, "has spent the last 12 years building GLSEN into a national organization at the forefront of a bold movement that now works with over 3,000 Gay-Straight Alliances." But a blogger who calls himself Beetle Blogger cited another statement from Jennings about his early promotion of homosexuality in schools. The blogger quoted Jennings saying, "We immediately seized upon the opponent's calling card – safety – and explained how homophobia represents a threats to students' safety by creating a climate where violence, name-calling, health problems, and suicide are common. Titling our report, 'Making Schools Safe for Gay and Lesbian Youth,' we automatically threw our opponents onto the defensive and stole their best line of attack. This … short-circuited their arguments and left them back-peddling from day one." Harvey said the appointment really is not surprising, given the pro-homosexual position adopted by Obama and Jennings' fund-raising for the Democrat. But she warned when "safe" is combined with "LGBT" as is happening at the federal agency, "What you have is the silencing of any conservative opinion. That's what they consider safety." "This is an outrageous 'in-your-face, take this, we don't care about your version of safety' for kids," she said. She also cited the introduction in Congress of H.R. 2262 by U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., which is "to amend the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act" to include pro-homosexual language that could use the issue of bullying to force indoctrination sessions for both students and teachers. The proposed training would relate to "real or perceived" sexual orientation and gender identity, she said. "How does this work? Well, let's look at an example from a state that already passed a similar law. In Iowa, teachers in some school districts endure the most outrageous in-service training imaginable. The Council Bluffs, Iowa, school district, Loess Hills Area Education Agency 13, gives a two-day teacher training course called 'How to Make My Classroom Safe for LGBT Students.' As part of the training, 'Videos will be used from Anderson Cooper 360, 'Will & Grace,' and several popular film segments like 'Brokeback Mountain' and 'Latter Days,''" Harvey said. "This man's work and his agenda are exactly why we've seen the radical pro-homosexuality curriculum pushed across California. He is now more strongly positioned to implement his agenda nationwide," said Karen England, executive director of Capitol Resource Institute. In Duncan's announcement appointing Jennings, he said GLSEN "works to make schools safe for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity."
