Title: The Deacon and the Boy Post by: sincereheart on September 26, 2003, 06:56:56 PM I didn't want to sidetrack any threads, but I was reminded of this and wanted to share:
His name is Scott. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans, and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant. Kind of esoteric and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college. Across the street from the campus is a well dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students, but are not sure how to go about it. One day Scott decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started and so Scott starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can't find a seat. By now, people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. Scott gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit, and when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick. About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Scott. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, and very courtly. He walks with a cane and, as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves that you can't blame him for what he's going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor? It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy. The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man's cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can't even hear anyone breathing. The minister can't even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do. And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty, he lowers himself and sits down next to Scott and worships with him so he won't be alone. Everyone chokes up with emotion. When the minister gains control, he says, "What I'm about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget." Shouldn't it be more like this? :-\ Title: Re:The Deacon and the Boy Post by: Symphony on September 26, 2003, 10:31:48 PM That pretty much says it, sincereheart. I've done my share of the aristocratic snubbing. The story of the rich man and Lazarus at his feet... Title: Re:The Deacon and the Boy Post by: Tibby on September 27, 2003, 03:26:23 AM Good story. Reminds me of a Joke a litte:
There was this Prostitute that was recently saved, so she gave up her lifestyle, and started going to this church. But this was a very conservative church. The first Sunday, she came with a mini-skirt and halter top. Afterward, the pastor kindly suggested she ask God what she should wear next Sunday. Next Sunday, she comes in with this same stuff on. The Pastor call her aside after church again. “I guess you didn’t talk to God about what to wear, then?” The Pastor said. The Women replied “Oh, I did. I asked him. He said he didn’t know the dress code because he had never been to that church.” ;D Title: Re:The Deacon and the Boy Post by: Symphony on September 27, 2003, 09:14:11 AM How do we know when to snub and when not to snub?? If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist. If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist. But since our greatest need was forgiveness, God sent us a Savior.

Man does too often judge by outward appearances, but God judges the heart. I loved that story. It reminded me of my grandfather. He was a pastor in and around the Ft. Worth, Texas area for many years. His home was also a popular stop on the hobo circuit for most of his life. Night or day, he would feed those who were hungry with food and THE WORD. In Christ, Tom Title: Re:The Deacon and the Boy Post by: Tamara on September 30, 2003, 01:46:57 AM I loved that story too. Reminds me of a slightly retarded lady here who wanted to go to church.
Along she went, a bit rough looking but eager to hear what she could. She came home thrilled to bits. Then, she kept going to church. Later, I met one of the ladies of the church who was well to do. I asked her how my friend was going. She replied. "It is beyond me! Of all the churches to go to here, WHY did she have to pick ours!" hmmnnnnnnnn Love..Tamara. Along she went, a bit rough looking but eager to hear what she could. Sounds like she had the right heart, which is what the Lord looks at! ;) Matthew 23 25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. "It is beyond me! Of all the churches to go to here, WHY did she have to pick ours!" Reminds me of the line: "God, save us from Your children...." :-X So sad! And happening so often in so many places! :-\ *sigh* Title: Re:The Deacon and the Boy Post by: Tamara on October 01, 2003, 09:45:52 PM Ahhh, but humans don't look on the heart Sincere, what a pity. But, she has never stopped going to that church. Why? Because she is so sincere and honest I could liken her to Forrest Gump. Sadly, she moved away from the township, but moved right into the church she had attended here in the next town! I can't say what the reaction was there, for whatever it was, she would never have noticed. She was there to learn about God! And, her little boy goes with her everytime...
We have a Mighty God! Love Tamara. Title: Re:The Deacon and the Boy Post by: sincereheart on October 02, 2003, 08:59:59 AM Well said, Tamara! Amen! 8)
