Title: Bronzesnake Builds Cabinet With His Son
Post by: Bronzesnake on April 20, 2006, 12:08:45 AM
Hey Tom.
Here's that cabinet I told you about.
My son, Michael and I put it together.

This shot was hurridly taken by my second eldest son, Jason in our basement. I'm going to put a drop ceiling in this summer.
Please excuse the funky pajamas!

Maybe I should post some of the things, I've made out of wood. Looks nice brother, an entertainment center?

On another note, cute PJ's. ;) ;D

I've done some woodworking myself in the past. Really nice job, brother.

(The PJ's are becoming of you.   ;)   )

Bronzesnake,

Brother John, that's a nice looking cabinet. I tried several times many years ago to build a few things, but I always hurt myself in some way every time I picked up a tool.  ;D

I did manage to do a few things right, but they all involved injury. If the tool was sharp, I got cut. If the tool was blunt like a hammer, I got blunt trauma. I eventually started picking tools that would cause the least injury.  ;D

Brother, you and your son did a good job.

Love In Christ,
Tom

Romans 8:26-27 NASB  In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Yes, it's an entertainment center Bob. It's designed to hold a cable box on the top shelf, obviously the TV in the center. The bottom right top shelf holds the DVD - the lower shelf holds the antiquated VCR. The little lady wanted the large opening on the lower left for a basket which will hold Play Station games/DVD's etc.

I used to build cabinets, and furniture out of pine, oak and maple for a well known furniture shop up here called "Old Ontario House" This piece was actually origionally built by my son Mike, at high school about four or so years ago. It began life as an armour. It was huge, so we cut it down t make it narrower, and we reduced the depth also. Then we removed some shelves, and cut them into smaller shelves which are at the bottom of the piece. We also cut down the top plate, and routered it.

There were doors at the bottom, but being produced at a high school meant fighting for use of essential equipment such as planers, stroke sanders etc, so the doors were severely warped and very rough. We couldn't save them here at home because I only have a variety of hand tools here. We managed to get the piece looking decent with a lot of palm sander action, and old fashioned elbow grease with hand sanding! Mike loved that part! :D

I had to purchase some of the fascia you see on the edge of the 3/4 shelves, because the stuff Mike had was very poor quality, and ver rough without having been planed, or run through a jointer.

All-in-all, it was just a great experience teaching my son how to build, and use some of the tools we have here at home. The piece came out very nice, we were both really happy at the end, and we will be staining it this weekend.

Tommy, thank you my friend for the compliment. One of the tools you used in your career was far more dangerous than any hand tools you might have cut yourself with my brother, and you did a fantastic job with that tool Tom! ;) ;D

Thanks for the pj compliments everyone...I think! :D

I don't have any pictures left of what I did. The last woodworking I did was before my house fire. The furniture and the pictures were completely destoryed. Now I don't have the space to set up the tools. I wish I did because my son wants to get into it too.

I am really sorry to hear tha Pastor Roger.
You're in an apartment now are you not?
That pretty much makes it impossible to do any largescale woodworking, but you could do some smallscale stuff my brother.

Hopefully, you still have enough tools to get into something smaller, because tolls are quite expensive aren't they? I have a pretty extensive tool collection. I'm always looking at yardsales for tools, that's a great way to pick up some really good stuf cheap.

In a few years, I'll take out a small 2nd mortgage and build a garage/workshop in the backyard. We do have a good sized back yard. Right now, I have a small shop in the basement that I'm useing for my oil painting and other hobbies. I have hundreads of my die cast toy cars down here...my wife doesn't really appreciate them like I do! :D

I live in government housing right now, a duplex. Their rules are pretty strict so I can't do anything with the tools because of the noise restrictions. I am hoping to get my VA claim increased soon. If that happens I am hoping to be able to move into a place where I can set my tools out and get some use out of them. Yes tools are expensive and it is a shame for them to be sitting in a small shed not getting used. I have almost everything a wood shop needs except the woodshop.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

The wood is cedar, cut at different angles and fitted together. Where you see the grain, is where I used oil, to bring out the depth of the grain. Heavier the oil, the darker the grain. You can see where I messed up on the one edge.  I didn't varnish the wood, just lacquer the whole table. The lacquer finish is wearing off, *whine* so I do have to buy more. Yes I have a workshop, out in the stables. Stables for 6 horses, but I only had 4 at anyone time. So the other two, I joined together, and made a workshop.

Hmmmm...... I'd never thought to photograph my birdhouses.  I built one one time that was a pedestal-style 'triple decker'!  It's in my mother's garden.  Most of them are small, decrative pieces that I've given away as gifts.  I guess I better get out the old Polaroid and snap that puppy while it's still standing ~ I made it years ago, before I got sick.

Blessings ~

Hello Sister Terri,

I have a friend who builds birdhouses all the time and makes really good money doing it. One of the local garden centers will buy every one he can get made. They sell almost immediately, and his cost for making them is pretty minimal. He gets scraps from lumber yards at pennies on the dollar, and most of his expense is simply time. He did do some research about what various native birds in the area like, and he made the birdhouses specifically for birds already in the area.

Believe it or not, they easily sell for $40 to $80 each, and they sell faster than he can make them. If I remember correctly, the garden center gets 30 to 40% clear profit, and he gets the rest. He also enjoys doing them, so it's a win-win situation for everyone. I might add that many people buy them for decorative pieces inside the house, but they can just as easily be used outside for birds. He uses a lot of cedar and very little paint unless someone wants something colorful for inside.

Love In Christ,
Tom

John 1:10-13 NASB  He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

After seeing how good you guys stuff is, there is no way I am showing anything of mine.  I too tend to get hurt when I make things.  I end up with more wood left over then what I put together. ;D

Hey Sweetpeas!

I'm just sneaking in for a bit and saw your reply . . . . I'm kind of afraid to sell my birdhouses ~ I'm on Disability and don't want to give them a reason to cut my "reward" (can you believe they call it that?  Some reward!  I barely make ends meet, if it weren't for my Lord God providing I would be homeless!).

Anyway, thanks for the idea!   :D  It seems you're always looking out for me.  Gotta love ya, Brother!!

Blessings ~

Why not take "donations"?  ;)

Some of our friends are deer hunters, and they aren't allowed to sell the venison; but its perfectly legal for them to *give* us some meat, in exchange for a *donation*.

But donations might look too much like a "reward".  :-\

But I can see enough in the other two pictures to see some really great handiwork. I love that interior.

Hello Sister Terri,

I think you can make a certain amount of money without worrying about it and supplement your income with no problems at all as long as you stay away from that limit.

OR, you could go into business with Willowbirch, both of you become millionaires, and just forget about the SSI.   ;D   ;D

Love In Christ,
Tom

Ephesians 3:11-13 NASB  This was in accordance with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and confident access through faith in Him. Therefore I ask you not to lose heart at my tribulations on your behalf, for they are your glory.

Each state is different on the amount but there is the ability to make a certain amount before they start taking your SSI away from you. I'm not on SSI but rather regular SS Disability. My daughter is on SSI and here she can make up to 850 a month before they start taking hers away.

Like PR, I'm on SS Disability.  SSI is totally different in that it's based upon NEED, (sort of like welfare).  SSD is based upon the type of disability and work history ~ I paid into the system from 1978 to 2002 so basically I'm just getting my own money back.... so I don't know if they CAN cut it back, now that I think of it.  Good idea Sweetpeas!  Maybe I can earn a little money on the side..... typing maybe?  It's really got me thinking   ::)
