I'm looking for ideas and input.

Even though I live alone, my life is chaotic and busy, my schedule unpredictable.  I'm often up at 5:00 a.m., sometimes working until midnight.  It is hard to get my devotional life on a regular schedule.

I've read in several books lately about the need for a "prayer closet" or a special room or just a space set apart.  Have some of you done this?  Where is it?  How do you use it?  I'm full of ideas, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.  I'd like to hear about what works for you.

Andrew in my bedroom, and living room, I keep an empty chair. No one is allowed to sit in that chair.  I imagine the Lord is sitting in that chair, when I pray.

I have a small space set up in my bedroom kind of like an office/computer area. I shut and lock the door, turn off the phone, TV and any other distracting things. It is my time alone with Jesus. It is not always easy as I have family and neighbors coming over all the time but I make that time anyway.

Thats sounds like a great idea.  I don't have a "space" but I do enjoy the evenings (my wife works different schedules so I am alone often after work until late in the evening) sitting on my deck spending quiet time with the Lord.  Yesterday I was praying and saw an egret and thought, "Lord, that is the strangest looking bird.  What were you thinking when you created it?"  I find myself lost in fascination with my Savior.  Or if it has been a troubling day, it gives me time away from things to sit with the Lord, although I try not to complain too much  ;D ;D ;D
Let us know what you decide to do and how it is working for you.  I will be looking for ideas when it comes winter....brrrrrrr.  Too cold to sit outside!

Amorus, like DW, I too have an empty chair in my bedroom, no one is allowd to sit in it either. It is reserved for my Lord when I am alone with Him. Sometimes I kneel at that chair and pray, I imagine myself leaning on my Savior's bosom. I am alone most of the time as I am disabled, so I have all day to spend my time with Him. I also live about 30 yards from a park and less than a quarter of a mile from a nature trail, sometimes I go to these places just to enjoy the wonder of God's creation, and to talk to Him. I have a small garden too, where I like to spend time working on, when health and weather permits, and that too is a good place for me.

The important thing isn't where your prayer closet is, the important thing is how often do you go there? God is not in just one place alone He is everywhere, and any place I happen to be at when I need to talk to Him, I know He will meet me there too.  ;)

Amen sister He is indeed everywhere. Prayer and time with the Lord should not be restricted to just a prayer closet. Anytime any place is His time and the place to be with Him.

Yes Sister, I too enjoy my garden and nature in general.  Very good insight in your post, may the Lord be praised.  Lately I have not been able to sleep very well.  I was up very early in the late watches of the night, my head buried in my bible when I felt the Lord sitting in the easy chair in the corner of my living room.  (I was glad He picked the most comfortable chair in the house.)  I know closely how you feel when you say you lean on your Savior.  Our God is very much alive and with us always.  This post has brought great joy to me today.  Amen and Praise the Lord!  :D

In my bedroom, there is a little corner walled in partially by my desk and bed. I have a high-up bed (with space underneath for bookshelves and a small dresser), and when I am in this corner at the end of the bed, nobody can see me from the doorway. Its nice, having a "sneaky" place; very useful for kids playing hide-and-seek, and also for adults hiding in the Lord. I have a Kleenex box here (or leftover napkins), and sometimes I keep a Bible or a helpful book here. God isn't restricted to my little corner, of course, but this is where I come when I want to hide while I pray.

Isn't it wonderful how God will meet us anywhere we are, all we have to do is call on Him.
