Title: Grandmother Post by: Willowbirch on December 09, 2003, 07:05:16 PM My grandmother (in a nursing home) recently began having trouble standing, unable to put weight on one side; we found out this afternoon that she has up to three fractures in her leg/hip, one of which is a spiral fracture. We do not know what caused this, but suspect she fell while trying to stand up unassisted. She will undergo surgery tonight or tomorrow morning. My uncle's family and my mother will be with her. We aren't sure how she'll pull through this, she's had alzheimer's for many years and has gotten dramatically weaker in the past few months. Will you please keep her in your prayers?

I will pray for your grandmother and your family. The surgeons can do some amazing things these days. The 80 year old mother of one of my friends broke her hip about 2 years ago. The progress in the surgical techniques is amazing. She now has an artificial hip and walks better than ever. I'm sure the techniques have gotten better since then. Our prayers are with you. Please keep us posted about how she is doing. In Christ, Tom Title: Re:Grandmother Post by: Lite on December 11, 2003, 04:15:24 AM Hi Willowbirch .. We know a little more about the situation now; she has two fractures, both of them near her ankle. She was in a great deal of pain and fear, but was able to calm down when she was returned to her familier room. Surgery was postponed until Friday; she was given a temporary cast. The doctors will be checking her sometime today to see if her heart can handle an operation. If it can't, we aren't sure yet how they can help her. Seeing where the broken bones are, we now think she may have caught her leg in the guardrail of her bed, or even tangled it in the sheets. If she had fallen, there would have been injuries elsewhere. She went through surgery with flying colors; we were not expecting it to go so well. Up until they were ready to work on her, she was scared, wondering if she could "do it", but seemed suddenly at peace and confident when it was time for the surgery. If I heard correctly, she was not even put to sleep, just given a good dose of pain killer (or something) to help her through the operation. She is still at the hospital, but will go back to the nursing home soon, and is in a flexible cast. Thanks for your prayers, everyone! |
