Title: Pastor is separated, Pastora is single
Post by: servant512 on October 24, 2007, 10:49:46 AM
Hello again brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus  :)

I hope you can share to me your opinions(biblically) regarding this matter, so that it will help me too in weighing my opinions and advices towards my friend Pastora.

We have a woman friend whom I will refer to as Pastora and his fiance a Pastor. Both of them work in different churches.

> Pastor is separated from his wife. His wife left him and their children for another man.
> Pastora has not been married or very much single but engaged to Pastor
> Pastora is very much accepted by the children of Pastor

Most Pastors and church members they both know disagree with their relationship.

Are they allowed to stand as church leaders?
Can they marry?

If their relationship is unacceptable, what  verse/s  in the bible will prove them wrong?
In case their relationship is acceptable, again what bible verse/s will prove them right?

Thank you.

God Bless!

I thought we went down a similar road before.

First Pastor...is he divorced or just separated?!  If not divorced then marrying another is not only a sin..but illegal :)

As for their relationship.  Again if it is legal then there is nothing to disagree with.  Even if you get legalistic on it then wife committed adultery which is the one specific that Jesus mentioned.

Matthew 5:32
But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

And if people of the church have a problem with that then in my opinion, tough.

Now onto the issue of leadership.
1 Timothy 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
Titus 1:6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

Clearly states husband of one wife.  Many will try and justify a divorced pastor by stating this means "at one time"  however in context the Jews of this time were not having issues with polygamy.  They were having problems with divorcing their wives for any reason at all.  See Matthew Chapter 5 as mentioned above.  And no where else in the NT is there discussion of polygamy.  So it does not make sense that we would start here.

With that in mind I believe that the Bible clearly indicates that a Pastor that divorces and remarries someone other than his original wife, will be led to step down from the pulpit.  God is not going to lead him to continue being a pastor against His own Word.  And the Pastor should recognize this and ask to be relieved of his duties.  This does not mean he cannot serve at the church or that God has abandoned him. There is plenty of other roles he can fill in the ministry, just not leading a church congregation.
