Post by: selah7777 on September 30, 2003, 04:29:20 PM
This is exciting to meet you all. My name is Monique. I am 49 years old. I live in the Lake Tahoe foothills. I am wanting to start a Website to show The Holy Bible as a history book.
Does anyone know where I can get info about this?

I like your website idea. As far as information: I can't give you any sources right now, but Ray Vanderlan (sp?) does some excellent videos etc. on the historic side of the Bible. He explains what was going on in the background of the Old Testament, and often does his videos on site, such as: he did a series on Psalms, and took the cameras to several places in the hills where David wrote some of his poetry. He often does his films on excavation sites as well. He also did a devotional on sheep and shepherds, by explaining the Jewish ways of guarding flocks etc. Did you know...

When Jesus says, "I am the door," and "A thief enters not by the door" - an interesting history lesson behind this describes a shepherd taking care of his flock by lying in the doorway of the sheepfold at night, so that he, literally, is the door. Nothing can get in or out without waking the shepherd.

The walls in much of the Jewish region were made to keep earth in for gardens, since they were on hilly country. They were little more than piles of stone, and were always in need of repair. They could last generations if well-tended; but if a gardener was not caring for his wall, by keeping the stone chinked in etc, it might crumble, thus allowing the rich earth in his gardens to wash away and leave poor soil or bare rock. "A little sleep, a little slumber, and...poverty comes"

When a man "sat in the gates", as in the case of Lot, or the "Proverbial woman's" husband, it meant that he was of high social status; he judged people's arguments and welcomed visitors to the city. (He wasn't just sittin' chatting, like I always thought, lol)

I highly recommend Ray Vanderlaan's devotional tapes; he has an immense wealth of history and information, which help describe what was going on in our scriptures.
