Hi, I'm working on a project, but I don't want to use the NIV translation in my references anymore. The KJV is too hard for some people and may effect the usability of the project, so I'm looking for the most reliable thing I can find that is still user-freindly. Is the NKJV good? What is the extent of the changes, and is it reliable? It doesn't seem like many people use it, but I'm finding too many renderings int the NIV that don't seem like the best renderings. If anyone can shed some light, I'd be grateful. Thanks!

While visiting my Bible Book Store, and speaking with the manager, who I've known for years, I remembered his recommendation a couple of years ago of the recently copytighted version of "The English Standard Version"  2001, by Crossway Bibles, a division of Good News Publishers, Wheaton, Ill 60187, USA

I didn't purchase one, at that time, since I already have upwards of thrity versions, as it is.

But about 6 months ago I purchased a copy, and it came with a Bible on CD + concordance, and words searches, not to mention greek interlinear, so the CD alone was worth the cost.

I understood when I purchased it, that it was as close an interpretation to the Greek-English Interlinear, so far it looks good to me.

I don't think there is one version out there that can be billed as the version of versions, but the CD included into the price and its apparent diligence in translation effort, sure does help in study  and comparing to other translations..

So a few months ago

I'm not at all up on the new different translations.

The rabbi who taught my class in Hebrew Literature, seemed to dislike most all of these, mentioning three in the class that he recommended;  the first i"ve forgotten, but I think it was in Hebrew, the second I believe was The Jerusalem Bible, and the third, which I had interestingly been given by a friend, was the RSV--which I"ve used to this day.

But for some purposes, depending on the passage, I find the KJ very beautiful.  The passage in Matthew, so poignant, so rich with pathos,

  "Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, 'In Ramah was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning.  Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not."  (2:17-18)   :'(

as opposed to the RSV:

  "Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:  'A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more.'"  

...which somehow just doesn't ring with that same beautiful poetry of the KJ.   :-\

Nevertheless, for most purposes, I use the RSV.  But I've been unable to find a Net edition of it.  So I'd probably then use the  ASV.
