Quote Just as of a few minutes ago, my browser no longer opens. It crashes before it opens now. So I'm using my second favorite, but anyone know what this means? I'm not sure if it will help, but... Are you using Linux as an operating system on your home computer? If I remember correctly, Saved_4ever is a Linux Guru. Let me just give you one guess and see if it helps. You should have some sort of utility to clean and delete all your cookies, interest history, and temporary Internet files. Try that, turn your machine completely off, wait at least two minutes, and turn it back on. This is just a wild guess until someone who really knows about Linux can help you. In Christ, Tom Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: sincereheart on January 03, 2004, 05:30:38 AM And maybe someone knows how to reach 'linuxgeek'.... :-\
Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Symphony on January 03, 2004, 11:59:03 AM mmm, that's a good point, sincereheart. Last one I know of here to keep in regular touch with linuxgeek was Psalm119. He had a going website then. bep's recommendation sounds good to me. Maybe your browser is "overloaded", and clearing it like he suggests might help? Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Whitehorse on January 03, 2004, 07:39:46 PM I can't even get it to open anymore :'( And it's my favorite because it's faster than the others.
But I did get cookies cleared out, and I found the history now, so that's clean, but I still have to find the temp files. My home directory crashes, too. ??? Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Oklahoma Howdy to Whitehorse, If it crashes only while you are online the Internet, I would say it has something to do with an Internet temporary file somehow messing up the works. If it also crashes offline, there may be a virus or trojan loose on your system. If you don't have a good virus scanner, I'm almost certain that McAfee does a free online scan. If you try that, it might take longer than an hour, depending on how many files you have on your computer. McAffee also had a link for a pretty good freeware virus scanner you can download. If not, let me know and I'll try to find something for you. In Christ, Tom Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Whitehorse on January 04, 2004, 12:38:56 AM Tom,
Thank you so much. You are a true blessing. Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: nChrist on January 04, 2004, 03:39:34 AM Tom, Thank you so much. You are a true blessing. Oklahoma Howdy to Whitehorse, You are most welcome. By the way, I looked at my fire-wall records, and it does not appear that Christians Unite suffered a denial of service attack. DOS is where a group of folks get together and each program their machine to make multiple requests on a server, hoping they can keep it busy enough to deny service to regular users. Denial of service attacks take away the speed and sometimes some of the services of the server, but they do not infect users computers with anything. I'm still doing some checking to see what I can find out. I'll post it for everyone if I find anything at all. In Christ, Tom Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Symphony on January 06, 2004, 11:15:28 PM I'm still trying to see if I can figure out how to get in touch with Linuxgeek, a former regular here... Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: goinhome on January 06, 2004, 11:28:39 PM Hi Symphony my ole' friend ;)
I have sent Linuxgeek a message today about this-- haven't heard from him yet... but he would be the man to know exactly how to fix it, that is for sure!! Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Symphony on January 07, 2004, 12:01:08 AM Thank you, goinhome, my ole' friend! :) Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Whitehorse on January 08, 2004, 08:28:23 PM Wow! Thanks, guys! :D
Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Tabre on January 09, 2004, 01:58:57 AM I know what that means. It means format your hard drive and reinstall Linux. What distro are you usin' bro?
Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Whitehorse on January 09, 2004, 01:57:07 PM Hi, Tabre. Welcome to CU!
I'm using Mandrake 8.0 :-[ (Please nobody laugh...) Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Whitehorse on January 09, 2004, 02:01:36 PM Another wierd thing. I downloaded a cleaner, which I can see physically on the desktop. I can see the icon. But everytime I try to run the command to install it, whether from user or root, if that matters, I keep getting the message, "file not found." A tech guy from the company that makes the cleaner couldn't figure out how to open it, either... ???
Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Tabre on January 09, 2004, 03:42:39 PM You'll want to make sure that that file has proper priveliges set up on it. Even root can't run it if it's not set to execute.
You can change this with the chmod command. Use the command "man chmod" for more help using this command. And hey man nobody should laugh at you for using Mandrake. They should know that you're good because you're using Linux and not Windows! Someday you'll move on to the more challenging distros like Debian and you'll love it but everyone has to start somewhere. Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Whitehorse on January 09, 2004, 08:11:22 PM Thank you for your kind words and for your willingness to help-I really appreciate it.
Here's an interesting incident: after all that time on the phone with tech, trying to figure out why I couldn't find the path for the command to work, I recieved a message with this timely tip: Double click the icon. :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ Well, to at least partially justify myself, I didn't have the icon in the beginning. So we did make progress there, and I did manage to install it using this, er, "new technique." Then I went to the console as user, and ran the command to commence the scan. It's still running even as I type. When I run it under user it keeps saying access denied. Certain files it says it is unable to open, and some from the lib directory it says, "File read error during scan," and there's one in lib that says, "Illegal structures in scanned file. But this I did as user. So now I just started it under root, and it seems to be doing okay. :) So far. How do I do what you were saying before, to do the reinstall? My whole introduction to computers besides cut/paste is here, with Linux. But I want to get good at it so I can learn more about the program you were telling me about. This is getting fun! (Now that the program is running...:) ) Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Tabre on January 09, 2004, 09:11:40 PM Ya it feels good when you accomplish something on a linux box. Feels like you're learning. The chmod usage would go something like this... (this might work for being able to run as a normal user) as root....
% chmod (filename) u+x It's like saying to the computer (Change mode of (filename) for user(u) to executeable status (x). But if you type it like I put it above, it should work on that file. Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Whitehorse on January 09, 2004, 09:22:56 PM Oh, I get it! That's neat! I'll try it. :)
Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Whitehorse on January 09, 2004, 10:29:25 PM Well, I just finished the scan. It says no viruses were found, but it also couldn't open 20 files. *sigh*
I used the Norman, which is a command line scanner. I wonder if that is enough. Does that include trojan horses? Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Tabre on January 09, 2004, 10:32:34 PM No problem man. If you run into anything else, just let me know. I'll be glad to help out.
Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Whitehorse on January 09, 2004, 10:48:58 PM Thank you very muc for your help-I appreciate it.
Title: Re:Do we have any linux fans? Post by: Tabre on January 09, 2004, 10:52:12 PM There are very few viruses ever written for Linux but I would say it is probably enough to pick up a virus. You may want to check to see if there are updates for the antivirus software. Also, to answer the question about trojans....Most antivirus software detects viruses and worms and trojans but sometimes they can slip past.

Hm. I know for a fact there's spyware, but this scanner didn't catch it for some reason. An incorrect signature would indicate that? 20 files couldn't be opened. I'm going for doctor web next... |
