Title: Marketing Genius of the 00's Post by: Whitehorse on September 05, 2003, 07:27:20 PM 1970s: The Marketing Marvel Award goes to The Pet Rock. How anyone can pick a bunch of unattractive rocks off the ground and make an insane wad of cash by putting them into crate-shaped boxes is beyond me. Hats off to whomever.
1980s: A blunder that became a hit: Coke changes its formula, which raises incredible ire for the loss of tradition, but then when they change back to Classic, people have a much greater appreciation of what they almost lost and profits soar. Unwitting Marketing Marvel. Hats off again. 2000s, and you will never believe it: Outhouse Springs Water, for winning America's heart with such slogans as, "America's first recycled water," and, "We're number one, not number two." A marketing firm wanted to prove the power of outdoor advertising and made a media rumble by advertising a nonexisting product. So big was the rumble, that they actually decided they would make it into a product! Now how you can actually convince America to buy bottled water advertised as recycled outhouse water is nothing short of...Never mind-there is no word for it. The story: http://www.outhousesprings.com/story2.html Other beloved slogans: http://www.outhousesprings.com/campaign2.html Perfectly amazing. |
