Germany hails Wolfowitz resignation as right decision Berlin, May 18, IRNA

German Finance Minister Perr Steinbrueck welcomed the decision by World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz to step down from his post in the wake of a scandal over a hefty pay increase for his live-in companion, news reports said Friday.

Speaking with the German Deutschlandfunk radio station, Steinbrueck said Wolfowitz' decision would enable the World Bank to function again.

He added that Wolfowitz' resignation process had taken too long and had damaged the reputation of the World Bank.

Wolfowitz has been declared persona non grata in Berlin where he was scheduled to attend the World Bank Africa Forum on Monday.

German Development Aid Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul said she would not welcome Wolfowitz in Berlin on Monday for the World Bank conference which is to focus on the economic development in Africa.

Asked whether Wolfowitz should attend the World Bank meeting, Wieczorek-Zeul replied, "I would not advise him (to come), if he is still in office."
Berlin has been among some of Wolfowitz' strongest critics in recent days.

According to a World Bank press release, Wolfowitz announced his resignation on Thursday, effective on June 30.

In a separate statement, Wolfowitz said it was "necessary to find a way to move forward" and that it was in the World Bank's best interest "for that mission to be carried forward under new leadership".

Wolfowitz became World Bank President in June 2005.
