Title: Whither Frodo . . . and Jesus? Post by: StillSmallVoice on June 26, 2006, 11:29:10 AM A few days ago, "Christianity Today" online had an article questioning the American Film Institute's choices of the 100 Most Inspiring Films (of all time). C.T. was troubled that "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy wasn't included on that list, considering the many inspiring themes that inhabit the movie:
1) Friendship 2) Loyalty 3) Love 4) Courage 5) Battling evil 6) Holding to good 7) Sacrifice and a host of others. (It's easy to find the C.T. article, which is still up as of this morning 6/26). I'd say the magazine has a point about LOTR. Even more troubling to "Christianity Today" is the fact that not one of the 100 movies is about Jesus. But that begs the question: Are "The Robe", "The Greatest Story Ever Told", etc., inspiring enough AS MOVIES to be included? "Ben Hur" should certainly be on the list, although not specifically ABOUT Jesus (although the argument could be made that it's ALL about Jesus). I like the older movies about Jesus, but they are a little hokey in their production values compared to "To Kill a Mockingbird", etc. I'd be interested in others' thoughts. I have movies that I like and thats what I stick with, despite what the general population thinks. I took a look at that list and can't really agree with some of the movies that are on there, but thats me I guess. However, I'm not sure how the LOTR didn't make it, especially based on the criteria. I was glad to see the Ten Commandments on the list. Thats an Easter standard for me ;D
