What are your thoughts on this?  Since the Super Bowl is always played on Sunday, do you have any feelings one way or the other on whether or not this is appropriate? 

I myself would rather watch corn grow, as it is a known fact I don't care for football.

There are several (about 1/2) in my Church what want to see the Superbowl. I'm bringing in a TV, we will have a Christian party before the Superbowl starts. In fact I've finished a sermon, dealing on "Winning for the Bride" I will be giving Superbowl Sunday.

I really don't see why not.  We have pot lucks don't we?  We have Halloween Parties for the kids.  Why not have a Super Bowl get together and let Christian brothers and sister enjoy some good, wholesome fun and fellowship?  I'm with DW though.  Football doesn't interest me.  BUT...if it was the last game of the World Series...count me in!

Especially if my team was playing!

I have to add that being a Christian dosn't mean that you can't have any fun.  We don't just sit around frowning ya know.  As a Christain I have had some of the most fun times in my life!  I love sports, bowling, going out, music, etc etc.  I love pot lucking with friends and watching movies.  I love a good (clean) joke.
Just because we are Christains doesn't mean that all we do is sit around and sing dusty old hymns. I actually like some hymns but I also like the newer stuff tool.
So I say, go to church, enjoy the praise and message and then.....

LETS PLAY BALL!

I'm not one to watch games. I always loved participating in them when I was able but there just doesn't seem to be the same fun in just watching unless it's my kids or grandkids playing.

I agree, nothing wrong with it at all. I don't like football but I do like hockey and baseball.

Funniest thing PR.....I love Perry Mason,  so for Christmas one of my daughters bought me the first season as it had finally come out on DVD.  And guess who one of the characters is in an early episode?  Aunt Bea!  But she wasn't Aunt Bea, but she did play an aunt from out of town!  Hahaha!  And no, she wasn't the killer either.  I mean Aunt Bea murder someone?  Really.  And neither was the niece she was in town to visit.  ;D

I am opposed to the Super Bowl being shown on a large screen in a church as in a sports bar, especially considering some of the half-time entertainment which we saw with Janet Jackson and Jason Timberlake a few years ago, for example. Furthermore, considering that the Super Bowl is a big moneymaker for advertisers, the players and the league, showing the Super Bowl at church seems to me to be too much like allowing the moneychangers into the Temple which Jesus angrily cast out ( Matthew 21:12; Mark 11:15 ).  Our attention at church should be focused on Jesus Christ and the things of God, not on sports.

The NFL could just as easily schedule their games on Fridays or on Saturday nights rather than on Sunday afternoons.  The same goes for Major League Baseball and the NBA.  Sunday is the Lord's Day in a nation that is overwhelmingly Christian.  I don't believe that the NFL respects that at all.  Churches that show the Super Bowl only encourages that attitude by the league.  I am sure that there are several Christian coaches and football players in the NFL, like the late all-time great Reggie White who was also an ordained minister, who would rather be in church on Sunday with their families than on the gridiron but that is their job and their employer requires them to be there.  I wouldn't have liked it one bit if my employer had made me work on Sunday. 

I once attended Chicago Bears games on Sunday for awhile when I was in a backslidden condition and did not attend church.  The Lord convicted me about that so I gave it up and made a vow to God not to attend any more professional sports events on Sunday which means that I can never attend another NFL game again unless it is on Monday night.  I love pro football but I love the Lord a lot more. 

No offense toward anyone is intended but these are my personal convictions.

Personally I had mixed feelings on the whole thing.  I'm OK with watching the super bowl but I wasn't real sure about making the party at the church.  We don't have Sunday evening services anyway so it provided another chance of fellowship with my Christian brothers and sisters.  It went very well and I'm OK with how it was presented and the turnout, I was just curious what other people thought about it.

As far as half time....turn the main TV off (leave one in the back so someone can indicate when the half time is about over), you have about 1.5 hrs of time in which you can preach and sing and give praise to God....or praying to God that your team will pull it off ;P

And you can get in a song or two at the commercials as well...or something...cause some of the commercials were not worth watching.
