Pentagon advisor: U.S. should be worried by Chinese computer hackers

A Pentagon advisor and national defense analyst says Americans should definitely be concerned over the recent report that the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has hacked into defense systems at the Pentagon.



The report, published in the Financial Times on Labor Day, quoted unnamed sources that said the PLA hacking took place in June and forced officials to take down the network for more than a week. The Chinese denied the report, calling the allegations "groundless." But Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis (U.S. Army-Ret.) says this was not the only report to emerge recently about Chinese hacking.

"There was one in Germany last month," claims Maginnis. "Der Spiegel, the magazine, reported on it. And they pointed their fingers clearly at the People's Liberation Army. They penetrated the chancery of Angela Merkel and three of the German ministries."

Maginnis argues that there is a sinister motivation for the Chinese to conduct hacking operations. "What they really want to do is practice in peacetime, like now, so that when they're on the battlefield they can deny us ... access to our satellites as well as to our communication systems and computer systems that give us a real edge on the battlefield."

The retired Army officer contends the Chinese are also working on the development of computer viruses that can be used to attack U.S. computer systems and networks.

I have noticed that not only has there been not much publicity on this but practically a total lack of concern by those in the public that have heard about it.

China is still one of the greatest threats to the safety of the U.S. yet there is almost no concern about them anywhere.
