Two dioceses take steps toward leaving Episocopal Church

Two Episcopal dioceses -- Pittsburgh and Quincy, Illinois -- have taken steps toward leaving the American church and aligning with a conservative Anglican province overseas.

Their decision will hinge on whether the Episcopal House of Bishops -- which meets in New Orleans starting Thursday -- accedes to demands from Anglican leaders that the U.S. church pledge not to consecrate another openly homosexual bishop or authorize official prayers
for same-sex couples.

If Episcopal leaders fail to agree by September 30th, they risk losing their full membership in the global Anglican Communion. But no one expects them to completely agree to those terms.

Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh spokesman Peter Frank says the denomination has been departing from traditional Christian doctrines in ways that conservatives can neither follow nor accept.
