Mainstream media columnist says surge is working

A columnist for two mainstream media newspapers says the media is virtually ignoring a major U.S. military push in Iraq that has put al-Qaeda terrorists there on their heels.

It is called "Operation Arrowhead Ripper," and it is taking place in the Diyala province northeast of Baghdad. The operation involves some 8,000 American and 2,000 Iraqi troops. Jack Kelly is a former Marine, who writes a column for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Toledo Blade. He says the ongoing operation in Iraq is the biggest battle since the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein -- and its outcome, he believes, could determine ultimately whether the war is won or lost.

"It's taken the offensive to the terrorists, and could well have a decisive impact over the next few weeks," says Kelly. "I think if we do not lose this war at home -- and there's a very high likelihood that we shall -- in the next six months, it will be won on the battlefield within about that period of time. If we lose in Iraq, it will have terrible consequences for us in other parts of the world, including our part of the world. our own country."

He says unfortunately the politicians may prevent the troops from achieving victory. "That may be something Americans won't find out until after they have gratuitously lost the war by political actions at home," he shares. And he contends those actions are unwarranted by what is occurring on the battlefield.

"We are finally winning on the battlefield," says the former Marine. "And we're finally winning because for the first time since [Hussein was ousted], we're doing what's smart, [we're doing] what it takes to win."

Kelly says it is unfortunate that the mainstream media has paid less attention to this story than it has to the legal troubles of a hotel heiress.
