A Weary Savior!


    On the way to Galilee Jesus had to go through the country of
    Samaria. In Samaria Jesus came to the town called Sychar.
    This town is near the field that Jacob gave to his son
    Joseph. Jacob's well was there. Jesus was tired from his long
    trip. So Jesus sat down beside the well. It was about noon.

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus took the "short cut" between Judea in the south and Galilee in
the north. He went through Samaria. He was tired from his journey. He
rested by the historic site of Jacob's well. So much history and
promise come together in this moment. We expect something grand to
happen. Jesus has come to the well dug by Father Israel (Jacob's name
was changed to Israel). What great word do we hear? What triumphant
deed does Jesus do? None. At least not at first. Jesus' primary action
was to simply sit down. He was a weary Savior. He was tired. Sounds
almost bizarre as our hearts exalt and hold Jesus in the highest of
places. At the same time, something wondrous is once again revealed to
us. Jesus became flesh. Human flesh. Mortal flesh. Wearying flesh. He
knows us not only as God, but as one of us whose feet got dirty, whose
legs grew tired, and whose stomach growled when it was empty. Jesus is
a Savior who knows us; he knows us not just because he is God, but also
because he has lived in our world, sharing our burdens and feeling our
weariness.


TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, how can I thank you for making yourself so accessible to me
through Jesus. Jesus, thank you for becoming mortal for me. Your
sacrifice has given even greater confidence that I can come to the
throne room of heaven and receive mercy and grace to help me in my time
of need. Thank you Lord Jesus. I praise dear Father, most holy and
gracious God. Amen.

KEY THOUGHT:
Even when we aren't sure what to ask, we need to come to Jesus and ask!
We're thirsty. We're tired. Our resources are limited. Our strength is
on the wane. We realize that we cannot do it alone. So let's ask,
trusting that even if we are not sure what we should request, let's
just ask for the water that quenches our thirst. The Lord will know
what we need!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy God, I come to you in Jesus' name and ask that you fill that hole
in my soul that I cannot quite identify. Slake my thirst and fill me
with your living water. Amen.

Spiritual R&R

Mat 11:28  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Mat 11:29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Mat 11:30  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.


Military folks work some long hours. There is no such thing as overtime and during deployments you can work 16-hour days (and more) easy. Some of us have gone months without a single day off and have been dog-tired. But life can run you into the ground too. Relationships, disappointments, illness, defeat, and trials can beat us down and we get flat out whupped. Jesus says ‘Come to me...and I will give you rest.’ Take it to Him, spend some time in prayer and the Scripture and get a little R&R.

Did you ever stop to ask what a yoke is really for? Is it to be a burden to the animal which wears it? It is just the opposite: it is to make its burden light. Attached to the oxen in any other way than by a yoke, the plow would be intolerable; worked by means of a yoke, it is light. A yoke is not an instrument of torture; it is an instrument of mercy. It is not a malicious contrivance for making work hard; it is a gentle device to make hard labor light. [Christ] knew the difference between a smooth yoke and a rough one, a bad fit and a good one... The rough yoke galled, and the burden was heavy; the smooth yoke caused no pain, and the load was lightly drawn. The badly fitted harness was a misery; the well fitted collar was "easy". And what was the "burden"? It was not some special burden laid upon the Christian, some unique infliction that they alone must bear. It was what all men bear: it was simply life, human life itself, the general burden of life which all must carry with them from the cradle to the grave. Christ saw that men took life painfully. To some it was a weariness, to others failure, to many a tragedy, to all a struggle and a pain. How to carry this burden of life had been the whole world's problem. And here is Christ's solution: "Carry it as I do. Take life as I take it. Look at it from my point of view. Interpret it upon my principles. Take my yoke and learn of me, and you will find it easy. For my yoke is easy, sits right upon the shoulders, and therefore my burden is light."

Amen Pastor Roger. Everytime I read Matthew 11:28-30 I weep. I weep knowing the Lord carries me on days I cannot carry myself.  I know Jesus will carry my burdens without complaint or smite. He is my shoulder to cry on.  I know if there is no-one else to listen to my woes Jesus will listen. He paid the ultimate price for my soul and and still he carries me!!!!
