Title: Land of the Free Post by: Soldier4Christ on June 12, 2006, 01:52:15 PM "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
- Benjamin Franklin Emma Lazarus’ famous poem that is on the base of the Statue of Liberty. The New Colossus Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" A problem that faces the United States today. How do we maintain our liberties, our freedoms, that we so thoroughly enjoy. To keep our status as a free country that is willing to help and take in the tired, the poor and those yearning to breathe free and still maintain our nations safety from those that want us all dead. There are those that want to build walls around our nation. Somehow that reminds me of the Berlin Wall that we all cheered and praised God when it was torn down. Many of these people that are now considered illegal aliens came here on legal visas that are now expired. Officially this group is called "overstays" but they are still illegal. They have not officially been similated into the American way of life. What should be done about this problem. It has the nation split into many different ways. Those that want to remain in their birth nations language and their way of life with no regard to the way this nation is and has been operated and they want us to change to accomodate them. There are those that are willing to break this nations laws, not just to get into the country but to make a way of living here. Then there are those that actually are trying to make a better way of life for themselves and their families, trying to stay within the laws of this land to do so. There are those that want completely open borders, others that want more laws, others that want to close the borders completely and yet others that want something in the middle. Do we give up what our nation has always stood for or do we continue accepting all? It is a tough time for our President and our Congress. I for one am glad that I am not in their shoes. It is time that we all go back to what our Fore Fathers did. Turn to God in prayer. Pray for the right answer, pray that our nations leaders will make the right decisions, pray for our safety from those that want us destroyed, pray that this nation will return to God, pray, pray and pray some more. |
