I think they need to remake Bin-her (sp?), word for word. Great movie, with an underlaying Christian theme. And think of the Chariot racing with the effects like they are. It would be Gladiator (a Blockbuster) mixed with The Fast and the Furious (Another blockbuster). Of course, the one thing they will have to do is add a LOT more Racing in. That'd be cool. Some SWEET crashes, too.

It's Ben-Hur.

That must be the scene with the wagering Arab and his four white horses, and Charleton Heston sitting listening, in the tent.  The Arab actor's name is Hugh Griffeth.

The movie was first made in the 1920s--some disagreement over how many stuntmen actually died in that first chariot race.

The Heston one(1959) sure looks like it, but it's a well placed dummy.  very convincing.

It was the most read book in Reconstruction America--"Ben Hur", by __?_ Wallace.  There was a traveling stage play that travelled for many years, nationwide, including a mechanical stage prop, with moving scenery behind, and chariot, on stationary conveyor belt, with machinery underneath, to protray the race.  

The author, Wallace, was a fairly successful Civil War general--fought Robert E. Lee(?)  near Washington.  Also an envoy to the Middle East, (I think).  And territorial governor of New Mexico, around 1880.

The opening pages to the book, begin with the wise men in the desert Far East, seeing a star.  It's interesting stuff.

Punch in Wallace's name on your search engine.  Or maybe just "Ben Hur".    I forget Wallace's first name.

I've seen a clip or 2 of the races from the old, old one. It was cool. It would be great if they would make a new one. I've only see the 50's version, and that weas a while ago, but it was great. Good stuff, they need to make more of it! Not this trash they have out now.

The 1959 one is great--esp the ending, where Hur's mother and sister, are healed of their leprousy, just after the crucifixion.  Wonderful stuff.  Quite an epic film, with the gospel wonderfully woven in.  Hollywood did themselves proud on this one....  :)


I've never seen the 1920s one.  I think it of course was the reason they discontinued the travelling theatre play, which I think had played for some twenty years or longer.
