Title: How did you chose your "handle"?
Post by: HisDaughter on October 21, 2007, 07:36:02 PM
I thought we could share how we chose our handles; what they mean, etc. as a way to get to know one another better and have some fun!

I'll start:  I am known as "Grammyluv" all over the christiansunite web site.  Besides the obvious, that I'm a grandmother (of 4), it actually came to me because my 3 year old grandson was on the couch with me one day and when putting his arms around me said, "Come here, big love!" in his cute little voice.  It cracked me up and warmed my heart at the same time!  :D

Who's next?  :o

YES - I have heard grandmas called grammy, and I did suspect that connection.   ;)

Blackeyedpeas - You put some pork or bacon in it, a little bit of hot sauce, and make some cornbread for a meal fit for a king. YES - it is one of my favorites. In fact, it's a Southern favorite that everyone can afford. It's plain and simple, and that's the major reason why I chose it.

Some trivia:

These are also called cow-peas in the South because they grew wild and cows ate them. Folks from the North didn't think that people should be eating them. In fact, we tried to keep them a secret from Northerners for quite some time because they taste so good.   ;)  They are also easy to grow with little maintenance and in harsh conditions. Remember, they grow wild, so they are a very hardy crop. If someone can't grow them, they don't belong on a farm. They were most common on the sides of the road in the water drainage ditches. I assume this was natural because any rainfall would tend to soak into the ground in these areas.

Please note that I tried to use simple terms to describe this in an effort to prevent confusion for Northerners.   ;D  There are hundreds of recipes involving this Southern favorite.

Mine is fairly self explanatory also. I started out on the internet using a different screen name. Others still called me by my current screen name anyway so I just used it when I came to this forum. I am also known in my neighborhood as either Pastor or Grandpa (some of my neighbors knew me when I was a pastor).

I've heard them called cow-peas before but thought it was for a different reason.  ;) :D

I have spent considerable time in the south and enjoyed much of the cuisine but blackeyedpeas was one I could never get the knack of enjoying. They have always tasted a bit earthy to me, kind of like plowing the fields on a dry, windy day. Being an old northern farm boy I enjoy many kinds of beans, pinto beans, navy beans, red kidney beans ...  they all taste good to me except the blackeyedpeas.

Now a batch of grits, rice and gravy or poke salad and I'm ready.

Well you tried, but you didn't get me on that one!  My dad is from Georgia!  And now resides in Mobile, AL.  I also grew up on grits, biscuts and gravey and country music! hahahaha!

Pastor Roger...I thought your name was Wes?  I figured you were a pastor though just from all the good info you post!
And I lived in Beaumont, MS (backwoods) for a bit so I've even eaten some racoon!  Aughhhh.

The name is pretty much self explanatory.

And I came from Michigan and have been in Alabama since 1981.  And grits and the b.e.p's just do not do it for me.  I enjoy the catfish (although not a favored fish of mine), and many of the other delicacies of the South.  I just wish that when I say I would like to get a coke, someone would ask me what kind I want and not just get me a Coke :D

My handle comes from my initials.  I too live in the South and enjoy Southern food. I only partake of it occasionally though as I am getting older and it's harder to keep the weight down eating all that fried, rich food.  You all sure make me hungry just talking about it!!!

Congrats to all you grand parents out there! I am not a grandma yet, and hope it will be a long time coming as my daughter is only 8.

Thanks and God Bless, Eva

Wes?   ;D ;D  Were'd that come from? Good one though.  ;)

Catfish, Raccoon, squirrel, rabbit are not just a southern dish. They are prized by all of us northern farm boys, too right along with Catfish and walleye, the only fish that I will eat.

Haven't had squirrle but yes, even us Northerners eat some rabbit once in a blue moon.

As to the "Wes", I thought I'd seen you sign that way once.  Maybe I ought to wash me specks!

Speaking of 'Southern" foods ... while we were stationed in Norfolk, Va for a few years, I grew to LOVE a lot of those foods/dishes. Collard Greens, Turnip Greens ( ALL those leafy things) blackeyedpeas, grits .. it was truly a 'tasty' experience!

Hate greens, but you reminded me of living in VA-I grew up in the same area.  Where do you live now?

My son was stationed in Norfolf.  Twice!  He is in San Diego now.  In the Navy.

I agree about the "greens".  Love em'!  Mustard greens are my favorite because they've got just a bit of tang to em'!  But I love it all.

I was in the Army back in the 60s, but my son served 6 years in the Navy and got out about 2 years ago. I'm pretty proud of my son, so I'll sing a Navy song. However, I would repeat what Pastor Roger said. I give thanks for all of our Armed Forces and pray for them every day.

By the way, I live at Lawton Fort Sill, Oklahoma and it's a huge Army Base. We are extremely proud of them, so I'll have to sing that Navy song quietly with a bucket over my head.   ;D   My wife doesn't allow me to sing anyway unless she's gone and all the doors and windows are shut. If you heard me sing, you'd understand why. My little dog doesn't like it either.   ;D

I know what you mean there my friend!  One morning my 3 year old grandson was eating breakfast and I was singing.  He says, "Grammy, don't sing!"  "Why?", says I.  "Because, I'm eating!", he said.

I chose mine after reading "The confessions of Augustine" in which he credits the voices of children outside his window as they were chanting "Toll-ege" which is Latin for pick it up and read it! Upon hearing that; Augustine picks up the Scriptures and trusted Christ.

Mine's very simple. It's the first 3 letters of my first name combined with my middle name. I use it in all forums, and I'm in a lot of them. Being retired I have nothing else to do and spend much of my time in Christian forums. It takes money to do anything else, and my medical bills eat up my retirement.

Hello Tollege,

I hope that you're not talking about Christians Unite. There are many so-called Christian forums these days that are little more than rows of pulpits for devils of this world to spout garbage. Christians Unite is not one like that. You will find tons of good and GODLY material here fit for an entire Christian family - including children.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Romans 8:37-39 NASB
But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.  For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Hello Jon-Marc,

Brother, you sound a lot like me. I spend nearly all of my time with Bible Study and Christians Unite. I was very fortunate to have good medical insurance when illness forced me to retire, so the insurance pays about 80 percent of my medical costs. Let's put it this way, we can still put real hamburger in the "Hamburger Helper".

Brother, I think that participating in a Christian forum is a good way to serve the LORD. Christians Unite has over 12,000 readers a day, and GOD has promised that HIS WORD will not return void. I feel like I'm doing what GOD wants me to do.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Romans 4:22-25 NASB
Therefore IT WAS ALSO CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification. "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED.  "BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT."

No Bro. Tom, I was referring to people I am in contact with everyday. I read allot of books and have discovered a vast difference between authors of a couple centuries ago and many of today. However I have found that many people are not concerned that there is such a gap. I am simply referring to the insight and seriousness of mind about the Scriptures as opposed to this day.

Hello Tollege,

Thanks for clarifying that. I understand exactly what you mean now and feel the same way. It's almost impossible to keep up with all of the new doctrines, false prophets, and false teachings springing up everywhere. Many twist the Gospel of the Grace of GOD beyond recognition and basically start their own religion - another false one.

I don't think that you'll find any of that stuff here. We try very hard to preserve Christians Unite as a place for the full-strength GOSPEL OF THE GRACE OF GOD that was applicable and TRUE 2,000 years ago AND is just as true today. I hope and pray that you find only the TRUTH here and that GOD gets all of the Glory.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable GIFT, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour Forever!

Hello PK,

Here's BIG OKLAHOMA HUGS back at you. You are in my thoughts and prayers often. Sister, we live in fascinating times and are probably nearing the end days of this Age of Grace. Regardless, we will all be going to our real HOME soon, and we will spend Eternity together with JESUS CHRIST.

RAPTURE

KEEP LOOKING UP!

THE RAPTURE WILL BE A REALITY!

1 Thessalonians 4:13 NASB  But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope.

1 Thessalonians 4:14 NASB  For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 4:15 NASB  For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 NASB  For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

1 Thessalonians 4:17 NASB  Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 4:18 NASB  Therefore comfort one another with these words.

____________________________

1 Corinthians 15:50 NASB  Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

1 Corinthians 15:51 NASB  Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,

1 Corinthians 15:52 NASB  in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

1 Corinthians 15:53 NASB  For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality.

1 Corinthians 15:54 NASB  But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory.

1 Corinthians 15:55 NASB  "O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O  DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?"

1 Corinthians 15:56 NASB  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law;

1 Corinthians 15:57 NASB  but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:58 NASB  Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.

I get back to the topic heading. My handle came from a large great horned owl that lives on a island near my home. I frequently see him and his mate flying through the trees or sitting on a limb observing nature. I named him " Islandboy", as he often visits me when I am out in my yard and garden. If you read my posts you will discover that I was mistaken for a boy in my posts because I forgot to choose gender when filling in profile information.
I live in SW Florida, came here from Pennsylvania, over twenty years ago. But I still long for the mountains and rivers, and all my good friends. I enjoy this forum because there is a little bit of everything in the posts, and a whole lot of the writings and quotes of our Lord, in among all the topics of this forum.

Welcome MikeO and Tollege.   :) :) :) :) :)

My daughter's nick name is Twitterbug... and when she was really little and all her baby toys were all over the place and I would pick them up at the end of the day I would say I had to go around and pick up all the twitterbug dust... so ... I use that as a handle on alot of sights
