Kentucky universities accused of defying marriage amendment

A Kentucky-based pro-family activist is calling on the state legislature and the governor to take action against two universities that are openly defying an amendment to the state's constitution protecting traditional marriage.



In 2004, Kentucky voters passed a marriage protection amendment to the state constitution that defines marriage as only the union of one man and one woman. But Kent Ostrander with The Family Foundation says two flagship universities in the state are developing so-called a "partners benefits plan," which would reward anyone in their employ who is having sex outside of marriage.

Ostrander says the universities are granting medical insurance coverage to an individual's sexual partner.

"This means heterosexual, it means gays, lesbians and what-have-you," the family advocate explains. "And it's in direct violation of our state constitution, which we passed -- the marriage protection amendment in 2004, saying that only marriage would be one man and one woman, and that nothing identical or substantially similar would be validated or recognized," he says.

He contends that by granting such benefits, the schools are "recognizing these partner relationships and then validating them."

Ostrander says attorney general Greg Stumbo supports same-sex "marriage" and is not willing to press the universities. In response, Ostrander is encouraging attendance at a pro-marriage rally at the Kentucky State Capitol on August 13.
