TEHRAN -- European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana has new ideas on the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program which have support, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani said here on Wednesday. Iran does not seek adventurism and is “prepared to reach an understanding with the other side in appropriate negotiations, not talks that are used as a tool,” Larijani told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Rangin Dadar Spanta. “In the current situation, the ground is better prepared for reaching an understanding,” he added. Iran officially announced on Monday that it has reached the stage of producing nuclear fuel on an industrial scale, which is necessary for operating nuclear plants. The new round of negotiations should not be based on previous principles; rather, in light of the new situation, there should be a new plan, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator stated. Setting preconditions for the talks is a sign that the other side has already decided what the result of the negotiations will be before they even begin, he added. On the doubts certain Western states expressed about Iran’s nuclear announcement, Larijani said, “We don’t want to ruin the joy of others. If they are happy, let them be so. If the doubts are true, then why are they concerned?” According to Reuters, Russia said on Tuesday it was “not aware of any technological breakthroughs.” Diplomats who follow Iran’s file have also expressed doubts and a senior German official echoed this uncertainty on Wednesday. “There is a good deal of doubt whether there are really 3,000 centrifuges. We will probably get more information in the next few days as IAEA inspectors should be going to Natanz,” German Deputy Foreign Minister Gernot Erler told German radio. Larijani also said that Iran does not want to withdraw from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and believes it is a good treaty.
