Here is a wonderful recipe I tried this evening...

Core and peel 4-6 apples; slice crosswise and soak in white wine for 2 hours.

Fritter batter:
2 egg yolks
2/3 cup milk
1 TB lemon juice
1 TB butter, melted
1 cup flour
1/4 tsp salt
2 TB sugar
2 egg whites, beaten

Combine batter ingredients in order given, stirring with a wooden spoon. Fold in egg whites last.

Drain apples. Drop one at a time in fritter batter, and fry until golden brown in hot oil.

I have always wanted to make apple fritters, never really tried it. We didn't have any white cooking wine, so I soaked the apples in apple cider vinegar instead.

They are absolutely terrible. It is worth a trip to the store just to get cooking wine.
