Court rules against prayer opposers

The Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has vacated a lower court ruling against Louisiana's Tangipahoa Parish School Board over prayers at board meetings. The court said the plaintiffs didn't show they had standing to file a lawsuit.

Writing for the majority, Chief Judge Edith Jones found that the court record didn't show that the plaintiffs actually were exposed to the invocations. The appeals court also ordered the lower court to dismiss the case brought by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of two public school students and their father.

Another lawsuit over prayer at a Tangipahoa Parish high school graduation ceremony is pending at the district level.
