Title: Solana Against setting any outer borders for the EU Post by: Shammu on April 13, 2007, 11:54:21 PM Solana against setting outer border for EU
Apr 11, 2007, 15:51 GMT Berlin - European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana spoke out Wednesday against formally determining the outer borders of the European Union. 'The borders cannot be set in stone. We should not finalize them,' he said in an interview with the German magazine Die Zeit. Solana said the EU could, however, decide 'not to expand much further than the circle of countries with whom we have already started negotiations or have pledged a European perspective to, such as the Balkan states.' How far the EU should expand is an issue which has led to divisions within the 27-member bloc over how to proceed with the EU constitution, which has been on ice since its rejection by Dutch and French voters in 2005. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is hoping to present a road map on how to proceed with a streamlined version of the document to the next EU summit at the end of June. Merkel, whose country holds the EU presidency, is due to discuss the issue with Czech President Vaclav Klaus, a strong opponent of the constitution, at talks near Berlin on April 17. We should not finalize them," Solana told German magazine Die Zeit. But the EU, he said, could decide "not to expand much further than the circle of countries with whom we have already started negotiations or have pledged a European perspective to, such as the Balkan states." EU member states are divided over how far the bloc should expand and how to proceed with the stalled constitution. Germany hopes to set up a road map to go ahead with a revised version of the treaty before its presidency expire in June, but Czech President Vaclav Klaus opposes the plan. German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet him on April 17 near Berlin to discuss the issue. Brother, it's almost amazing to watch the developments around the world every day. The study of Bible Prophecy now is beyond just fascinating, as it appears to be unfolding before our very eyes. I've thought over and over again, if only the lost knew more - they would be paying closer attention to the ultimate message of JESUS CHRIST and the CROSS. Love In Christ, Tom |
