City bans smoking in some homes
Landmark ordinance includes multi-unit, multi-story residences

The Belmont City Council on Tuesday night adopted a landmark ordinance regulating secondhand smoke in the city.

The ordinance passed on a 3-2 vote and will go into effect in 30 days, according to City Manager Jack Crist.

The ordinance was introduced by the City Council on Sept. 11, and then approved with a few wording changes at its Sept. 25 meeting.

Thought to be the first of its kind in California, the ordinance declares secondhand smoke a public nuisance and extends the city's current smoking ban to include multi-unit, multi-story residences.

Though Belmont and some other California cities already restrict smoking in multi-unit common areas, Belmont is the first city to extend secondhand smoke regulation to the inside of individual apartment units.

While I am against smoking period anywhere my question is what is going to be regulated inside peoples private residencies next. It is a sign of over regulation and excessively big government to come.

I am like you Pastor I am against smoking as well, but how do we tell someone what to or not to do in their homes. When do we draw the line between freedom and health. I for one would give up that freedom is we have a healthier society in return.

I disagree brother. What if the smoker has young relatives? The smoke doesn't always go away

Disagree? I think that you misunderstood. I didn't say that I was against this at all. My question was what is going to be regulated in a persons private residence next?

Not a problem. We can all misunderstand things once in awhile.
