Family groups find ruling on controversial Maryland sex-ed curriculum unsatisfactory

Pro-family groups in Maryland are considering whether to head to court in the wake of a ruling from the Maryland State Board of Education which has approved a controversial pro-homosexual sex education program for middle and high schools in Montgomery County. The Washington Post quotes the Board’s 17-page decision as saying that although a parent does have a right to control the upbringing of a child, "that right is not absolute. It must bend to the state’s duty to educate its citizens."

According to the report, the Board made the decision in a closed session, preventing groups like Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum from addressing board members. A spokeswoman for that group claims that many parents in Montgomery County oppose the curriculum, which opponents say presents a favorable viewpoint on homosexuality and restricts religious expression by suppressing the view that homosexuality is a sin.
