Title: Two Options of the Gospel.
Post by: ollie on October 15, 2003, 08:51:43 PM
God Through the Gospel of His son Jesus Christ offers two options:

1. to obey, eternal salvation

Hebrews 5:9.  And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

2. not to obey, everlasting destruction from the Lord's presence

 2 Thessalonians 1:8.  In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
 9.  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord,
and from the glory of his power;

Ephesians 2:8-10. 'For by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works least anyone should boast'.

Romans.5:8. 'God demonstrated His own love to us in this way, while we were still sinners Christ died for us.

Romans.10:9. That if you will confess with your mouth Jesus Christ as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead you will be saved.

Romans 8:31&32. 'If God be for us who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him freely give us all things.'

Philippians.2:13. 'For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for his good pleasure.

I Corinthians 15:14 says "Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures:"

In I Corinthians 3:12, 13 we are told that our works will be made manifest. Good works and bad works will be rewarded accordingly. Verse 14 says "If any mans" work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward." 15 "If any mans work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss." Notice now what Paul says "but he himself shall be saved". The fact is that as believers our works will be rewarded accordingly. However, we will be saved. Other scriptures to support this point are Romans 14:10 and II Corinthians 5:10.

God has promised us eternal life in His Word, and He has provided this wonderful life through His Son.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (John 3:36)

The promise is that whoever believes in the Son "has everlasting life." Notice that it doesn't say that the person who belives may one day obtain everlasting life, but that the person "has" everlasting life, the very moment they believe in Him. The gospel of John repeats this wonderful promise many times. In fact, one of the key reasons the book of John was written was that, "... you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name" (John 20:31).

God Through the Gospel of His son Jesus Christ offers two options:

1. to obey, eternal salvation

Hebrews 5:9.  And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

ollie,

Good verse, the HIM in verse 9, refers to God the Father, it isn't evident in verse 9, when taken by it self, but notice the context of verse 9, in the passage;

Heb 5
5:1  For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
2  Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.
3  And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
4  And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
5  So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
6  As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
7  Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
8  Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
9  And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
10  Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

Note the preceding verse 8, Jesus as the Son of God learned
obedience, and by it became perfect and the author of eternal life.

Jesus, alwasy taught that His words were not his own, but His fathers, who commanded Him what to speak (see Deut 18:15-19), and so he nsays at:

Jhn 12
44  ........  He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
45  And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
46  I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48  He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
49  For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
50  And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

Note verse 50; his (Gods) commandment is life everlasting.

Obedience has to do with believing faith to the saving of the Soul.  It is God who commandeth all men everywhere to repent. (Rom 17:30)

And if anyone obeys the word spoken by Jesus, believes Him who sent Him, if not, then they reject Him who sent Him.

But as it has been said many times before, man is incapable of obeying, because he cannot believe, unless it is given by God to believe Jesus.

The rest of what you have posted  in the context of obedience to Gods Word defines the second option, which is not good....for the disobedient.

Quote
2. not to obey, everlasting destruction from the Lord's presence

 2 Thessalonians 1:8.  In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
 9.  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord,
and from the glory of his power;

And I am in full agreement with this..

Blessings,

Petro

Excellent.

Actually Rom 5

19  For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Says it all............

His obedience is imputed unto us for righteousnes.

So believeing the words Jesus spoke on behalf of the Father, is actually believing the Father's Word.

Man can trust and obey the truth, but he does not produce faith to believe of himself.

It is the Word of God, which is;

powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Heb 4:12

This precept is built upon this other precept;

Isa 55
11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

The Word of God will produce results, when heard by them whom God gives hearing, Jesus said;

Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.   (Mk 4:11-12)

Romans 6:1.  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
 2.  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
 3.  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
 4.  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
 5.  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
 6.  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
 7.  For he that is dead is freed from sin.
 8.  Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
 9.  Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
 10.  For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
 11.  Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
 12.  Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
 13.  Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
 14.  For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
 15.  What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
 16.  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
 17.  But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
 18.  Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
 19.  I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
 20.  For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
 21.  What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
 22.  But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

 23.  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 7

1   Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
2   For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
3   So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
4   Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5   For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6   But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
7   What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8   But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9   For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
10   And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
11   For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
12   Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
13   Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
14   For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15   For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16   If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
17   Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18   For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19   For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20   Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21   I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22   For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23   But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24   O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25   I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

 Romans10:13. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
 14.  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
 15.  And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
 16.  But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
 17.  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Faith is obedience to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. One must hear it and believe it. This is obedience.

 7.  Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

To emphasize the point that Paul BELIEVED his righteousness was imputed to him, this is what he wrote concerning it;

Phil 3
9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

Acts 5:17.  Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,
 18.  And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.
 19.  But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,
 20.  Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
 21.  And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
 22.  But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned, and told,
 23.  Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.
 24.  Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.
 25.  Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people.
 26.  Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned.
 27.  And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,
 28.  Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.
 29.  Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

 30.  The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
 31.  Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
 32.  And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

Faith is obedience:

 Hebrews 11:8.  By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

2 Corinthians  10:4.  (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
 5.  Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Matthew 7::13.  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
 14.  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
 15.  Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
 16.  Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
 17.  Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
 18.  A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

 23.  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
