Title: For anyone insterested in moving away from Micro$oft
Post by: Saved_4ever on September 20, 2003, 06:59:00 PM
Please click the Lycoris link at the bottom.  I feel this is a good alternative to Micro$oft.  It's not as good for people who want to play a lot of the modern games (yet) but for everyone else it works very well and is cheap.

Just thought I'd put that out there.  Take a lookie.

I haven't tried Lycoris. Is it better then Red Hat?

It's easier that's for sure.  Better is somewhat a matter of opinion though.

They have a great user community that's willing to help any noob.  They also package up RPM's so that it installs and leaves it in your program menu or "flower menu".  It's meant to be an "ease of use" distro.  I can see them quickly becoming their own OS and not strictly linux within a few years.

Is it compatable with windows programs, or do I have to get a WINE?

You always have to have a WINE or CROSSOVER OFFICE for that.  I'm not sure but I think wine is already on it though.  You'll have to look around.  Is there something in particular that you need to work?

Games ;D Some of those games are picky. But then again, so is Windows  ;D

I don't know, I just got a Laptop as a Grad present, it has XP Pro, that OS works pretty good! I put Blinds on it, and they thing still runs like a charm! This is the first Windows System that can run Window Blinds without reducing the speed to turtle! After battling with ever version sinse 95, XP Pro has almost (almost) recovered my faith in Mircosoft. Note, this is XP PRO, I'm sad to say, XP Home is Wondows at its worst! Well, not as bad as Me, but close!

Either way, this OS looks pretty good. I'll check into it more. Thanks for the tip.

W2K is actually a little better than XP because it doesn't have that stupid activation crap.  I guess you haven't had to deal with it yet.

I have no idea what window blinds is but I think you are confusing OS with hardware.  The OS doesn't cause the progrmas to run slow the hardware does.  Seeing as you have a new laptop I'm guessing you have new hardware that's better than anything you've used before.

The ONLY difference between Pro and Home is the added network abilities which the average person needs not.  So I really don't know where you're coming from with the XP Home comment.

No, windows blinds is Software:

You know the skins all the media programs are comming out with now? This allows you to have a skin for all of windows.

Well, we all do a lot of networking. LAN PARTIES! Pro just seems to have a better prformance. That could be it, with the hardware, but my other computers arn't that old, in human years, that is.

Yes I know it's software that's my point.  A computer is pretty old at age 3.  So just tell me what the specs of your PC(s) are and I can tell you quickly what the problem is.  If you are trying to use something to reskin windows, both your video card and RAM need to be up to spec almost more than the processor.

That still doesn't answer my question.  Give me your specs and I will tell you why it's running slow.  I am a hardware freak so to speak.  I have my xp2100+(1.73 Ghz @ 133 FSB) running at 2.32 Ghz @ FSB 185.  That makes it faster than any Athlon XP chip you can buy, Ghz wise that is.  I also have a Gig of RAM in my system.

The E-machine has an XP 2000+ AMD Athlon, 512 MB Ram, Prosavage 8 Graphic card, a CD-RW Drive x38, and a x16 DVD/CD drive, that also isn't working properly. The modem is a 56k, we don't get cable out where I live >:(

Upgrade that video card and watch how much better your system works.  You should have 32 megs to run XP and it's eye candy well, 16 to get by.  8 has to be the absolute bare mininum.  I can show you some cards with 64 megs for around $30.  If you want one for gaming it'll cost more.  Seriously though if you ugrade your video your windows blinds will run better.  I take it you have XP on there.  Please don't tell me it's Win ME.

Yes, all my computer have only the best, XP, and/or Red hat. My Pastor had Me for a time at the Church. Which is rather old, sence his is a Techie to the end. ;D Don't worry, we "Penguinated" him.

I wish the Voodoo was still here. Can you imagen who much more powerful they would be today if they were still producing and growing! I got the Voodoo 3 when it first came out... O dear lord, what a dream, for the games cakc then, at least! Anyways, I'll look into getting a new card.

I don't agree about RH but regardless, we have seen what 3DFX would have produced if they were around.  It's called the Gforce 5x00 series of cards and they suck.  There was some good reason 3DFX went under.  Most of it was management, but seeing what a horrible card the 5x00 series is speaks for itself.

I can tell you don't know much about hardware.  Especially current hardware.

www.techreport.com is a good start for keeping on top of things.

But Come on, for there time, the Voodoo where great! They ran Unreal Tournament pretty good. I wanted kept up with much. We all graduated, most of the time, college takes up gaming time.  >:( Do you know how long it has been sence i played a good LAN of Quake 2: Chaos? AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Killing is no fun without your friends around. :-(
