More Accusations Of Racism Thrown At Senator Allen, Allen Campaign Responds

Update: It was all huge smear job. Captain Ed scolds and spanks Salon like they need.

Quite terrible accusations are being made against Senator Allen. He is going to have an uncomfortable job defending himself against these claims. I passed it on to Allah Pundit who has responded with a wow! I’ll just have to wait to hear him defend himself on this one. Salon claims to have three sources that used to play college football with him stating he was very racist towards blacks in those times.

Here is some of the worst:

Shelton said he also remembers a disturbing deer hunting trip with Allen on land that was owned by the family of Billy Lanahan, a wide receiver on the team. After they had killed a deer, Shelton said he remembers Allen asking Lanahan where the local black residents lived. Shelton said Allen then drove the three of them to that neighborhood with the severed head of the deer. “He proceeded to take the doe’s head and stuff it into a mailbox,” Shelton said.

That is quite a damning accusation.

I’m told by an inside source that these are all unfounded smears and that there will be a solid response very soon. I hope it is a good one because accusations like these, regardless of whether they are true or not, are quite damaging especially in conjunction with some of the earlier race related controversies we have seen. As MKH points out…Even if you’re innocent of it, it’s hard to get the stink of the accusation off you..

On the other hand, with the majority of the players saying they saw no signs of racism, what gives these three sources, two of which are anonymous, more credence over the others? Also, Dan Riehl has found other possible motives for the only guy willing to go on record as to why he might put forth such allegations.

Dan also notes:

With nothing other than anonymous sources to support Shelton’s claim and the vast majority of relevant individuals contradicting the story, it might better serve Scherer if he could produce a witness without a possible political motivation. Even sources that acknowledged Allen’s fondness for a Confederate Flag in his college days stated they saw no signs of racism from Allen.

I’m not writing this off for the guy in any way. If it is true I can’t defend it. However, I do hope people will hold off on their judgements until we hear the other side of the story from the Allen campaign.

SeeDub also makes a good point:

Note that even though Allen is already a Senator, his accuser Robert Shelton didn’t come forward with this story until this year, the year that Billy Lanahan, the third witness to “the deer head incident” died. Now it’s just Shelton’s word versus Allen’s.

Update: The Allen Campaign responds:

Joe Gieck, 35-year UVA trainer: “I seem to recall that Ken Shelton got the ‘Wizard’ nickname for his pass catching ability and before George Allen came to the University of Virginia.”

George Korte, UVA linebacker ‘70-’73: “Ken Shelton received his nickname because of his ability as a tight end to magically get open and catch the football not because he shared someone’s last name.”

Charlie Hale, UVA center ‘70-’73: I have always known him by the nickname, ‘Wizard’. I have always thought the name came from his ability to catch passes … or his ability to somehow get open in the field. Personally I believe that he was a true ‘Wizard’ because he always had the ability to sneak out after curfew and never get caught.”

So, like I said before, why was this one anti-tobacco and environmental activist’s word given more credence than 16 of the 19 other teamates who said they had seen no evidence to suggest he was racist? The seven who personally knew him well all said they had never seen anything that would suggest such claims. Read the entire thing at Allen HQ.
